San Jose Earthquakes History

The San Jose Earthquakes trace back to the San Jose Clash, one of the 10 original Major League Soccer teams. In a gesture honoring the long history of the city’s former NASL soccer franchise, the name changed to the Earthquakes by the end of the '90s.

The Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice, in 2001 and 2003. The team claimed their first Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best record in 2005, and earned their second in 2012 at the height of their “Goonies Era,” which has lived on in Quakes fan culture. The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die."

In 2023, the Earthquakes hired former San Jose forward Luchi Gonzalez as head coach. Gonzalez has adopted a style of play referred to as “Luchi Ball,” which emphasizes possession and counter-pressing, and the Earthquakes subsequently qualified for their first playoff berth since 2020.

San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park

In the early days of MLS, the Earthquakes played in San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium. Today they play in PayPal Park, a privately financed, soccer-specific stadium that features a player tracking system similar to the one used by the Quakes' Bay Area neighbors, the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

Quakes fan culture developed heavily during the team’s mid-’10s “Goonies Era.” The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die" as a nod to The Goonies characters’ famous catchphrase.

    Great gift for the family

by biostar on 6/30/15Stanford Stadium - Stanford

Bought these tickets for my dad for father's day; Though parking was a pain (as with all games) it was fun once we got to the arena. Definitely a group event and if your not a big sports person, the environment itself is enough to keep you entertained.

    Fun game!

    by Vivi1977 on 6/30/15Stanford Stadium - Stanford

The stadium is really nice and the ticket price was reasonable. The only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is that parking IS A NIGHTMARE!! Not enough traffic control and it just seemed chaotic. We almost missed the entire first half because of the parking nightmare.

    We are San Jose!

    by Sj49er on 6/30/15Stanford Stadium - Stanford

Everything about the game was amazing, the seats were great, the fans were loud and the Quakes won. Only negative thing was the parking.

Great come back game for Quakes. Post game fireworks are awesome, better than most of other July 4th show.

    The game was fun

Even tho we were very high up, we had a good view of the game. We were just to the side of center field

Game was great - logistics CBB

by EQSoccerMom on 6/30/15Stanford Stadium - Stanford

Missed the whole first half due to traffic. Left South Palo Alto at 6:30 for game at 7:30. Tickets that were marketed as a "family four pack" were right in the middle of LA Galaxy mob scene complete with a brawl and lot's of swearing (in unison). That said, the game and the atmosphere were great (once our seats got moved). The halftime show was great and the fireworks afterwards really special. The sky at halftime was magical with pink and purple clouds everywhere.

    Great experience.

by Dandersob on 6/20/15Avaya Stadium - San Jose

This was my first opportunity to visit Avaya Stadium. It has a great atmosphere and the setting is an excellent place to watch a soccer match. As a visiting Sacramento Republic can I was welcomed into the stadium with no problems. I will definitely attend another game there and support the Earthquakes as long as they aren't playing Sacramento.

    Earthquakes @ Avaya

by MalekZ on 6/19/15Avaya Stadium - San Jose

This was my first game at Avaya Stadium. I went there with my two sons (grown men really). There is something very natural about watching a soccer match at a Soccer only stadium. Quality of MSL has not improved much since last time I went to a match here but the stadium was the star this day, great seating, great outdoor bar, great food and great beer selection. Fabulous times was had by all. My oldest never played soccer and was not very familiar with the rules, there would have been nice if announcers did a little bit more explaining for those fans. I remember the first year the Sharks were in the Cow Palace, the announcers did a lot of explaining of the rules, because the more fans get it the more they get hooked, there is a nice hockey crowd now at the tank, you should help develop the same for Avaya.

    Fun day at Earthquakes game

Great venue with a fun crowd. Seats in the closed end were great for seeing the action - and near the fun cheering section.

    The Stadium is the Star

by wellington on 6/10/15Avaya Stadium - San Jose

Avaya Stadium is a triumph...open to the world, perfect for watching soccer, and cleverly designed to make the most of its surroundings in every way...including the delicious food trucks that park at the open end and the massive bar with the view of the game. Unfortunately the soccer is mediocre at best and we watched one of the most forgettable games...a 0-0 tie with three (unmerited) red cards. \ The worst feature of this event, however, is the parking. It is unimaginably badly handled and understaffed, especially at the "silver" lot which I gave up on. A huge section is reserved for emergency parking, but the whole setup is an emergency...dusty, poorly managed, and undeserving of the good event nearby

Stadium was incredible! Parking was not!

by everythingis8 on 6/10/15Avaya Stadium - San Jose

I've been to a lot of sporting events, both professional (NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB, MiLB) and collegiate (NCAAB, NCAAF, baseball, soccer, etc), as well as Earthquakes games at Buck Shaw. This was hands down the worst parking experience I've ever had. We arrived at the stadium 40 minutes before kickoff, and were not IN the parking lot until 45 minutes later. By the time we walked through the dustbowl that was the lot and got to the stadium, we'd missed kickoff. That being said, once in the stadium, the experience was fantastic. Seats were in the shade, it wasn't too hot. Concessions were good, the stadium itself was beautiful. The stadium experience gets 5 stars, the parking gets 1. However, the parking situation was so bad it may deter me from going back.

Great first experience at this venue

by AnaCris on 6/1/15Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

I bought tickets for me and my son to watch this game. Since my husband would not attend with us, I bought VIP. I knew it would be a 'different' experience and safe to go just yourself and a kid. But I was very impressed not only with overall organization of event (parking, shuttle, entrance) but also the great staff in the VIP Lounge front desk, inside lounge and everybody else involved to ensure we are having a great moment.

    Great game terrible venue

by Andz5 on 5/27/15Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

If there is a game during the day at levis stadium be prepared to sweat, it kind of feels like the sun will melt your face unless you're in the luxury box. The nfl bag rules are in place even if there is no nfl game being played.

    Sunny, but nevertheless still enjoyable

by SJEarthquakes916 on 5/27/15Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

My group took the VTA Express Bus, cost nearly half of what people pay for parking. It's probably just as fast and we didn't have to deal with getting in and out. The stadium was still in excellent condition. Checking in was swift. The food was pricey: $5.75 for bottle of water and $8.50 for garlic fries. The restroom lines did not form until the halftime and end time. I noticed that the women's restroom did not have any line while the men's faced long lines. The seats were sunny at 4pm and throughout the whole match, so I would not recommend for those who don't want a tan. There were three exits so getting out was not a problem. I noticed the lines for the VTA light rails were very long, so be prepared for that. Atmosphere was great. No troublemaker until the postgame when a spectator jumped the barricade and onto the field. Of course, he got tackled and handcuffed. Funny thing was, people were calling the cops "pigs." What they never think is supposed the guy start firing at people, it'll be those so-called "pigs" that will save their behinds. The match was all right. Even though the Earthquakes were up a player, they only managed a tie (and they even trailed first, too). So I was kind of disappointed at the showing of the team.

No Half Time Show No Memorial Day Tribute

by Pamela16 on 5/27/15Levi's® Stadium - Santa Clara

Being that the game was held over Memorial weekend AND in the larger Levi Stadium venue, we were very disappointed there was no tribute AT ALL for the service members who gave their lives. In fact, there was no half time show of ANY kind. No mention by the announcer, NOTHING. We took our Marine (who was only home for a few days) to the game for his first visit to Levi Stadium. Given the previous half time shows for other non-eventful games, we anticipated something. Very disappointed & we will not be attending further Earthquake games at Levi. Not worth the $40 to park!
