  • Technically, Visually, Conceptually Astonishing!

by JMHeel on 7/6/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Pilobolus Dance Theater is a must see! As the Dance Theater celebrates it's 40th Anniversary, new and old dances were infused to create an awe-inspiring show! The performances were shocking, provocative, thought provoking, ingenious, and fun!

I was disappointed they did not do anything remotely like what is in the picture above. [the sort of human pyramid]

  • by Anonymous on 7/6/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen. The stripped-down artistic beauty of the human body and what it can do through dance, acrobatics and pure physics was overwhelming. It was fun and beautiful and breathtaking. Highly recommend it to everyone.

  • Pilbolus = Fabulous!

What a wonderful show of raw physical talent with the grace of modern dance.

I thought some of the acts were to long, I was loosing interest in the pieces towards the its end. The first piece was unique and interesting. The flying saucer also was unique and interesting, however there was not much dancing. The piece with the lower view camera under the stage, was also entreteining and innovating. The piece before the intermission and the piece before the ending were to long and repetitive. Overall, it was OK, however last year was better.

This was an awesome show. Very sensual and unique. I liked some of the dances more than others, but overall it was supremely entertaining.

The company has an expectacular creativity, it is a unique show. However, the show only had 3 pieces??? If you do not have small children, I do not recommend you a children's matinee.

Apparently I should have done some background reading, because I was shocked when the dancers were naked. The first part was good, but after intermission it was fantastic. The theater however was extremely cold. Several of the other audience guests around me were also complaining about the temperature in the room.

Excellent show. Everything you would expect from a world renowed dance company

  • Too much talking

by DurhamNCmom on 7/4/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

The dancers are amazing but I was expecting more dancing and less talking. This dance company only did three "numbers" and the rest was having to listen to an MC and a Q and A at the end. I wanted to see more "shapes" and lifts that this company is known for and there was very very little of that.

  • Completely weird

by newtordu on 7/4/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

I had heard Pilobolus was one of the more "accessible" dance companies, but the performance I saw was completely out of left field. If you are expecting the cute "shadow shapes" that you might have seen on television, please know that they do none of that in their performance. In almost every piece, dancers wore naked-looking bodysuits and did weird stuff to weird music. I'm no newbie to dance and can handle mind-expanding performances, but this was just bizarre. :-(

The show this year was wonderful. I think it was my favorite one I've seen.

Really enjoyed the performance..first time. Wasn't sure about the purpose of the nudity..still not, maybe that is a function of being in my 60's...

No where on the DPAC website did it give a good idea of the shows contents. I bought tickets for my family, expecting to see dancing, music and costumes. Much to my dismay I had to sit through the performance with my 12 year old son, my 9 year old son and my disgruntled husband as we watched grown ups prancing around naked and nearly naked. Next time I will do a better job of researching shows.

  • Not So Much for Children

by Olddncr on 7/4/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

The July 2 children's matinee performance by Pilobolus (a company I usually love to watch) wasn't geared to children as I had expected. The first dance, "Untitled" is an old chestnut that I could appreciate, but not children. It is too abstract and spare, and I don't think children in attendance got any humor or storyline from it, much less appreciated the effort needed to pull off the "tall" characters. The second dance, with one dancer and two airborne flying robots, succeeded to some extent (my spouse liked it), but again it was kind of spare. The third and final dance might have been fun for a child to watch in a studio setting, but on stage the dance didn't give children much to relate to. I was expecting more color, more stage settings, more fantastical acrobatic creations, and the imagination one always expects of Pilobolus. The four-year-old with us kept asking if it would be over soon, and finally fell asleep.

  • Pilobolus kids matinee rocks for kids & adult!!!

by musicgirlsmommy on 7/4/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This is a great show for little kids (my daughter is 3) and for adults. My husband and I went to the children's matinee and know we'll be doing that next year in addition to getting tickets for the full performance for ourselves. Amazing artists and very interesting dances.

  • mediocre

by yellowbug1 on 7/3/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5

I took my niece who is 17 and a dancer as our big excursion during her NC visit, she found it to be mediocre and so did her mother and I - we all three had been incredibly excited about it and were very disappointed. I found it draggy and, frankly, boring. I don't object to nudity that serves a purpose but this just felt like nudity to have nudity..I didn't get the reason for the robotic airplanes.. they would be very cool in a different kind of setting (a robotics conference) but I found them distracting and not interesting I did like the dance that was video taped from below and wished that were longer. Clearly, they are incredibly talented dancers it's a shame that this did not showcase it an exciting way

The dances were creative and performed to perfection, but each number was much too long. We were not aware that there would be nudity and felt we should have been informed prior to the event.

Good show. There is both male and female nudity so be forewarned. All tasteful. My girlfriend, who studied modern dance, loved it. Overall, it was entertaining and enjoyable for me as well.
