San Jose Earthquakes History

The San Jose Earthquakes trace back to the San Jose Clash, one of the 10 original Major League Soccer teams. In a gesture honoring the long history of the city’s former NASL soccer franchise, the name changed to the Earthquakes by the end of the '90s.

The Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice, in 2001 and 2003. The team claimed their first Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best record in 2005, and earned their second in 2012 at the height of their “Goonies Era,” which has lived on in Quakes fan culture. The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die."

In 2023, the Earthquakes hired former San Jose forward Luchi Gonzalez as head coach. Gonzalez has adopted a style of play referred to as “Luchi Ball,” which emphasizes possession and counter-pressing, and the Earthquakes subsequently qualified for their first playoff berth since 2020.

San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park

In the early days of MLS, the Earthquakes played in San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium. Today they play in PayPal Park, a privately financed, soccer-specific stadium that features a player tracking system similar to the one used by the Quakes' Bay Area neighbors, the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

Quakes fan culture developed heavily during the team’s mid-’10s “Goonies Era.” The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die" as a nod to The Goonies characters’ famous catchphrase.

    So much fun!

by GymRat on 5/9/23Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

Great soccer game at LEVI’S Stadium! Parking was easy-peasy and the game was memorable. The only two glitches were the distance of the parking lot and the long line for food. I didn’t know how far the lot was to the game, so I didn’t allow enough time in my planning. I arrived about 5 minutes late to the game. Also, the long lines for food prevented me from getting back to my seat in time during the halftime show. So, I missed the whole halftime show and part of the game. :/ Food options were about average for a stadium of this size, so don’t expect anything gourmet. Otherwise, the game was so much fun and the fam had a blast!! ^__^

by Soccermama on 4/18/23PayPal Park - San Jose

Took my grandsons to see their first professional soccer game the other night and we all had a great time! Seats were perfect! Grandsons got to hold up the big fan flag, they thought that was cool.we win the game 3-0 Then after the game #10 signed one of my grandsons jersey which made he’s night priceless. The player also took a photo with both them. Thank you to #10 (Espinoza)

    WORST Ever

by Mpadilla on 9/28/22Stanford Stadium - Stanford

This was the worst event ever that I have attended. Or let me say tried to attend. We came 2 1/2 hours early and were stuck in traffic for 1/2 a mile with no movement. When we finally got to parking area we had 30 minutes left in game. We were parked in a dirt lot with minimal lights and major holes. We prepaid for parking, that we never used because no one was charging for parking. By the time we got to our seats front row mind you that we traveled 19 hours to come see this game a anniversary trip, we only got to see 10 minutes of the game. No traffic control getting into stadium. I will never attend an event hosted at this stadium nor will I recommend anyone go to this event. People working parking told us we needed to be there 5 hours earlier. Totally unacceptable. Ticketmaster, Stanford Stadium, and both soccer organizations should really rethink think how they handle this situation. There were cars lined up way behind us and I am sure those people never got into the stadium. People work hard for their money and then want to go to these once in a lifetime events and to not even get to enjoy the game sucks. The stadium could have been packed more but do to the traffic issue seats were not full.

    Worst parking ever

by Betty on 9/28/22Stanford Stadium - Stanford

Parking was really bad. It took us 2 hours to park. We paid parking online but that was useless, traffic was so bad we ended up parking in a parking lot that was assigned for media but for 35 cash they allowed us parking. Entrance to the stadium was also a nightmare, no one could give us directions to gate 12. We had to walk around the stadium to find our door. After all we went through we finally made it to our seats at halftime.

    Get there early.

by Rocky Cuevas on 9/27/22Stanford Stadium - Stanford

Getting to the parking was horrible. Took over an hour. They need to make it easier and open up more gates, get more parking assistance.

Another fun game but the team fell a bit short. The energy was great and I'm already looking forward to the game next year!

Logistics weren’t good at all. Huge crowd. Couldn’t handle it, couldn’t open tickets. Almost went home. Missed first half of the game.

Couldn’t even get in because parking was a nightmare!

by Do not go unless they figure out parking!! on 9/27/22Stanford Stadium - Stanford

We have gone to this event numerous times in the past. It was cancelled earlier this year and moved to a date which also had a concert at a location very close to the stadium that the earthquakes were playing in. This year they decided to charge 35 dollars for parking. This did not occur in the past. The event coordinators did not plan for this correctly so there was a backup that was hours long. By the time we could have parked and walked into the stadium there would have only been 20 min or less left in the game so we opted just to leave very frustrated. For sure we will never go to this event again. Hours in a car for nothing.

Parking is terrible (plan to be there 2 hours in advance)

by M Iglesias on 9/27/22Stanford Stadium - Stanford

Paying in advance seemed to have no advantage, no clear direction where to park. Long lines and when getting to the front of the line parking was full with no direction where to go. Being first timers it was difficult to know where to go. Plan on going min of 2 hrs in advance to avoid all the parking/school traffic.

    Great atmosphere!

by Pels on 8/23/22PayPal Park - San Jose

Everything was great. Awesome atmosphere, super family friendly and great choices of food and drinks. I only wish they would open the tailgate parking lot a bit earlier.

    Alright for a friendly game.

by Rooney on 7/23/22PayPal Park - San Jose

Although I understand it was a friendly game against Celta de Vigo. Both teams played a really slow game. Effortless 1-1 draw with not much emotion and just passing horizontally. I love a more vertical game. I don’t expect much from the Earthquakes but everytime I go they still manage to disappoint me.

    My 1st Soccer Game

by Big B on 7/21/22PayPal Park - San Jose

I've been to many sporting events. There is nothing like a soccer game. The atmosphere of the fans is second to none. The multiple songs to sing to cheer on the home team. Unfortunately the Earthquakes lost. I will be back to see another game soon to experience that electricity again.

Quakes and PayPal are the best!

    by Mr. F on 7/15/22

The quakes experience at PayPal is the best! Parking is a breeze, the stadium is clean, staff is great, food options from stadium and food trucks is amazing! The sight lines are great throughout the stadium, even wearing opposing colors, I’ve never felt unwelcome, and the player accessibility post game in the parking lot is LIKE NO OTHER!!
