Shen Yun Performing Arts is a triumph of collaboration, bringing together over a hundred of the world's foremost classically trained Chinese dancers, choreographers, musicians, and vocalists. It also boasts the world's only full orchestra that embraces both Western and Chinese instruments as its permanent members.
Based in New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts is distinguished by its conscious effort to remain independent of China's communist regime, which has abused and impoverished the arts for decades. It is proud to thus include members who practice Falun Gong. The company aspires to create original performances that not only entertain, but also more deeply educate, enrich, and inspire. The company's rich repertory is drawn from the pages of history, universal themes, and the world around us. All choreography and music performed are original.

A wonderful performance by very talented artist. I would without question go see them again.
Unfortunately, I did not do my due diligence in researching the show and only went off the commercials. The choreography is beautiful and the incorportation of the background screen in the production is amazing. Perhaps if I had done some research I would have been better prepared for the pieces set in modern-day China and vocal performances regarding Dafa which is the overall message of Shen Yun. The audience response was awkward with those particular performances as well. While the show changes yearly, given the message, I doubt I will attend another production. Regarding the venue, while the Baltimore Hippodrome is a beautiful location you need to factor comfort into your seating choices. We were seated in Row E of the Center Middle Balcony and both myself and my daughters were extremely uncomfortable. The seats are narrow and the legroom is practically non-existent. I am a 5'5 tall woman and my daughters are 5'2 and 5'1. We were cramped and twisting in the seats to try and relieve the discomfort on our knees. Also, the distance between rows is so short you have to be careful you do not hit the person in front or behind you when moving.
Overall Shen Yun was absolutely amazing! The dancers and the orchestra were my favorite! The dancers were high energy and incredibly flexible! The musical score was all original and extremely enjoyable!! The two male soloists weren't to my liking, however it was nice to experience another culture. Would I go again? Most definitely 😁!
This was so creative , artistic, beautiful, and perfectly coordinated. I loved the performance and will support the school that overseas the actors . Thank you and my life has been enhanced from watching this incredible production- thank you
They are really amazing performers, however, i almost fell asleep. They need a little more drum, and music that is more alive. Overall, it is a good show.
The advertising certainly worked. Spent more $$ than I should have to see a colorful, tech aided, disciplined group of dancers showcase flowing pretty dances for 2 hours. The interactive use of the digital backdrop was clever. The propaganda about the Falun Gong cult, not so much. Would not have paid more than $25 for my balcony seats if I'd done more research. And the choreography was repetitive. These dancers are supposedly volunteers. That would explain how they can advertise so much. And the showbill was quite vague about how these volunteers "train"at their New York "campus"... all the while emphasizing their persecution by the Chinese government.
My friend wanted to attend this show and asked me to come with her. When we looked for seats in center orchestra there were no pairs left, only single seats. We each bought a ticket for a single seat in a different row. Issue 1: We got to our seats a few minutes after the performance had begun because it took us 30 min to find parking, due to the garage attached to the venue being closed, which we were unaware of until we arrived. Issue 2: Someone else was in my seat. Issue 3: the venue refused to take this person out of my seat at the time because they said it would be too disruptive..I would have to wait until intermission. Issue 3: I was seated in the very back of the theatre (the seat I paid for was in row 4), in a seat that was purposely unsold by the venue because of the obstructed view; this allowed me to see about 4 feet of stage on each side. There was no view of the center at all. After a few skits, I fell asleep. I slept through most of the performance. When asked at intermission if I wanted to take the seat I paid for I declined. I have mobility problems and it would have hurt too much to repeat the walk down to this seat a second time. As far as the performance goes, the scope of the production was not what I was hoping for. The stage in this venue appeared much smaller than in advertisements. The entire performance was comprised of short skits with unconnected story lines; most contained more acrobatics and pantomime than dance. Although there was a live orchestra, due to the nature of Chinese music in general, it sounded mechanical and without a pleasant resonance. To top it all off- my friend, who was sitting on row 6, told me the 2 seats next to her were left empty. We could have sat together after all.
Advertisement of Shen Yun portrayed more dancing and unique images. This was not it. It was some dancing, a play and a glimpse into Dafa religion. It was unexpected. We left half way through along with many from the audience.
I have never seen something so beautiful. The different dances was wonderful. I have never seen an interactive screen before, but the way they did it was just amazing. The stories that were told matched everything. I definitely want to see this again and I would recommend it to everyone one. The theater was very bad for people that are very tall.
This was my first time seeing Shen Yun, and I was very impressed. The dancing was outstanding and the costumes were very beautiful. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a different cultural experience. Unfortunately, the seats at the Hippodrome Theatre are too close to each other. I'm six feet tall and it was very uncomfortable sitting for over two hours in those seats. The venue should give serious consideration to renovating the inside of the facility and reconfiguring the seats.
Beautiful costumes. Perfect dances. Professionally done. It’s amazing how so much culture is being portrayed through this performance. Enlightening and educational.
great show looking forward to next year. The show was fantastic
In spite of some repetition in the dancing, it was a beautiful afternoon of Chinese story-telling and history told through dance and music as well as amazing videos incorporated with the dancing. The costumes, scenery, and colors were fantastic. We were also very impressed with their message of Divinity, the divine nature of man, and the importance of freedom.
Great experience, convenient hassle free, parking good, drinks little expensive, love the to go cup
I’ve seen a couple of different Shen Yun performances and always enjoy it so much! They’re absolutely beautiful! We’re going to make it an annual tradition.
The dancing and acrobats in this show are outstanding, no question. However, what is in question is the organization behind this show. After going to the show, it made sense that all the promotions are always very short and focused on the art portion. However, there is a strong underlying belief system throughout, as well, which is never promoted. It gave a very odd and unsettling feeling to the whole experience. In looking into the organization behind the Shen Yun show, it doesn't seem quite as kind and compassionate as they claim. Educate yourself on what you're spending your money on before attending this show.
Good seats bright colors dancers never missed a beat
For years the prospect of witnessing a Shen Yun performance eluded my schedule. A crevice of opportunity presented itself at the William Saroyan Theatre in Fresno, CA. Imagination and expectations met beyond belief. From the orchestra’s warm-up to final note I was entranced. Choreography precision and dancer elegance phenomenal. Costumery and sets colorful, symmetrical, and spot-on. Narrators welcoming and entertaining. Attending again, bet on it.
I was curious what it was all about. I’m glad I went to see it but it’s lacking something. I was hoping for something more exciting but it was boring the whole time. I’ll give thumbs up for costuming. It’s visually colorful. And thumbs up to the gal that played the Chinese violin.
