About

Husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope possess an undeniable chemistry that they bring to the stage with them every time they perform. Their stylish brand of alt-country incorporates elements of rock, folk, and even punk, and their eclectic live shows bring it all to life as they belt out songs like "Birmingham" and "The Devil Is All Around" in perfect harmony. Equal parts anthemic and heart-rending,  Shovel & Rope's passionate performances never fail to get ticket buyers grooving on the duo's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Shovels & Rope is Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, two South Carolina-based musicians who began collaborating in 2008 on what was intended to be a one-off album titled Shovels & Rope. The duo quickly realized they had both musical and personal chemistry, and in 2009 they were married.  They made their sophomore outing as Shovels & Rope in 2012 with O' Be Joyful, an impressive slice of country folk that topped Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart and earned them the title of Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards.  Shovels & Rope continued to delight in 2014 with their third album Swimmin' Time, following up the release with a series of rousing performances on the road.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Shovels and Rope was amazing. Their love and connection informs their amazing chemistry on stage. Highly recommend seeing them live!"

"Cary Ann and Michael are fantastic! With only two people, they have an undeniably full sound. Their chemistry on stage makes for a tight, highly energetic live show that pushes the rock-country envelope."

"One of the best shows I have seen in years! If you haven't seen them yet you are missing out!"

  • Bad sound

by Robert on 6/2/19Tivoli Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 3 out of 5

Too loud to hear. Could not decipher Shovels and Rope's lyrics because the sound system was too loud and muddy. I could tell they were doing a good job, but the fact that I couldn't understand the songs made it unmemorable.

  • Unprofessional sound

by Rob in the Ridge on 6/2/19Tivoli Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 1 out of 5

I love the Tivoli. The acoustics are excellent and the (many) shows I witnessed there met all of my expectations. The opening act (I'm With Her) used amplification sparingly but their second song had vocals overcome by their guitar. he soundperson testified that setting by the next song. Not so with Shovels and Rope. EVERY amplified instrument went into feedback mode once turned on which made it impossible to enjoy their show. Many of the audience left but my group stuck it out. Afterwards, I was assured that "they never sound like this" by those who had caught them multiple times before. Still - I'm With Her was outstanding!

  • Shovels and Rope

    by S. E. on 5/7/19Hoyt Sherman Place - Des MoinesRating: 2 out of 5

We originally saw them at Red Rocks in Co back in 2014 and loved them. Was excited about the DesMoines show but they only played and hour and their new stuff is too hard sounding for us. Very disappointed!!!

  • MORE FRANK

by Debbie on 5/7/19Hoyt Sherman Place - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

Great show but wish we had gotten more FRANK!! There is never too much Frank! Trapper Schoepp was awesome too!

  • Great show but...

by Treetirtytree on 5/7/19Hoyt Sherman Place - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

My only complaint about the show itself was the sound mixing for Shovels & Rope could've been much better. The instruments were way too loud and you couldn't hear the words at all for a majority of songs. Trapper and Frank both had great sound mixing and could be heard clearly.

  • Amateur White Stripes wannabes?

by LeftCoastBrit on 9/25/18The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

For the life of me, I can't remember why I bought this ticket; and to make it worse, I actually had a free function at the Craneway where Dave Alvin was putting on a show for Union folk. I've seen him before and he's a great country rocker; but I left early for this! Maybe I thought they were bluegrass or country rock but the first two or three songs were turgid and her repetitive one stick "drumming" was really annoying. I'm a flexible lad and had paid so I gave them some time; they did switch into more melodic material but it was still only him with his guitar (except one song, where she strummed while he did a half-hearted - but better than her - effort at real percussion). I'm not crazy about White Stripes, and the sister's monotonous drumming is a bit irritating too, but at least Jack has some novelty skills. This pair have NOTHNG! Is she hoping copying the Stripes will get them a career? Wrong! It was terrible. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've left any concert - let alone the Fillmore, where I've been dozens of times (check the posters on my walls!!) - after 30 minutes, but this one I did. At least that meant parking was on y $2. Too bad I couldn't get back in time to see Dave in Richmond,

  • Solid Show

by OakIsland on 9/24/18The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

They are awesome musicians with great voices. Will see them again and again! One criticism.....I do wish their live show had more songs where one singer was featured on lead vocals with the other singing backup harmony. This show seemed that nearly every song had them both sing at the same volume with both voices up front (like the Everly Brothers). I love their voices but having them both sing every song with equal volume and equal intensity starts to take a good thing and make it seem formulaic.

