My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

We are old. We saw the My Fair Lady movie in 1967. The play was amazing. The acting was great. The songs were what we remembered... The stage scenery changes were flawless. The seating rows were long and we were up and down with the passers-by.

  • Henry Higgins or Sheldon Cooper???

by Rosy on 2/26/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Generally it was an OK show but the opening scene outside the Opera House was truly terrible! The first rule of theater or public speaking is not to rush delivery of your lines or speech. Higgins was far more Sheldon Cooper than a 1920's English aristocrat! He rushed EVERYTHING...his lines, his movements...it was like watching a sped up movie! Also the direction in the first scene was dire. The street people were making so much din that it was impossible to hear what the principal actors were saying. The discussion between Higgins and Eliza and Pickering is supposed to explain to the audience the whole premise of the play/musical, which is that in 1920's England even if a common street person came into a lot of money, they would never be accepted into the middle/upper classes because of the way they speak. Their thick Cockney accents, choice of vocabulary and slangy way of speaking keeps them at the lowest end of society. Pickering bets Higgins, who is a linguistics professor that he can't speech train Eliza so that she can be passed off as upper class. None of this was at all clear because the opening scene was just a complete cacophony! Eliza is the ONLY one who is supposed to be difficult to understand until she learns to speak like a fair lady. Anyway it did get progressively better although Mrs Pierce's broad Scottish accent made her impossible to understand and she seemed to deliver most of her lines facing away from the audience. To give praise where it was due, Eliza and Freddie acted and sang beautifully, Pickering and Mrs Higgins characters were well acted and Albert Doolittle was masterful. The music was superb, the costumes were excellent and the main set was very good, but who thought it was clever to hang a banner resembling a huge mustache above the actors in the Ascot Race scene??? Weird! My Fair Lady is one of my favorite musicals and I've seen very good High School and Community theater productions of it. I would rate this one 3 out of 5.

  • Well worth it

by MKS on 2/26/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Mostly, it was great, even if the lead man (Prof. Higgins) seemed just a bit uncomfortable in his role. Everyone else was very good and the show moved fast, never bogging down except near the end when Eliza paused … between … each … word … trying to show emotion, I guess, but she needed to get going already, before she lost her audience! So, speed up that emo scene, but otherwise all scenes were great — fantastic ensemble scenes in particular, the top-notch singing & dancing so impressive! Along with the spectacular sets, this is Broadway at its best.

by Gia on 2/26/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

Sheesh not a great show, couldn’t understand what they were saying, no efforts to modernize it a bit or make it ready for broadway, shows also 3 hours long

Singing and scenes were better in Budapest, as well as the price

  • Loverly

by Lynne on 2/26/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Loved the songs and performances of them by a very talented cast. I bought the Broadway soundtrack ( 1956 with Julie Andrews & Rex Harrison) because I just can’t get the songs out of my head. Speaking voices came through okay through the sound system, but not as clear as a recording. That’s really the only venue issue, as everyone was friendly and helpful. Electronic tix were a breeze!

  • Great music. Great singing

by J. T. on 2/25/23San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

My Fair Lady was wonderful! It's been over 30 years since I have seen it live. The story, the music is still magic. This production was filled with great singers, actors, dancers and musicians. Very animated and well timed. Go see it!

  • Captivating

by Amy R. on 2/15/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 5 out of 5

The 2.5+ hours seemed like only minutes and my friend and I looked at each other when it was over with huge smiles on our faces! I would go see again tonight if I could. Simply amazed by the performances, the music, the simple stage backdrops which put most of the emphasis on the actors, and of course the story itself is a delightfu classic. Didn't want it to end...!

  • Enjoyable to deplorable

by Mr Mark on 2/12/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 2 out of 5

First half was definitely enjoyable and applaudable. There was a great disappointment in the script change for the purpose of bowing to the culture’s insistence that everything must include sexually perverse, gay and transgender connections. That’s not part of the original classic this play was derived from and the scene was so vulgar that I turned away and would have walked out if I had children with me. Definitely not an act to perform in front of children, and there were quite a few children present. It should be noted ahead of time of how unfamily friendly the scene is. If I had known in advance of the morally depraved scene I would never had attended. It’s also quite disappointing that in so many attempts the script writers portrayed such a negative light on marriage. Healthy nuclear families are the heart of a healthy society and when entertainment continues to attack that it only adds to the destruction of our society.

  • Enjoyed immensely

I was in the high school production of My Fair Lady. I had chills watching this production. Very happy with the experience.

  • The show was a professional production.

by Cam on 2/10/23Columbia County Performing Arts Center - EvansRating: 5 out of 5

Although my wife and I enjoyed the performance, there was absolutely no reason to have the drag queen scene in the play to promote an ungodly life style. This was not in the original Broadway performance.

  • Disappointing

by HeaSo on 2/9/23Old National Events Plaza - EvansvilleRating: 1 out of 5

We were very disappointed with the show, the characters did not grab you and engage you in the production. The sound was misery and we struggled to hear the whole time and the static from the mics off and on throughout were very frustrating.
