Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football History

From the Four Horsemen to the Gipper to Rudy to "Theismann for Heisman," Notre Dame has a legendary football program. The school has 11 national championships in football, but that doesn't begin to measure the shadow the Irish have cast across the game. It started with Knute Rockne, who coached from 1918 to 1930 and only lost 12 games in that span. It was Rockne who delivered the famous halftime speech in which he invoked the deathbed plea of a former player, George Gipp, to "win one for the Gipper." There was the "Game of the Century" in 1966 in which the 9-0 Irish, under coach Ara Parseghian, played the 9-0 Michigan State Spartans to a 10-10 tie.

Notre Dame has had seven Heisman Trophy winners, including Paul Hornung, Johnny Lujack and Tim Brown, the team’s most recent recipient, who became the first wide receiver to be awarded. More unforgettable moments from Fighting Irish alumni include Joe Montana and the Chicken Soup Game and Tony Rice running the option offense all the way to a national championship in 1988.

University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football at Notre Dame Stadium

Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana was designed by the same firm, Osborn Engineering, that designed the original Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. It was built in 1930. Watching over the proceedings is Touchdown Jesus, the nickname given to the mural — Millard Sheets' The Word of Life — on the nearby Hesburgh Library.

    Fighting Irish were great

by nomdnaforme on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

We went to a pro football game at Metlife last year, college was so much better. Fans were much better behaved the excitement of seeing wonderful college athletes trying their hardest to win the game for their school. The rivalry between fans was so much more civilized than at a pro game. Loved seeing the band perform during halftime.

    ND vs SYR.

by Anonymous on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

These seats were accessed through the CHASE mezzanine. Excellent food selection with comfortable seating in the eating area. Pleasantly surprised.

While ND games always fun; this one not so much

by AvonLiz on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

This game taught me an important lesson. Don't buy tickets to a college game at a non-school stadium that has the time as "TBD." The game was supposed to be noon or 1pm. ND is undefeated so it was moved to a nighttime game for TV. Plus to add insult to having to arrange our day, the tickets went on Groupon at almost half price. Many young children were at the game and it just got too late for them. The partying people got very drunk. About 6 people in the row in front of us were ejected by security for fighting and using very foul language. We are a Notre Dame family having gone out to South Bend many times while our daughter was at school and even being season tickets holders. This game just was not fun.

    Unforgetttable family tradition

by mofoman on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

It's rich in tradition. Not a better way to spend a Saturday nite with your children. Seats were perfect.

Game was great; Stadium was not

by Anonymous on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

No problem with the seats. The stadium is not great; the scoreboard is too much about advertising and not about communicating info to the fans. The most difficult was there were no replays on the big screen of crucial and controversial plays. I would rather watch the game on TV to receive more info. IThe lack of it gave us gaps of pure boredom and confusion.

    GREEN not Orange

by mullinsjtm1 on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

I waited for many years to witness my Fightin' IRISH football team LIVE. The Meadowlands could have been a better host. WHY? 1. When we arrived at "GIANTS" stadium aka METLIFE we had to wait until the parking lots got cleaned because a FLEA Market was scheduled until 2pm (what a mess). We were advised gates to be opened by 3pm. NOT SO...paid $43 for preferred parking...None given 2. As a Giants ticket holder, I have been to many games at METLIFE. In the past, I especially enjoy viewing the BIG screen to watch replays. Now I see the BIG screen have turned into half screen because continuous mundane commercial ads now occupy half of the used-to-be BIG screens. Aren't we already exposed to enough commercials? The Half screens do not make it for a favorable viewing experience. Please give me FULL screens....I need you to think about it for the fans.

by JoeDem on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

    Notre Dame vs Syracuse

by Labhouse on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

We had 3 tickets for section 116, row 1. The seats were amazing. A little pricey but that's why you pay extra for no one sitting in front of you. Also bought the VIP parking pass and we got to park right outside the stadium, also money well spent. MetLife stadium was great. The game was great. The tickets were great. Will def. be doing it again.

    Syracuse football

by Katiep11 on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

The game was great. But the fights in the stands was a bit irritating. There was a lot of extremely drunk fan who had to be controlled by security and NJ police!

    Syracuse fans

by Anonymous on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

This last game was my 4th Notre Dame game at the Meadowlands and was by far the worst of them all. From before the National Anthem to the end of the game the Syracuse fans were an out of control drunken mob in the section I was in. Some of them were removed in handcuffs by NJ State Troopers. Others were obscene the whole night. People in the first row stood for a great portion of the game and ignored complaints from those behind them. There were no less than 5 fights in the section we were in and the sections on both sides of us. By half time I wished I had not purchased the tickets but stayed home and watched it on tv. It was a terrible experience for my 3 sons and I, we won't be making the same mistake again

    Notre Dame was amazing

by Lynnie27 on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Had a great time, teams played great. Security was good felt safe with all the state police presence. Felt the food was over priced. Was disappointed the stadium ran out of shirts with Notre Dame and Syracuse on them with game day date employees said they were given a few hundred for 50,000 people Wanted to buy one for my cousin in the Marines who couldn't attend the game.
