About

Husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope possess an undeniable chemistry that they bring to the stage with them every time they perform. Their stylish brand of alt-country incorporates elements of rock, folk, and even punk, and their eclectic live shows bring it all to life as they belt out songs like "Birmingham" and "The Devil Is All Around" in perfect harmony. Equal parts anthemic and heart-rending,  Shovel & Rope's passionate performances never fail to get ticket buyers grooving on the duo's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Shovels & Rope is Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, two South Carolina-based musicians who began collaborating in 2008 on what was intended to be a one-off album titled Shovels & Rope. The duo quickly realized they had both musical and personal chemistry, and in 2009 they were married.  They made their sophomore outing as Shovels & Rope in 2012 with O' Be Joyful, an impressive slice of country folk that topped Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart and earned them the title of Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards.  Shovels & Rope continued to delight in 2014 with their third album Swimmin' Time, following up the release with a series of rousing performances on the road.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Shovels and Rope was amazing. Their love and connection informs their amazing chemistry on stage. Highly recommend seeing them live!"

"Cary Ann and Michael are fantastic! With only two people, they have an undeniably full sound. Their chemistry on stage makes for a tight, highly energetic live show that pushes the rock-country envelope."

"One of the best shows I have seen in years! If you haven't seen them yet you are missing out!"

  • Duo with gusto!

by YoDaddio on 1/20/15North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

This fun couple swapped instruments several times during the concert....super cool that they are musically ambidextrous. The music was great live and very entertaining to watch. Even if your not a huge fan (like me), this will still get your boots stomping! Minus one star because the opening act was really quite bad.

  • Large Crowd but venue to big for Shovels and Rope

by DDConcertGoer on 1/20/15North Charleston Performing Arts Center - North CharlestonRating: 2 out of 5

I loved Shovels and Rope when I saw them last year at the Groundhog Day concert at the Charleston Music hall. What a difference a year makes! The music was too loudly aggressive for their wonderful harmonies and I think that was because they were playing in a large venue. In particular, the drumming was hammering and disruptive rather than supporting the beat and undergirding the performance. The crowd stood the entire time we were there (for about 30 minutes of the concert) and we lost the excellent visibility we had from our seats. There was no need to stand the entire time - the music for the most part wasn't danceable (they aren't Tina Turner!) and the crowd could have sat for the quieter ballads.

  • Amazing show

Wow, what can I say. I knew they were good but I had no idea how good. The really rocked out and reminded me of X. Strange, but lots of intensity with few instruments. A talented duo.

Tremendous show, lots of energy, fun performance, excellent music and Cary Ann and Michael are genuine and sincere in their music and life.

I haven't missed a hometown shovels and rope show in years, and I've never been disappointed- Saturday night was no exception. They played some of my favorite songs from their debut album, with a perfect mix from their two most recent efforts. Cary Ann's voice was impeccable; Michael's guitar playing and presence was unapologetically rock and roll. They had the entire crowd singing, dancing and/or clapping for two hours. The only thing that could have made the show any better was if they played every song they ever wrote! I was sad to see it end, but always grateful and overjoyed to see them live. They deserve all the respect and praise they are given and then some!

Shovels and Rope kept me groovin' out of my seat the entire show! They are great story tellers and amazing musicians!

Shovels and Rope was amazing. My husband and I had a fabulous time and can't wait to see them again.

  • AWESOME!

by MrsHanson on 11/12/14The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The title says it all, if you are a fan of Shovels & Rope they are a do not miss band. The chemistry on stage is palpable. I love them and enjoyed every second of the show. AMAZING!

  • Longtime fan of Shovels and Rope; Fillmore... eh

    by 87more on 11/11/14The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

This band deserves all the accolades and love they are receiving. The Fillmore is turning into a place I'm not interested in. The sound was good for this particular band, but usually it's too bass heavy (chattering-teeth heavy, yeah). Shovels & Rope has a synthesizer, which was turned up so loud I could often not hear the other instruments or vocals. The front of the stage had a guard rail up? I'm not sure if this is new or what, but it was silly. The security guys were real strict about where you could stand. Did something happen to an artist there or something? Go see Shovels & Rope. Just not at the Fillmore.

