Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football History

From the Four Horsemen to the Gipper to Rudy to "Theismann for Heisman," Notre Dame has a legendary football program. The school has 11 national championships in football, but that doesn't begin to measure the shadow the Irish have cast across the game. It started with Knute Rockne, who coached from 1918 to 1930 and only lost 12 games in that span. It was Rockne who delivered the famous halftime speech in which he invoked the deathbed plea of a former player, George Gipp, to "win one for the Gipper." There was the "Game of the Century" in 1966 in which the 9-0 Irish, under coach Ara Parseghian, played the 9-0 Michigan State Spartans to a 10-10 tie.

Notre Dame has had seven Heisman Trophy winners, including Paul Hornung, Johnny Lujack and Tim Brown, the team’s most recent recipient, who became the first wide receiver to be awarded. More unforgettable moments from Fighting Irish alumni include Joe Montana and the Chicken Soup Game and Tony Rice running the option offense all the way to a national championship in 1988.

University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football at Notre Dame Stadium

Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana was designed by the same firm, Osborn Engineering, that designed the original Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. It was built in 1930. Watching over the proceedings is Touchdown Jesus, the nickname given to the mural — Millard Sheets' The Word of Life — on the nearby Hesburgh Library.

Parking was the only negative. Took 45 minutes to go a quarter of a mile. VIP parking meant squat. Other than that game was great and the stadium was awesome

Great access via the MetLife 50 club. Decent pre-game food.

Stick to games on college campuses

by justaNDfan on 10/1/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

The game was sloppy on both sides but an enjoyable spectacle in a stadium built for professional football. But the atmosphere outside was awful -- the confusing parking lot layout, the lack of adequate signage, the drunken tailgaters, the acres of debris, the clueless attendants, the impossible parking lot exit configuration.

    Great Seats For The Money

by Bigt2610 on 10/1/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

I went to the game with my son, and we had a pretty good time. It would of been much better, but there were so many beer drinking knuckle heads. It is a shame that they allow drinking the way they do at these games. I had beer spill on my back, as well as stepping in it. The game it self was great.

    Irish take care of business

by JB628 on 10/1/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Not their best played game but as a fan I will gladly always take the "W". We got the special parking and it really made a difference with the overall experience. we had 30 altogether at the game and will be back again in Oct. 1, 2016 when the Irish return. Even had folks form South Bend join us. Seats were terrific and weather was absolutely perfect. Couple of disappointments...No band and players did not go to a corner and sing Alma Mater. Syracuse maybe from New York State but Notre Dame is the New York/New Jersey favorite team. They always sell out and set attendance records no matter the venue. Come on Jack Swarbrick the band should always come to this area.

    Notre Dame game was AWESOME!!!

by NDno1Fan on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

The game was great! Our seats were awesome - on the 50 yd line. PA system needs some work - couldn't hear a word that was being said. Color needed to be adjusted (orange appeared to be red). Tickets were a little pricey, but we enjoyed the whole experience.

    Boring

by RDex on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

There was really no fanfare leading up to the game. The souvenir stands did not have much to offer and there were hardly any instant replays and it kept the stadium fans in the dark.

Notre Dame was great to watch up close

by RyanC1010 on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

The seats were great as well the view from the first row in 124. The only negative comment would be that the usher directed me all the way down to the first row in 124 but the way the first row is situated, I actually had to use the next entrance. I have been to MetLife stadium in the past but sat upstairs in the 300 section, those seats still had a great view but its just a totally different feeling when you are in the first row watching your favorite college team run out of the tunnel. Unforgettable !! Also, a very special moment from the nite was when the head official flipped the coin toss coin to a kid sitting right behind me. It was an awesome gesture by the referee to make that kids experience unforgettable and I think he should be applauded and recognized for the gesture. I believe I attached a quick video with the young fan holding the coin.

    Good game, poor stadium staff

by JoePutz on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Site lines at the stadium were very good, but stadium attendants and security non-existent. It seemed they are more interested in hiding rather than controlling fans.

    The Irish Never Disappoint!

by GalwayGal on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

The weather was perfect, the crowd electric, the venue beautiful, and the initial parking situation a nightmare! Our group of ten were able to purchase great seats together in the end zone. We had a great view of the entire game and halftime activities. The staff members were extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful and the security thorough but unobtrusive. We had a wonderful time and fully enjoyed ourselves. The only negative aspect was the disorganization trying to enter the parking lot, where there were no clear instructions of which lines led to which parking areas. We had purchased a priority parking permit in advance, wishing to be close to the stadium and hoping to avoid a traffic backlog, but when we arrived about two hours prior to game time, there were no specified lines for priority parking and just general chaos. After waiting generally at a standstill for quite a while, one woman thankfully appeared who tried to move employees and permitted vehicles into the right lane. That was extremely helpful, but it would have been great for those with permits to have been directed to that lane initially, not after a long wait mixed in with those waiting to pay.

    A Win is a Win

by Anonymous on 9/30/14MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

seats were absolutely fabulous, could not have asked for better, but I did purchase in November of last year . Everyone, staff, ushers, security were really friendly, and crowds were very mannerly. We did not see any rowdiness, in our section.