  • S&R

by KDCK on 9/24/18The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time at The Fillmore. All of the employees were super nice and helpful, zero attitude like I've experienced at some other music venues. The sound was really good, I could hear the voices over the instruments. I love the interior of The Fillmore, it definitely sets the right atmosphere for enjoying live music. And regarding Shovels & Rope, I have no idea why they're not more well-known, I think they're song-writing geniuses, and their voices together are golden. They were really energized and I think they liked being at The Fillmore, too. It was an overall excellent experience.

  • Good show

by tech72 on 4/3/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Really unique musical duo. Show started off a bit slow but picked up and finished strong. Very talented but find the occasional political commentary NOT NEEDED. Music should be for all no matter your views. Did not play Johnny 99......

  • Great venue! Even better show!

    by jldduncan99 on 4/3/18The Walker Theatre - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

As always, Shovels and Rope put on a phenomenal show! I can’t wait for the next one. My first show at this venue and not a bad seat in the house! I will definitely see more concerts here.

The band Shovels & Rope is my favorite! They never disappoint! They always put on an amazing show! My only complaint is that they didn't play long enough! (THEY NEVER COULD!)

  • Shovels and Rope

They were great as usual. Two fine people making some mighty fine music!

  • Wasted night

by Boredtodeath1 on 4/2/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

You would think they would be promoting their latest albums. Same old same old. First concert I’ve left early in years. Talked about as much as they played.

  • by Anonymous on 4/2/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

ShoRo for life!!!!!!! This is always my favorite show! They're incredible.

  • Shovels and Rope were so so...

by BigBoi2 on 4/2/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

These guys are better at GA shows. They talked a lot of politics unfortunately... music was good, but unenergetic, which is what they are usually know for.

  • Lackluster

by Calebxen on 4/2/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

I love these guys and I was very excited to see them. But when they played they were tired and noncommital. There was no chemistry om stage and they didn't play to the audience or entertain at all. It felt like a very awkward and impersonal show.

  • Shovels and rope sounded amazing

by Anonymous on 10/16/17Port City Music Hall - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

This couple is my absolute favorite!!' They always sound incredible and watching them perform is astounding. That's why I was so incredibly disappointed with port city music hall. You have to be t least 6'2 to see anything. So upsetting.

  • Shovels & Rope was great as always!

by EVLMPYR on 10/14/17Port City Music Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

This was my 6th time seeing Shovels & Rope and they always put on a great show. They played some songs that they normally do not play which was nice. They have such great chemistry on stage and always give it their all. I brought my 10 year old twins to the show and they had a great time as well. I would highly recommend seeing Shovels & Rope if they come to your town.

  • Shovels & Rope marinating in discontent

by Loulou73 on 10/14/17Port City Music Hall - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

Gosh all I wanted was a night out to see some uplifting music, and I have always had that experience seeing these two. This was the sixth time I've seen Shovels & Rope. I thought it was really unfortunate they've decided to get political on stage. I go out to see live music to rise above the vagaries and disappointments of daily life, not marinate in them. I understand some people enjoy this type of thing, and if that's you, you should have a blast. But know that's what you're in for if you were hoping for a night of something a little more transcendent. Port City Music Hall is a decent venue. The only real benefit to the "preferred seating" is that there are actual seats. There are only two or three tables where you have an unobstructed view of the stage, so get there early if you sprung for the pricier tickets, and want to be able to actually see the band.

  • Shovels and Rope at the Stone Pony

So awesome!!!! Would see them again in a heartbeat