  • Shovels and Rope kicked but the sound didn't

    by Rocky45 on 10/13/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

Great band, have seen them two other times and the shows were great. One was at this same Bowery Boston venue, but this past show's sound was horrible. Too loud, and I love loud shows, and distorted! Will not be going to see this band again because I did not enjoy the overall experience.

  • Shovels & Rope - AMAZING!

by erincate on 10/13/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

An evening with Shovels and Rope is always mindblowing. There's just no live show like it. They are so connected with the audience. Before seeing them live, I really liked them. After seeing them live for the first time, I nearly loved them to the point of obsession!

  • by Anonymous on 10/11/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first time seeing Shovels and Rope and my first time at the Bijou theatre. Great performance and beautiful theatre!

  • Amazing talent!

by Anonymous on 10/11/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Shovel and Ropes was awesome. Their talent to not only play well but to also play multiple instruments really well was stunning.

  • Fantastic

by Anonymous on 10/11/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic venue. The Bijou is one of the most intimate, artistically beautiful theaters I have ever experienced. There is not a bad seat in the house. Fantastic opening act. John Fulbright was a true story teller and first rate songster. Fantastic headliner. Shovels and Rope were everything I had hoped for. They came not only to entertain us but each other, which was so refreshing. One can feel the enjoyment these two have for each other, the audience, and what they do, which is create some of the most original, fun, smart music on the planet. Do go!

  • by Anonymous on 10/11/14U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 4 out of 5

They were fantastic but the sound quality was not good. It was not balanced well making it very difficult to understand their lyrics, they had a blown cone or some other defect in equipment that caused a constant hum/buzz, and it was too loud which exacerbated the problems. The Bijou Theater has superb sound quality but their production was not ready to take advantage of that. I will look forward to seeing them again when they get these issues worked out.

  • Shovels and Rope Top Notch

by mcampea on 10/9/14Barrymore Theatre - MadisonRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent performance. Love this band. Great interaction on stage. Rocked the set. Not a dull moment to be had the entire show.

  • Shovels & Rope live can't be beat

    by Bobby1234567890 on 10/2/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are the perfect antidote to the wave of old-timey revival music that has been out there for a while now. Though their music is based in part on that culture as well as church hymns, country songs, the delta blues, rockabilly and all sorts of other influences, these two have truly created their own sound that is completely modern. As performers they bring so much energy and heart to their shows that to see them in a small venue like the Royale in Boston was just perfect. Got in early and went right up to the front of the stage and was completely transported by every song. Most I knew well from their albums, but they were playing fast and loose, switching back and forth between the drums, guitar and keyboard as they are wont to do in their sets, so each song was fresh and unique. they were totally engaged with one another and the audience as well - often felt they were looking right at me which is always cool! Cary Ann tearing it up on the drums, hair flying, tongue wagging and a devilish grin on her face. Micheal grinding our some down and dirty licks on his guitars. Highlights for me were "The Devil Is All Around" and the absolutely beautiful "Thresher" off their new album. Their voices and harmonies are rough but magical. Bottom line is: see them when ever you can. A smaller venue will reward you with the intimacy and power of their performance.

  • by mitzyann on 10/1/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing show! You can truly tell they love each other and what they do and have a great time playing together. The venue had excellent acoustic and my friends and I were able to grab a couch towards the back. Also, you can't complain with $5 PBR tall boys

  • Amazing as always!

by ConcertTroll on 10/1/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Shovels & Rope always puts on a great show. I always forget that its just the two of them on stage...

  • good band bad sound

great musicians but the Royal needs a new sound guy! To loud for the amount of people in the theater!
