About

Husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope possess an undeniable chemistry that they bring to the stage with them every time they perform. Their stylish brand of alt-country incorporates elements of rock, folk, and even punk, and their eclectic live shows bring it all to life as they belt out songs like "Birmingham" and "The Devil Is All Around" in perfect harmony. Equal parts anthemic and heart-rending,  Shovel & Rope's passionate performances never fail to get ticket buyers grooving on the duo's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Shovels & Rope is Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, two South Carolina-based musicians who began collaborating in 2008 on what was intended to be a one-off album titled Shovels & Rope. The duo quickly realized they had both musical and personal chemistry, and in 2009 they were married.  They made their sophomore outing as Shovels & Rope in 2012 with O' Be Joyful, an impressive slice of country folk that topped Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart and earned them the title of Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards.  Shovels & Rope continued to delight in 2014 with their third album Swimmin' Time, following up the release with a series of rousing performances on the road.

  • This duo kicks ass

by KimMBH on 9/30/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This duo puts on a mighty fine performance, it was enjoyable to all of us (including the people who were not as of yet familiar with the group). Run don't walk, and prepare to leave happy.

An old, eclectic, unique venue to see a GREAT band. Highly satisfied customer!

  • opening act was the real show!

by Anonymous on 9/29/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

John Fullbright was amazing as opening act! Sound was perfect. Then Shovels and Rope came out and the drums were so loud it hurt my chest. I went up to the balcony hoping it would be better and my husband and I were the only ones I saw sent downstairs because we didn't have a VIP pass. Seemed like they chose us over the mostly younger crowd. We left early. Disappointing because we loved Shovels and Rope at same venue last year.

Excellent show. Two very talented musicians with a lot of energy.

  • Sound was horrible for Shovels and Rope

by BrucesLittleGirl on 9/29/14Royale Boston - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

We were so excited to see Shovels and Rope again after enjoying them so much at Newport Folk Festival. The opening act was good and the sound mix for him was perfect. But when Shovels and Rope came on, the sound was so overamplified and distorted that we couldn't hear their vocals. Just a buzz of noise. It was better out in the lobby where we went when our ears couldn't take it any more but not good enough to get us to stay.. And several people were also walking out with the same complaint. I have attended probably 1000+ live music events and have only ever walked out three times. This was one of them. We left after about 6 songs because we just couldn't enjoy the show. I don't know why the sound mix had to be so loud and distorted when it was fine for the opening act. Very very disappointed.....

  • Are you kidding me?!

I simply cannot believe how much sound these two generate. Still not a wasted note. As a songwriter I am green with envy at the depth and breadth of the Shovels and Rope material. And the passion with which they deliver their music is inspiring. I was sucked into their swirling vortex...

  • Great Energy

by Pips on 9/29/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 4 out of 5

Great live show - great sound, amazing energy, made the venue feel super small. All around just a great, well worth it show.

  • Great band, Bad venue

by bkinthebk on 9/26/14Music Hall of Williamsburg - BrooklynRating: 3 out of 5

Shovels and Rope were awesome. Great music and energy. Music Hall of Williamsburg, however, has the worst acoustics. The bass is out of control. It almost drowns out the rest of the instruments and voices. It's not that loud bass is bad, it's that boomy bass is bad. They need some acoustic engineers to come check out the room.

  • Shovels & Rope shined above the terrible sound.

    by thp27 on 3/6/14Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Shovels & Rope plus the openers Hurray for the Riff Raff are both incredible performers! Their live performances are something to be witnessed. Unfortunately the sound was absolutely terrible during the main act. So much feedback and static, you could hear the speakers just buzzing constantly. I am an avid concert goer and was wishing I had earplugs. I love Variety Playhouse, but this was terrible!

Awesome! They really put on a great show! Lots of energy on stage.

I've seen S&R three times now, Shaky Knees, opening for Dawes and this show at the Variety Playhouse. They are fantastic - great writing, music and genius chemistry. Can't wait until next time!!

The sound was terrible. The drums were way too loud along with all the instruments. The vocals were not load enough. I love shovels and rope but the sound quality ruined it for me:(

best show i've been to in years! Their energy is totally palpable and hypnotic.

  • Shovels and Rope is fantastic!

by Anonymous on 9/17/13Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Cary Ann and Michael are fantastic! With only two people, they have an undeniably full sound. Their chemistry on stage makes for a tight, highly energetic live show that pushes the rock-country envelope. Our only complaint is that they did not play "Boxcar." It's such a great song, and the album it's on is excellent! I hope they'll play more from it next time around, but again the show was FANTASTIC! This is the second time we have seen them, and we cannot wait for them to return to Boston/NH.

  • Great Energy

First timer at Shovels & Rope. Will definitely see them again. Great chemistry and passion for whole 90 mins. New songs were great too.

Shovels and Rope were great and the opener was fun, but I won't be rushing to see another concert in Webster Hall anytime soon.
