My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Wonderful moment

Enjoyed the evening very much. Costumes, lights, sound and stage design were beautiful. Impossible stop humming the song and the lyrics. Cast was very nice and the spirits of Ms. Hepburn and Mr. Rex will be always around that piece. Thank you!

  • It was ok

The performance of the main character (critical to the production) of Eliza (Madeline Powell ) was poor as it relates to her articulation, speech, acting from the beginning to end of the show. Often unintelligible unless she was singing. Her singing voice was good. Articulation lessons did not help. The rest of the cast, orchestra was very good. Could say, this production was only as good as its weakest link. She was a weak link. Unfortunately, My Fair Lady was not good fare!!

  • Just ok

It was really hard to understand the cast with the accents they used in acting. Low energy. Freddy carried the show.

  • Pretty terrible production

by Jmel on 4/9/23The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

The performance was one of the worst shows I've seen. Very disappointed. Lead actors are just not good for a combination of overacting and underacting, bad diction and lackluster singing.

  • Too many changes

by Singerky on 3/22/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The venue ushers and box office were wonderful. They helped me move from a very uncomfortable seat to one that was much better with good sight lines. The musical play itself was somewhat disappointing. There were many changes to make things "politically correct". The charcter portrayals were "some good some bad". Higgins was like a cross between a robot and Dudley Dooright (sp). And he delivered his lines so fast that it seemed he had an appointment to get to. Eliza was enjoyable and her transition from cockney to a lady was good to see. But having to play against a stiff, one dimensional Higgins made it difficult to catch any growing relationship between the two. I was offended at the hint that Col. Pickering was gay. This was implied during his telephone conversation with his old friend Brewster Budgins. Mrs. Pearce's accent was troubling. Would Higgins have tolerated the head of his household speaking the way she did? I think not. Alfred P. Doolittle was enjoyable to watch and captured his character. Mrs. Higgins, Henry's mother was spot on. Freddy Einsford (sp) Hill also did a good job. Zolton Karpathy also did well in his short appearance, but I did have some difficulty understanding him as well. The singing was very good, the ensemble numbers (songs and choreography) were excellent. The sets, set changes, and staging were top notch. Overall, we were glad we went, but weren't overwhelmed. Lexington audiences give everyone standing O's. In this case, it wasn't deserved. The company deserved warm and appreciative applause, but this perfomance was so uneven as to be like a good community theater or college/university.

  • Exceptional

Wonderful overall. Excellent talent and voice. The orchestra was excellent as well.

  • Not the classic show

by Disappointed on 3/22/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 1 out of 5

Most performers were wonderful. The actor portrayed Professor Higgins was over the top, trying to hard. He needs to relax. But the biggest disappointment was putting a drag queen into the “I’m Getting Married In The Morning” dance number. It was at times vulgar. I wouldn’t see this production again, even for free.

  • Beautiful performance

by Mimi on 3/22/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

As a huge fan of the film starring Audrey Hepburn, this cast definitely met and exceeded my expectations. I grew up listening to the soundtrack on 8-track in my father's car. I highly recommend this performance for the lovers of the movie and soundtrack.

  • The ten minutes that spoiled three hours

    by Pastor_Anthony on 3/21/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The acting and singing were excellent and appreciated. Initially the play stayed true to the book and movie of My Fair Lady during the first half of the show. Then with the opening of the second act my children were exposed to more bad language, which is not only inappropriate but unnecessary, and then a full on drag show. With men dressed scantily as women flaunting their wares and a woman dressed as a man. I can only imagine it was an ill-advised attempt to be culturally relevant, that only ended up alienating the audience. Particularlly in a state that just the week before had passed anti-drag show legislation. Poor timing or poor writing? Bottom line, NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY.

  • Really fun show

  • LOVED IT!!

by JJinKY on 3/21/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

We had not seen the movie before, even though we love old movies & Audrey Hepburn. We watch the movie a few nights later & it didn’t hold a candle to the play! Honestly, the play was amazing! The performers did amazing with their characters. Some even with multi characters & changes. It was a well performed, well put together show!

  • Review of Lexington's My Fair Lady

by Fan Favorite on 3/21/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Lexington Opera House has no bad seats! The people, ushers, everyone are welcoming. The ticket master was very cumbersome and was even down multiple times the day of the event so this held up actually getting into the theatre. The cast's voices were outstanding! and the Orchestra was unbelievable. Two of us actually went down to see if they had recordings of music. These muscians played their hearts out. As I said, the singing was outstanding, the speaking parts were either weak or the mics didn't pick up well. The set changes and the stage were incredible. The library, where most of the play takes place is marvelous and so well done. The two weakest characters for me were Eliza and the Professor. They did okay but they overplayed their parts. The professor marched and marched up and down the stage, was so stiff and because he was so young he came off as looking as a "Sheldon" character as opposed to a "professor". His lines were spot on; he did great... his singing was incredible... he just made such a show of his pacing it detracted from his performance. Eliza... well, again, for me, she tried so hard to enunciate every single letter - especially the constanents in her singing that her words got smashed up. "those slippers" would come out as "those shlippers" for example; and "just you wait..." as "jusht shuuu whait". So, if you look back at this point in the show, Eliza would have been transformed into "the lady"... she could show her anger but whether or not she falls back to her "lowly, old speech pattern" could be this Eliza's interpretation, I guess. Still, her singing and enunciation just didn't work for me. The plus side... she hit every line, every time, in the right moments. SO GLAD I went! wouldn't have missed it for anything and have recommended it to many people! Thank you Lexington Opera House!

  • Great fun!

by Tom on 3/21/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Best play I’ve seen at the Opera House in a long long time! Sets were good, all the actors fit their characters that I remember from the Broadway play and the movie. If the person playing Elisa was the understudy, it’s hard to believe the regular person could be any better. Worth every penny.

  • Phenomenal

by EB on 3/21/23Lexington Opera House - LexingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This show was phenomenal! I loved watching every minute of the show. I especially enjoyed watching the lead who had such poise, brilliant execution of her role, and the vocals were perfect! Per the program, the lead was played by Torinae. I also enjoyed the rest of the cast. Everyone had such wonderful talent. I also loved looking at the beautiful set and costumes. The show was serious and funny all at the right times. Bravo!

The singing and costuming was fabulous. The first part of the show was very hard to understand what the actors said. Fortunately the story is well known so even without understanding the lines you could follow along.
