About

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong in Concert

Funky jam group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong formed in 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland, when its original members met in a University of Maryland dorm. Releasing their first LP, ‘Funk E P,' the following year, the band would quickly find their sound in an explosive, energetic mix of funk, jazz, and electronic music reminiscent of Phish, Lettuce, and even the Grateful Dead. Their second album, ‘Psychology' (2014), upped their game and featured better production, tighter songwriting, and more focused singing from vocalists Greg Ormont, Jeremy Schon, and Ben Carrey. In 2016's ‘Pleasure,' the band delivered a cornucopia of wailing organs, sprawling melodies, shimmering backbeats, and groovy riffs. The group served up more lighthearted, sprawling psych-tinged funk with 2017's ‘Pizazz.' Their single "Doc" found them thriving with crisp horns and saxophones, while the seductive, groovy "Somethin' For Ya" shows how a little disco goes a long way when it comes to infusing their music with sexiness.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong has taken on a pretty hearty touring schedule, sometimes playing up to 200 shows a year. In addition, they've hosted Domefest in Bedford, Pennsylvania, since 2009, attracting nearly 2,000 people every year. Their passionate fanbase, affectionately called "The Flock," turns out to see them whenever possible, including for their New Year's Eve headlining shows. This in addition to their numerous officially released live recordings, which give a window into the raucous parties that are Pigeons Playing Ping Pong shows. 2017's ‘The Great Outdoors Jam' captured the ethereal vibes, locked-in grooves, and wayward solos that can be found in their live shows. In 2018, they hit their first Bonnaroo, continuing their ascent. As guitarist and singer Jeremy Schon tells it, their live show "puts out as much energy as possible and promotes lightheartedness and positivity." Suffice it to say, these funk obsessives must be seen live to be truly experienced.

    PPPPhilly

by My name is Doc on 12/19/23Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia - Philadelphia

First time at Brooklyn Bowl. Stood in the VIP viewing area. Intimate experience. Bowling not a distraction nor a noise problem. General admission was crowded and bar line kinda long but moves quickly. Lack of seating not a huge problem for 60 year old but additional seating would be appreciated but dining tables by merch area had good acoustics. Overall a great experience.

The boys did well and steady. It was fun they were joined by the Operators/Snack Time/ Nik Greely/Chalk Dinosaur. Thank god Live Nation was not involved.

by Trey on 12/19/23Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Pigeons never fails to put on an outstanding show. They leave it all out there on the stage every show. High energy, funky, psychedelic jams every time with great people and great lights. Please check them out if you ever have the chance!

Great Sound | Want to See

by Eddie Colorado on 12/13/23Saint Andrew's Hall - Detroit

The band performance was amazing. Tight. Love this venue. St Andrew Hall has the acoustics and the sound is clear in your face. Subs blew me away. On the other hand, I didn’t like the moving lights also in my face because you can’t see the band. Only dots. I prefer Pigeons 😜

FUN! Look at my little head bopping!

by Gratefullab on 11/21/23The Observatory North Park - San Diego

This was a great show. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong really made my birthday special with their San Diego show; sharing the stage with Dogs in a Pile. It was a real good time. Thank you! Disco, funk, and classic rock jam vibes combine to make a sound that will keep you moving and grooving all night long. The light shows and production made it a proper production that was as much fun to watch as it was to listen to.

by Bukit on 11/21/23The Observatory North Park - San Diego

Dogs in a Pile was the perfect opening act for the Pigeons. Really talented jam band with some funk and Grateful Dead inspiration. The Pigeons killed it. Tight and energetic. Very talented band. Fun upbeat vibe. The Observatory North Park is a great venue.
