Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football History

From the Four Horsemen to the Gipper to Rudy to "Theismann for Heisman," Notre Dame has a legendary football program. The school has 11 national championships in football, but that doesn't begin to measure the shadow the Irish have cast across the game. It started with Knute Rockne, who coached from 1918 to 1930 and only lost 12 games in that span. It was Rockne who delivered the famous halftime speech in which he invoked the deathbed plea of a former player, George Gipp, to "win one for the Gipper." There was the "Game of the Century" in 1966 in which the 9-0 Irish, under coach Ara Parseghian, played the 9-0 Michigan State Spartans to a 10-10 tie.

Notre Dame has had seven Heisman Trophy winners, including Paul Hornung, Johnny Lujack and Tim Brown, the team’s most recent recipient, who became the first wide receiver to be awarded. More unforgettable moments from Fighting Irish alumni include Joe Montana and the Chicken Soup Game and Tony Rice running the option offense all the way to a national championship in 1988.

University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football at Notre Dame Stadium

Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana was designed by the same firm, Osborn Engineering, that designed the original Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. It was built in 1930. Watching over the proceedings is Touchdown Jesus, the nickname given to the mural — Millard Sheets' The Word of Life — on the nearby Hesburgh Library.

    ND vs Navy

by rescueantny on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

The New Meadowlands Stadium is BIG! Even though Navy was the home team, it seemed like a Notre Dame hame game in the number of fans rooting for Notre Dame. My seats were very good in the endzone. I liked those huge video screens, WOW, they were big. As for the game, Navy came to play and they kicked Notre Dame's butt. The flyover by the Navy fighter jets was awesome, perfect timing as they ran out between the cadets.

    Our Lady Lays an Egg

by Arkadin on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

The new stadium is gloomy on the inside and boring on the outside. The stadium was a surprising dud. Notre Dame looked unprepared and unmotivated. The coaching staff seemed to have failed defensively. The starting quarterback for ND had receivers open, but threw the ball late or short. Navy deserved to win. Navy totally outplayed ND and they were better coached. What happened to ND would not have happened to a team coached by Lou Holtz.

    Navy-Notre Dame

by Nastymac on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

As a Notre Dame fan, I'm still waiting for them to show up. As far as the venue, I can't believe they spent 1.6 billion for that. the sightlines are great, but no better than they were at the old stadium. Parking is worse than the old stadium and to get from the lot to the stadium is some ridiculous rat-in-a maze deal.

New Meadowlands Stadium Notre Dame - Navy

by Gillie56 on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Great seats. New Stadium is beautiful but very very expensive. From the tickets to the $8.50 hotdogs. You need close to $500 for 2 people to go to a game. I would do it again but not for a very long time.

    Game was great!

by roxmike on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

I was very pleased with the event. The tickets were a gift to my husband for his birthday. He loved it, even though he was torn, as he is a fan of both teams. Ultimately, he rooted for Navy as he was a navy man himself when he was younger. Thanks for a great time!

    Game was more than amazing!!!

by PrincessJennie79 on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

The New Meadowlands Stadium is an awesome place to see a sporting event. Our seats were perfect only 23 rows from the field. It was awesome to see our Navy on the field singing our National Anthem, sad for us Notre Dame fans though since they got their butts handed to them. Security was very good on keeping untolerable fans under control and didn't tolerate any type of violence or heckling of other fans. The food & drinks are pricey but the normal for a football stadium. Parking was a little rough because tailgaters were only allowed one parking spot per car but were utilitizging two or three which security could have been a little better on enforcing that. All in all it was a great time!

    New Stadium Stinks.....

by krazyk57 on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

This was my first and last time to that dump.....Parking was the worst......As for the New Stadium....Try to find your seats....You would think if you go up to 200 level , you could walk around the whole thing....Nope....you have to go up to the 300....then go back down....And the employees have no idea how to get you there...Then you walk in....Try to find the score and down....TV for life......!

    Notre Dame vs Navy

by JoeWillie on 10/25/10New Meadowlands Stadium - East Rutherford

Venue and seats were great. $25 to park is absurd. Game result was disappointing.
