My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Audio reception

The sound from our seats at stage right was not good and the heavy cockneye accents didn't help.

We thoroughly enjoyed this production of a Broadway Classic. The orchestra, music, staging, singing and performers were first rate.

I really enjoyed My Fair Lady. The singing and dancing were superb and left a smile on my face the whole time. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, however.

Kind of a hassle with only having tickets on phone. Did not realize all bags would be searched and no water allowed. Can buy for $4. Play was great. Really enjoyed it. Seats were good. People working at theater friendly an helpful

It wasn’t as good as I had hoped. Wouldn’t see it again. Disappointed

  • Love the show

by Pegasus on 3/1/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Love the performance. Do not appreciate getting emails about 1/2 price or deeply discounted prices a few weeks before the show. We paid full price of nearly $500 per ticket. Outrageously expensive. Orchestra tickets, which is what I would have preferred, was going for $1000 each. For the future, I will not buy tickets at full price, but wait for discount tickets.

  • Latecomers ruin the experience

by Jane on 3/1/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

The production itself was great, but in both the initial stages of the show and after intermission, the ushers allowed late guests to disturb patrons who had the decency to respect the time and be in their seats punctually. The latecomers took their sweet time picking out their seats with the cell phone lights on and blocked a half-row of patrons from enjoying the show. The venue instructions stated that late patrons would be held off from entering the venue until a suitable time that would not disturb other patrons. That was not honored. Very disappointing!

  • Mostly great

I loved most of the play but almost couldn’t tell when it was over. I wished for a big musical ending.

The performance was fabulous!! Voices, acting, staging was beautiful! Unfortunately, many people were admitted after the play started. Because there is no middle aisle, they needed to pass in front of us making their way to their seats. Very distracting!!!

  • Memories

by Lindy on 2/28/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

My Fair Lady, the show itself, was fun! However, our experience was negatively impacted by the theater. People were allowed to go into the show 10-15 minutes AFTER it had started, making it very difficult to hear, see and enjoy the performance. This happened at both the start of the show and after intermission.

  • A Belated Christmas Gift

by Lori on 2/28/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

This was a gift for my 82-year-old mother-in-law. We all looked forward to it, but were very disappointed that people were allowed to enter the theatre after the show had started. This happened after intermission as well and the people scooting past to get to their seats caused everyone around them to miss parts of the show. It really diminished the experience.

  • Delightful

by BG on 2/28/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

My Fair Lady is an all time favorite! The show was nicely done! The sets were clever and moved about seamlessly. Every voice was beautiful and songs were the right volume. I only had one problem- Eliza has a glorious singing voice but her speaking voice - I found hard to hear. Can her speaking volume be increased? Only one small flaw! I’m still humming the tunes - 3 days later❤️

  • Great Performance but Parking a Nightmare!

by Dave G on 2/28/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Performance was great but we were late due to ridiculously long lines to pay for parking at the lot across the street! Recommend getting there at least 30 minutes early.

  • excellent

One of my husbands favorite movies, and he was so excited he gave me a kiss on the cheek at intermission and said how much he loved it. Can go wrong with that! Singing, staging, costumes, telling of the story itself with scenery, all well done, couldnt be happier!
