Passion pit- dancey goodness
by arobott on 1/9/10Terminal 5 - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5Hearing this was a sold out show for three nights in a row, my friend and I were worried we would be bombarded with flocks of teenie bopper children in an overheated, unbearably crowded scene. However, Terminal 5 turned out to be just the right venue for our Passion Pit experience. Doors opened at 8pm and the opening band was on by 8:45pm. We were pleasantly surprised with Joy Formidable, who easily out played the second opener- Rural Alberta Advantage. Joy Formidable certainly set the mood of the night with their dancey tunes and high energy performance.
Passion pit took the stage before 11pm. Opening with "Better Things", off of their EP, Chunk of Change, was a fine way to start the rave, at least for their fans. By looking around, you could see a bunch of "Little Secrets", "Sleepyhead" aficionados left speechless when older, more obscure tracks were played. The crowd could have been more fun, some were dancing/jumping/flailing and some were shooting death stares or rude words when bumped into. Regardless, Passion Pit killed the set. With their flashy strobe-y boxy screen decor on stage, and lead Michael Angelakos hopping around with the mic, Passion Pit delivered a show you would expect from listening to their cd, and more! It’s refreshing that this band makes genuine music and does not enhance much of anything while recording records; yes that falsetto is real.
The only criticism of the night was that "Cuddle Fuddle" was not played, despite our persistent chanting during the lulls in between songs. The encore included a fun and unexpected cover of “Dreams” by The Cranberries and, of course, "Sleepyhead," which was, unfortunately, not acoustic, but nonetheless super fun- high energy, which can sum up the entire T5 experience.
