  • OBT

by jerrycitot on 3/7/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

I drove 625 miles from S.F. Bay Area to Portland this weekend, mostly to see Christopher Stowell's Oregon Ballet Theatre's "4 Temperments" and "Midsummer Nites' Dream," and both were very good, especially Balanchine's "4" which thru the mounting by his mother, Francia Russell, who danced in this at NYCB in late 50s/60s, gave it an authentic rendition that I very much enjoyed. I kept thinking of such dancers from that time as Maria Tallchief, Tanny LeClerq, Diana Adams, Patricia Wilde, Jacques D'Amboise, Conrad Ludlow & Melissa Hayden. The Midsummer was also good, but the stage was too small for all the sets/choreography, but overall, out of a 1 to 10 rating, I would give this company and performance an 8.5, which is quite good for a company that has limited resources and also a limited, ballet-wise, audience. My 1st visit to Portland, and thanks to Chris, it was worth the 625 miles driven each way.

Midsummer Night's Dream was fantastic. Excellent story, dancing, and costumes. Well done to all!

  • A Midsummer Night's Dream-Brilliant

    by ballet1friend on 3/7/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I really enjoyed this ballet. I was immediately impressed by the simple, elegant, and beautiful scenery. This proved to be the same all through the ballet. I enjoyed the children in the various scenes, and the principal dancers, soloists, and corp. were fantastic as always. I have to say that I am relieved and thrilled to have the OBT orchestra back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please don't ever let them go again.

  • Don't attend on Children's day

by WaterlotusNW on 3/7/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

When I purchased the box seats several months ago, it was not stated that it was only half a show (meaning the 4 Seasons was not included) or that is was the Children's performance matinee and no intermission. I would give the performance an 8.5 but the audience a 2.5. I feel cheated (the show was only an hour and 20 minutes) not to mention the noise of the kids in the audience and will hesitate next time on buying tickets online.

  • TOO SHORT (and too pricey) for just 1 hour long!

by Anonymous on 3/7/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

The event was very expensive...and TOO SHORT! It was just an hour long. I would have enjoyed a first act and a second act and an intermission.

  • fantastic sets and dancing

by odysius on 3/7/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

The story is older than I am but it is always fun to return to Faerieland. The sets were alive and the dancers beautiful. Of course you cannot go wrong when everyone wears wings!

  • OBT: Midsummer Night's Dream

    by Mommasita28 on 3/6/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The show was breathtaking. There was comedy, and playfull humour throughout the show. I brought my six year old daughter and she enjoyed seeing the children dressed in butterfly costumes. They really did a great job! I would recomend this show for parents with children.

  • Midsummer Night's Dream was magical!

by Zarif on 3/5/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

As I expected and hoped, last night's production of Felix Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream was magical. Adding to the rich production values and fine dancing were the touches of humor above and beyond that inherent in the piece. The dancers brought charm to the stage. By stark (and not in a good way) contrast, the Hindemith The Four Temperaments seemed flat. While minimalism can work, in this instance nothing seemed to come together--but I am not fond of Hindemith. So five stars to Dream, and perhaps one to Temperaments.

  • Costumes and performance were fantastic

Excellent - great set, costumes and performances. Thank you.

  • A Midsummer Night's Dream was truly beautiful!!

by Anonymous on 3/5/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I thought the set and costumes were truly gorgeous and fanciful. It was a tremendous pleasure to have the OBT orchestra back and performing. Live music with the live ballet performance absolutely enhances the audience's experience. The lead dancers were all skilled and exhibited wonderful artistry and athleticism. I would highly recommend this performance.

  • Great time, great music, amazing dancing!

    by Teresa21 on 3/5/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

We weren't sure we really wanted to see this particular ballet; it seemed like it might be a little over the top, what with the costumes, but I'm so glad we did go, after all! It was amazing to me how well one of my favorite Shakespeare plays was translated into dance, and the choreography by Christopher Stowell was creative and clever, making you laugh one moment, and your heart ache the next. In addition, I hadn't thought one way or the other about the shorter performance preceding the title event, the Four Temperaments, but it was also great, very well done and the dancing was full of feeling; you could tell which temperament the dancers were embodying without having to be told, and the choreography's use of the full body, never failing to make use of the slightest movement or gesture to get the point across made it even better. All the movements used lifts and pairs so expertly that it was hard to remember that it isn't a simple thing to lift another person so gracefully and slowly, and each pair danced totally in sync with each other. I'd have to say the third variation was my favorite, possibly because the movements of the dancers brought a smile to my face. It is amazing how someone dancing their heart out can also appear phlegmatic, but they did it!

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a great ballet with lots of colorful costumes and scenery. The actors did a wonderful job throughout the ballet. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys the arts.

We enjoyed the ballet. We had up front seats but we were unable to see the dancers feet which is part of the fun.

It was a wonderful performance and as usual, a well balance program. THe children in the performance were especially charming.

  • Midsummer Night's Dream was unforgettable

by Erlenmeyer on 3/5/10Keller Auditorium - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

After seeing the 1935 movie in 1935 (with Mickey Rooney as Puck and James Cagney as Bottom) "Midsummer Night's Dream" has been my favorite classical work. Christopher Stowell's choreography, and the OBT ballet corps, was absolutely fantastic. I went to the opening night on 27 February and was so impressed I went again on March 4th.

I guess it was called 'the four temperments', could be off there. everyone was in black and white. The orchestra was sooo good. their music was soo relaxing, I kept drifting off. My Daughter kept elbowing me. Then intermission arrived. Finaly the play began, There was comedy and color. I could get into this. not fall asleep. and THEN.......the power went out..........very sad.....was getting into the message. Atleast my Daughter and I will be able to see the whole performance soon. My Daughter has been wanting to see this performance for many months. She is not usually into 'culture", which makes me happy to be able to share these sorts of things with her. I am glad she has come around and grew up. Wish my older Daughter would do the same.
