About

Husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope possess an undeniable chemistry that they bring to the stage with them every time they perform. Their stylish brand of alt-country incorporates elements of rock, folk, and even punk, and their eclectic live shows bring it all to life as they belt out songs like "Birmingham" and "The Devil Is All Around" in perfect harmony. Equal parts anthemic and heart-rending,  Shovel & Rope's passionate performances never fail to get ticket buyers grooving on the duo's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Shovels & Rope is Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, two South Carolina-based musicians who began collaborating in 2008 on what was intended to be a one-off album titled Shovels & Rope. The duo quickly realized they had both musical and personal chemistry, and in 2009 they were married.  They made their sophomore outing as Shovels & Rope in 2012 with O' Be Joyful, an impressive slice of country folk that topped Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart and earned them the title of Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards.  Shovels & Rope continued to delight in 2014 with their third album Swimmin' Time, following up the release with a series of rousing performances on the road.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

  • Shovels and Rope amazing as always

by PinkButchShovels on 9/16/13Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first headlining Shovel and Rope show after I saw them for the first time opening for Butch Walker two years ago and I loved the guys! Good energy, good show and music! I was pleasantly surprised of the live rendition of their songs - brought a new kick to their music! Good fun! I was pleasantly surprised at Shakey Graves - have to admit I never look into the opening bands to have a surprise moment - and I thought it was going to be a band, so when this one-man show showed up and blew me away I was instantly taken away. The guy is amazing and his live versions are so much better than recordings it turns out! But definitely go buy the guy's music, it's really good!

  • Great Live Show

Cary Ann Hearst is like a young Dolly Parton. Full of energy, great songs, good show with a lot of intimacy

Great band and venue! Shovels & Rope rocked out and it's a great place to see a show!

The bands were great and the Parish room is very unique and atmospheric. However, the bar is severely insufficient to support the crowd that was in attendance. The size and number of bartenders, combined with what seems like a slow credit card process, made it so that you waited 15 minutes to put in a drink order. At one point I gave up and waited until the band break to go back for a drink (and close my tab, obviously) and even then I missed a couple of songs from the headliners.

  • One of best performances of 2013

by meaganwins on 2/4/13The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 5 out of 5

Shovels & Rope bring an energy you only see once in a while. They are lively, humorous, talented and creative with their set. They bring a bit of honky tonk, rock, and folk to the stage and you feel like close friends with them. The venue was intimate enough to feel close to the band no matter where you stood. The crowd was dancing the whole time. People appreciated the music for music and danced their hearts out. Amazing show. I hope they always come back to Boston.

Saw them open for Jack White and knew we had to see them again. This show was amazing. They are so talented and even if you think their music isn't (your style) seeing them live will instantly turn you into a fan.

  • Shovels and Rope rocked the Sinclair!

    by marge0724 on 2/3/13The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 5 out of 5

Love this duo from the South. If you like funky bluegrass, folk, with some rock n roll mixed in with all that, and amazing acoustic guitar, drum, and harmonica playing...you need to see this duo! Their chemistry, passion for music and performing is so evident and they are so full of energy! Special, one of a kind couple!!! The Sinclair in Harvard Square just opened December and its a great venue. Food and drink next door, then walk right over to the other side to see live music! Loved it!

  • Shovels and Rope

by Carkus on 2/3/13The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 4 out of 5

The band is fantastic, they put on a great show! The sound at the Sinclair, unfortunately, was not good. And the people working the sound board did ABSOLUTELY nothing to fix it. The electric guitar was constantly feeding back, and I as I was standing next to the sound board, I had the opportunity to observe the soundman in "inaction." He did nothing to attempt to fix the problem, and the feedback really detracted from the show.

Awesome venue. Awesome band. My only complaint it that on one of the coldest days of the year, the coat check should have been open. Otherwise, had a great time!

  • Unbelievable energy!
