Pigeons Playing Ping Pong in Concert
Funky jam group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong formed in 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland, when its original members met in a University of Maryland dorm. Releasing their first LP, ‘Funk E P,' the following year, the band would quickly find their sound in an explosive, energetic mix of funk, jazz, and electronic music reminiscent of Phish, Lettuce, and even the Grateful Dead. Their second album, ‘Psychology' (2014), upped their game and featured better production, tighter songwriting, and more focused singing from vocalists Greg Ormont, Jeremy Schon, and Ben Carrey. In 2016's ‘Pleasure,' the band delivered a cornucopia of wailing organs, sprawling melodies, shimmering backbeats, and groovy riffs. The group served up more lighthearted, sprawling psych-tinged funk with 2017's ‘Pizazz.' Their single "Doc" found them thriving with crisp horns and saxophones, while the seductive, groovy "Somethin' For Ya" shows how a little disco goes a long way when it comes to infusing their music with sexiness.
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong has taken on a pretty hearty touring schedule, sometimes playing up to 200 shows a year. In addition, they've hosted Domefest in Bedford, Pennsylvania, since 2009, attracting nearly 2,000 people every year. Their passionate fanbase, affectionately called "The Flock," turns out to see them whenever possible, including for their New Year's Eve headlining shows. This in addition to their numerous officially released live recordings, which give a window into the raucous parties that are Pigeons Playing Ping Pong shows. 2017's ‘The Great Outdoors Jam' captured the ethereal vibes, locked-in grooves, and wayward solos that can be found in their live shows. In 2018, they hit their first Bonnaroo, continuing their ascent. As guitarist and singer Jeremy Schon tells it, their live show "puts out as much energy as possible and promotes lightheartedness and positivity." Suffice it to say, these funk obsessives must be seen live to be truly experienced.
Excellent band. So talented. The dual guitars were amazing.
They were amazing start to finish. I didn’t stop dancing the entire show. The crowd was super energetic. The members of the band love what they do and it shows. A billion stars.
Pigeons are great we’ve seen them seven or eight times they never disappoint. Always a great show! Super talented musicians super tight playing. Great song writers!
They were opening at a festival i attended a few years back and stood out immediately. Seen them about 10 times since then and hope to see many more
What a show, They are so energetic. So fun. Love them. Only thing I was mad about is I didn't buy both nights. Will always buy tickets when near me. Thanks for a great time!!!!
My son turned me on to these guys, been w him five times now, they are absolutely incredible. I dont know what else to say but i cant wait to see them again and again!!!!!
It was so much fun and the participants are very friendly.
Pigeons were awesome on Friday night and even better on Saturday night. What a show! My wife and I love pigeons. They are our favorite band and did not disappoint. Can’t wait to see them again.
Pigeons just deliver! Such full and great sound for a 4 man. Tight musically. Awesome venue.
2 amazing shows the opening bands were 1st time for me and they deserve to be seen again and again. And the Pigeons are WIZARDS!!!!!!
Towards the beginning of this year, Spotify had recommended Pigeons to me and many of their songs were quickly added to my favorites. I think it was Spotify again that notified me that they would be playing at The Jefferson Theater in December. I got my ticket a couple of days before the show and excitedly made the drive to Charlottesville for my first jam-band experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the music, the crowed, and the venue. It was nice to get lost in the music and the crowd again. The opener Yam Yam was also an excellent discovery which I will have to keep an eye out for. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the next time Pigeons will be playing in the area!
High Energy music from beginning to end! Opening acts were equally good!
Awesome show by Dogs in a Pile & Pigeons Playing Ping Pong!! Excellent venue with awesome sound quality for this show!!
Had a great time at The Jefferson in Charlottesville jamming with The Yam Yams and Pigeons Playing Pingpong. A Great venue for a show. Not a bad place to view the stage anywhere. The Yam Yams got the night started and threw in a couple of great, unexpected old school songs by Hall and Oates and the Bee Gees. PPP finished out the night with a high energy set and great light show. Loved all the merch too. So happy ti pick posters and pins from both bands. Can't wait to go back for another show.
Really fun jam band! Wish they would play at our local joint. Will definitely see them again... and again.
The show was great. The hardest part was getting to the bathrooms lol.
House of Blues did an amazing job setting the stage for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Entry into the venue was easy with no wait. Luckily, they have snacks along with beverages at the venue given the early timing of the show. Check out the opener for the full experience! Whoever picked the opening band did a great job pairing the style to 'Pigeons'. Explore upstairs during the interlude and enjoy a smoke on the porch or the art and band merch! There's so much to this venue and the techs did an amazing job with sound and light quality. The crowd at Pigeons Playing Ping Pong always feels like family. It's nice to feel at home in the space too.
Soundstage was completely oversold. Felt dangerously packed. DON'T OVERSELL THE VENUE! Show however, was amazing. The Pigeons guys slayed, as is tradition.
Great show as usual from Pigeons. They continue to get better, and are always entertaining. If there's any critique in the less-than-stellar, it'd be that their second-set jams are a little - droll - sometimes? But they always pull back and kick it in the groin later. Soundstage however, completely oversold the show. Packed like sardines. Compare to the always awesome 8x10, who sold just enough tix for the two shows just before this to be full, but not "packed". Doesn't make for a good experience if you have to walk sideways.
Pigeons are incredible! High energy funk, sure to be a ridiculously fun show packed with grooves and jams guaranteed to get you moving! Baltimore Soundstage is however the worst venue in the DMV, constanty oversold and uncomfortably packed inside. Dark and depressing inside and random water leaks from the ceiling.
