i love patty and i love her music and her voice.but nothing compares to her original material. I wish we could have heard more of that especially because it was my first live show.

About
Patty Griffin is among the most consequential singer-songwriters of her generation, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together.
Over two decades, the 2x GRAMMY Award winner - and 7x nominee - and Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement award winner, has crafted a remarkable body of work in progress that prompted the New York Times to hail her for "[writing] cameo-carved songs that create complete emotional portraits of specific people...[her] songs have independent lives that continue in your head when the music ends."
2019 saw the acclaimed release of the renowned artist's GRAMMY Award-winning 10th studio recording, PATTY GRIFFIN. One of the most deeply personal recordings of Griffin's remarkable two-decade career and first-ever eponymous LP, PATTY GRIFFIN made a top 5 debut on Billboard's "Independent Albums" chart amidst unprecedented worldwide acclaim, and later, a prestigious GRAMMY Award for "Best Folk Album."
Griffin's new album, CROWN OF ROSES, is a deeply personal and introspective work that explores themes of identity, nature, family, and womanhood. Emerging from a creative drought during the pandemic, Griffin found herself re-evaluating the stories she'd long told herself. The result is an eight-track collection that is both sparse and emotionally rich, blending folk, Americana, and blues. With CROWN OF ROSES, Griffin offers a record that's both grounded and transcendent -- one that invites listeners to release old narratives, embrace new truths, and stay truly alive while they're here. Having crafted a rich catalog that chronicles love and death, heartache and joy, connection and detachment, Patty Griffin continues to push her art forward, as always imbuing every effort with compassion and craft, uncanny perception, and ever-increasing ingenuity.

Patty Sings!
by DirkW on 4/7/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5If you haven't heard Patty live before, and are wondering whether or not it's worth the effort, just go--she is an amazing singer, and the full power of her singing only comes through in a live performance. I just saw her gospel show at Zellerbach in Berkeley, CA, which was a stellar performance with Patty backed by some extraordinary musicians, including the great Buddy Miller, who also opened the show with a great set that had many in the audience eager to know more about Buddy (he was named artist of the decade by the roots journal No Depression). It's good to hear more people really singing these days!
Patty Griffin rocks the gospel
by sugarbrows on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 4 out of 5I was not so sure I would be treated to the usual outstanding performance by my favorite singer/songwriter Patty Griffin. Her latest CD of mostly gospel covers, while very good (and I like that genre) is not what I like best from her. But I was surprised by a fabulous show, despite sub-par hall acoustics. I never miss an opportunity to see Patty perform live, so I am glad I did not miss this one. Her tour-buddy Buddy Miller delivered the opening set (including some VERY entertaining stories), and we enjoyed his performance as well, although Patty's back-up and duet vocals were hard to hear over the loud guitar and band, and Buddy's booming vocals. All of that was forgotten when Patty took the stage to headline the remainder of the evening, with Buddy and the band providing the perfect mix of hardcore blues or softer vocal and instrumental accompaniment, depending on the song. They really rocked it out, and Patty's pipes sure fit that gospel music well. She included a few of her older favorites. The show had me humming all the way home.
Patty Griffin is a treasure!
by Anonymous on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5Patty Griffin is thrilling. Her voice is exceptional and her soulfulness is astonishing. The performances were profoundly moving, especially the ballads.
Sound problems in Zellerbach
by hickup on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 3 out of 5The sound was so brassy and shrill up in the tiers, that we got our seats moved to the orchestra which was better, but there were still problems. The sound people didn't seem to have done their sound checks or understood the nature of Zellerbach. People around us were also complaining about the ear splitting sound issues. Patty had some moments of brilliance, and some moments of pitchiness. Still, the die hard fans seemed thrilled with it all.
Sublime!
by Dommo on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5Buddy started off the evening with his own set, invited Patty and the Band up for a kmajority of his songs, and then Patty came on with a set that included a lot of tunes from the new album Downtown Church, but she made sure to include some old favorites including Heavenly Day, Mary, a Waylon Jennings cover (I'm a Believer), and Up to the Mountain! Wonderful show, I can't wait to see her again!!
Great show at Zellerbach Hall
by Stevenn1 on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 4 out of 5Patty's voice was in great form, and she had a nice full band. 2 guitars (including Buddy Miller), drums, standup bass, keyboards. They did Buddy Miller songs for the first section, then took an intermission before starting Patty's set. I knew Buddy Miller was a great guitarist but I didn't realize what a great voice he has. She did a lot of the gospel type music from her latest album, and it was a great show. I'd say it had its strong moments, but didn't really fully grab me as much as her previous concerts have. Maybe because we had less Patty Griffin songs and performances due to the fact that Buddy Miller songs were featured for the first 30-45 minutes. His songs and playing are great, but that combined with the featuring of all the new gospel type spirituals kind of took away from all the Patty Griffin classics we like hearing and that really build up a head of steam. Since she had an organist/pianist with her, she never sat down at the piano either, which is something I missed. Very good show though, overall.
Voice of a Gritty Angel
by CathyHHH on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5My first time seeing Patty perform live, and I was amazed. Her voice is as wonderful, flexible, and piercing as on any CD I've listened to. Not a lot of her original material in this concert - she's touring with her new CD, which is mostly rootsy gospel standards a la The Staples and even a song by Darlene Love Coates of the Harmonettes. If you don't know what that means, don't let it throw you. She's astounding belting this stuff, and her band rocks with it. Lots of dynamics in this show. Terrific Nashville players backing her, and Buddy Miller was a surprise. Great voice, tasteful lead guitar licks and kind of a funny storyteller.

