Husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope possess an undeniable chemistry that they bring to the stage with them every time they perform. Their stylish brand of alt-country incorporates elements of rock, folk, and even punk, and their eclectic live shows bring it all to life as they belt out songs like "Birmingham" and "The Devil Is All Around" in perfect harmony. Equal parts anthemic and heart-rending, Shovel & Rope's passionate performances never fail to get ticket buyers grooving on the duo's must-see tours.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Shovels & Rope is Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, two South Carolina-based musicians who began collaborating in 2008 on what was intended to be a one-off album titled Shovels & Rope. The duo quickly realized they had both musical and personal chemistry, and in 2009 they were married. They made their sophomore outing as Shovels & Rope in 2012 with O' Be Joyful, an impressive slice of country folk that topped Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart and earned them the title of Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards. Shovels & Rope continued to delight in 2014 with their third album Swimmin' Time, following up the release with a series of rousing performances on the road.

This show was intense, intimate, and downright dirty at times...like a night of good lovemaking. Seriously. That good
This show was great! Glad I get to see this duo in a smaller venue too. They are both so incredibly talented.
I absolutely adored Shovels and Rope. It was my first time hearing or seeing them and I plan to do more of both.
They sounded great. Wish they would have played longer. Didn't play one of my favorite songs.
Extremely talented individuals! They have Heart 'n' soul!
These two together create a beautiful experience. Talent times two. I love seeing them live and can't wait to see them again.
Shovels & Rope are a one of a kind whirlwind of rock, blues, country, Americana and kick ass. I was very disappointed that the Ryman had an obnoxoiously loud and talking-over-the-music crowd this evening, some falling-down drunk dudes next to me were even singing Garth Brooks loudly over the gaps between performances until I told them they were being disrespectful. Sadly, it was clear S&R really needs to get a professional road crew because the quality of the sound was amateur and staticky at times. Their drum kit was set up too loud and distracted from the rest of the music. The first half of their Saturday set their vocals were hard to hear, but it got better. The first three songs of their Sunday set, their vocals were also soft. I was somewhat disappointed that the Saturday and Sunday sets seemed nearly identical, in spite of Michael stating they would be playing different stuff. but that last part is not a review of Saturday in particular, so I digress. Great act. Incredible venue with not a bad seat in the house.
If this crew comes to your town you don't want to miss them! I've seen them several times and I can't wait until the next show. You won't be disappointed!
Shovels & Rope never lets you down. Their gritty down to earth personalities along with being talented multi instrumentalists always entertains.
The opening act of John moreland was terrific. He sang from his soul and you could feel his pain. He and his partner could pick a mean guitar. That's why I listen to country music. Good music with a story. Then shovels and rope came on. After the fourth song of a head throbbing base drum that she kicked with her foot my husband and I agreed to leave. Life's to short to listen to bad music.
Having seen Shovels and Rope play well on numerous occasions prior to this, I have to say this was not a quality experience. The sound quality at the Ryman was horrible and the vocals were muffled and the instrumental parts too loud for a duo. This was a very obvious problem and it was not fixed through the set.
First time at the Ryman and first time seeing shovels and rope. Both were phenomenal. Had a blast and I didn't even know their music.
When you go to the Ryman Auditorium for any concert you will hear an acoustically special performance. Views from all seats are great! This concert was a bit of a mixed bag for us. We really enjoyed Aaron Lee Tasjan. Shovels and Rope had a lot of sound out just two people.
Amazing show ~ had some technical difficulties and kept playing through them as if nothing was happening. True talent! Would see them again 1,000,000 times!
Excellent show at the Bijou. They sounded amazing. Highly recommend catching Shovels & Rope.
What a neat theater and the performance was KILLER!!
So glad to get in on the first show of the Little Seeds tour. This duo bring raw emotion and transparency to the stage mixed with the sounds of old Appalachia and the salty air of Charleston. Their chemistry is undeniable, and you find yourself lost in their songs entirely. True American storytellers.
Far too short overall, with too much talking between songs and too disjointed between songs, and not enough songs. Stellar lineup of musicians but just felt slow rather than full of energy that it could have had.
Shovels and Rope played a short but incredible set at Mershel Plaza, an outdoor venue in downtown Winston-Salem, on Wednesday night May 25. If you have not seen them live, do NOT miss the opportunity to check them out. Their music defies categorization but is always soulful and sincere.
