About

Legendary Academy Award® and Tony Award® winner Kevin Kline makes his eagerly awaited return to Broadway in Noël Coward’s outrageously irresistible backstage comedy PRESENT LAUGHTER.

With a spectacular cast headed by three-time Tony® and Emmy® Award nominee Kate Burton (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy), Tony Award® nominee Kristine Nielsen (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike), and Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back) in her Broadway debut, with direction by Tony Award® nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God), PRESENT LAUGHTER follows a self-obsessed actor in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Juggling his considerable talent, ego and libido, the theater’s favorite leading man suddenly finds himself caught between fawning ingenues, crazed playwrights, secret trysts and unexpected twists.

    Noel Coward/Kevin Kline

by adkmo on 6/30/17St. James Theatre - New York

Coward and Kline, a great combination. Like to see old classics that I have missed. Mr. Kline is a master. I said above that I wouldn't recommend to a friend because I don't pretend to know who wants to spend $150 to see an English farce. Most people want the Lion King these days.

Kevin Kline is an American Treasure

by Yankeeplayer on 6/30/17St. James Theatre - New York

When I saw that Kevin Kline was up for a Tony award, my first thought was that he would be tough to beat. Of course, I knew that he won the award before I saw the show. But, when I saw the show, I had to laugh. There was just no way that anyone else could possibly have beaten him for the Best Actor Tony Award. This show is a perfect vehicle for Kevin Kline. His dry wit was perfect for the role he played. Kevin Kline has always been a master of facial expressions, but in this show he also demonstrated a mastering if hand gestures. Kevin Kline is an American acting treasure. This was my first experience with a Noel Coward play. It was wonderful. I truly hope that Broadway brings us more of his plays in the near future.

    predictable over-acting storyline

by DrDavidinFL on 6/29/17St. James Theatre - New York

There were plenty of people laughing at this show. My wife and I were not one of them. Although Kevin Kline is a classic actor with a penchant for dramatic acting the storyline was predictable and not very entertaining. We have been to many broadway shows...this is not one that I would recommend when there are many others that are far superior.

    Present Laughter was wonderful

by mrsese on 6/29/17St. James Theatre - New York

The dialogue, the humor, the excellent acting was everything we expected in this remarkable performance. It was sophisticated and fast-moving. Kevin Kline was sensational in his portrayal of the main character.

Present Laughter, the jokes hold up!

by MikeinNYC on 6/29/17St. James Theatre - New York

Good humor is good humor is good humor and good writing is good writing. This play, written in 1939 by the great Noel Coward, still holds up as laugh-out-loud farce with a few light touches of poignant musing on growing old; very light, I should say, for there are no moments for tears, but a few times when one might muse on the ravages of time. Kevin Kline is acrobatic and charismatic as always, Kate Burton is solid, of course, and Coby Smoulders is not just good, she's great and absolutely delicious. She holds her own against Kline, no small feat, especially considering this is her Broadway debut. I already liked her from the TV show and the small roles in action films but now I am basically in love.

Noel Coward's "Present Laughter" was a hoot and a half. Haven't laughed so much since I was a 14 month old kid.

    Highly Entertaining!

by MikeCavalier on 6/27/17St. James Theatre - New York

The St. James Theater was the perfect (cozy) setting for this Noel Coward (autobiographical) play. Kevin Kline gives an amazing performance with his facial expressions, hand gestures and physical comedy. He has the balance and stamina of a dancer. After 100 shows, the back and forth choreography between actors is timed perfectly and a credit to the seasoned actors Kate Burton and Kristine Nielson working with Mr. Kline. (and Colbie Smulders in her Broadway debut) I was lucky enough to sit up front and afterwards was treated to an interview of the director and actors by the WSJ critic Terry Teachout along with other WSJPLUS members. It was fascinating to hear from them how specific scenes, lines and expressions came to fruition as the actors developed their roles. Tired of musicals and elaborate productions? Go see this play and appreciate real acting without the hype and special effects drowning them out.

by taxidave on 6/25/17St. James Theatre - New York

Ever since I saw him in Fish Called Wanda, Kevin Kline has been one of my favorite actors. I recently saw him win the best actor award at the Tony's this year, and that motivated me to purchase tickets for his current appearance in the mail lead of Present Laughter. His performance was Outstanding in every respect. A must see. One cannot take your eyes off him while on stage.

Kline deserves the Tony for Best Actor!!

by Stanley1955 on 6/24/17St. James Theatre - New York

Kevin Kline was amazing, and certainly deserved the Tony Award he received earlier this month for his role in Present Laughter. The whole cast was very good, but he was stellar. Lots of laughs. Thanks so much to the St. James Theatre for presenting this show. It was a lovely theatre, and we will always treasure this experience. Sincerely, MBE & KP Stanley

    Sensational Show

by wrldcruisr on 6/24/17St. James Theatre - New York

Absolutely fabulous show, superbly acted and sublimely written! Kevin Kline is so deserving of his Best Lead Actor in a Play TONY Award this year; his comedic timing can not be surpassed. The performances of each and every cast member is outstanding. The set is stunning. I saw a WED matinee...I could have returned that evening and seen the 8 PM show!