Awesome show! Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller are the best! Blues, Country, Folk and Gospel Music. A beautiful night!
Fabulous!!
by GeeSue on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 5 out of 5The concert started with Buddy Miller doing a set with Patty as his backup singer. Buddy rocked as always, and chatted between the songs. I thought the sound was way too loud for that set and was worried about Patty's set but it was adjusted properly. Patty had an awesome band (and Buddy was part of her back-up). She sang through most of her new album, but also did some old ones and some never recorded new stuff too that was so great we still wanted more after 2 hours of solid Patty! I really loved her acoustic set the best. "Coming Home To Me" has to be my favorite song!
Love "Downtown Church"? You'll love the show.
by ntmurphy on 4/6/10Zellerbach Hall - BerkeleyRating: 3 out of 5For me, "Mary" and "Heavenly Day" were the highlights. She played 3 songs from previous albums. The rest was from Downtown Church. She sang the entire album, but one song. I understand album promotion (or maybe I don't). Had hoped for a little more from her earlier albums. Her voice is wonderful ... no complaints there. It's not often I get drowsy at a concert. I was pretty drowsy.

great opportunity to hear patty and buddy miller play together. while she calls herself a lapsed catholic at best, she clearly enjoys singing the selected gospel songs with a lot of spirit, and the rest of her band is excellent.
Patty, beautiful as always

Patty and Buddy at the Crystal Ballroom
by ValentineMT on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5The show was awesome. The music was better than awesome. The venue leaves a lot to be desired. I will probably never attend another concert at the Crystal in Portland. All but about about 50 people have to stand for the entire show. I stood for as long as I could, until I was in so much pain I had to leave and go home. I knew what to expect having been to one other concert there, and I was willing to endure it to see Patty and Buddy because I'm a big fan. Never again. The sound was good, but I think the mixing could have been improved. Buddy's voice overpowered Patty's too much during the first set... their other lead guitarist's solo was screwed because of some kind of sound issue, and the bass was rather muddled. Plus the before concert and during the break music they put on was pretty bad.
Patty brought tears to my eyes
by Petshopboy on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5Fantastic show. The combination of Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin was unforgettable. She mostly played songs from her newest album which, although not my favorite of her's, was still really great.
Patty Griffin was amazing
by silvertonflyer on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5While it is hard for me to stand in one spot for over 3 hours, I would gladly do it anytime if it meant I got to hear Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and her band. Incredible voices, very tight backup band, all the songs from her best CD ever - Downtown Church.
Patty is superb!
by rubynan7 on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5Patty Griffin put on an excellent show. I enjoyed Buddy Miller also, but Patty reigned supreme. Excellent venue for promoting the songs on her new CD. Her voice was crystal clear, and anyone could see that she was having a blast up on the stage. She engaged the audience with both her rapport and her presence. I would return to see her any day any where!
PattyGriffin - incredible!
by RainyMonday on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5This was the second time I'd seen her, with a ten year break in the middle. She was more incredible, totally seasoned pitch-perfect voice, and yet she did not seem at all like she was just going through the motions. She truly enjoys her time playing for the crowd and makes it a really poignant and wonderful experience for everyone. You'd be hard pressed to not drop a few tears and hug the person you came with at some point too. Wow. She is one of my favorites.
Patty never lets you down.
by nicolknfly on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5Patty is a pro and has such an amazing voice that it's hard not to be blow away with her performances. I didn't know the new stuff but it was very beautiful. My only regret is that she didn't play much of her old stuff, I've been a fan for many years so I really wanted to hear some more songs from her previous work.
Short set bad sound
by Pdxsoundman on 4/5/10McMenamins Crystal Ballroom - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5The set was very short. The sound in the Crystal Ballroo was unnatural. She was clearly just riding on the coattais of her name. Overall this was a disappointing show.
