My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Beautiful venue

by Plucky on 4/23/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Came from Ohio to Maine to visit my gal. We took Downeaster to Boston. Performance and acting excellent. Vocal acoustics were muffled and music at times very shrill. Did improve by 2-3nd act but still shrill. Closing scene made no sense. Eliza’s singing voice lovely to listen to. Sets and costumes well done! Biggest annoyance - I didn’t come to see rewriting with transgender scenes. Come on! It’s a clsssic OR let audience know before hand and vote with our pocket books.

  • A little disappointing

by Mom on 4/23/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

It was difficult to hear clearly what was being said when performers used a high range voice. I felt the performance was a little rushed.

  • beautiful voices

by kmj on 4/21/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This has always been a favorite of mine. I love the music and I think the cast did a wonderful job. My only issue is it was just a bit too long. I was getting restless about 20 to 30 min before it was over. Otherwise a lovely production

  • Good show but needs a little help

by Ella on 4/21/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

The singing voices were very good. The sets and costumes beautiful. The sound was pretty poorly done especially in the opening scene which was just noise. The group scenes at the racetrack and the ball were pleasant but lacked the crisp synchronicity i wanted. There was no romantic chemistry between Henry and Eliza so the ending left me confused. I'm glad I saw it but was left wanting more.

  • Underwhelming & Movie-like

by cw on 4/20/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 2 out of 5

The music was mostly prerecorded, the script made it feel like we were watching the movie. We would have had a better view if we had just watched the movie at home.

The sound was not good in the beginning. We were up front in the Loge seats and couldn’t hear the dialogue very well. Probably the worst play I have seen here

  • My Fair Lady April 16 evening performance

by JT on 4/19/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

My Fair Lady is a great musical and the performers brought energy and professionalism to the event. The Cockney accent is an important element to the musical but at times the lines were not understandable, particularly with certain female performers. With that said, it was a most enjoyable evening.

  • Go see My Fair Lady! We loved it and recommend it.

by BostonTheatergoer on 4/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Saw it in Boston for opening night at the Opera house. It exceeded our expectations (which is rare.) The two leads and Mr. Doolittle were really good. All actors/singers were impressive. Orchestra sounded great and all was in sync. Loved the scenery and costumes. There was even a live string quartet playing in the lobby as you entered the show and went upstairs. Our only criticism would be the sound. The sound had too much reverb and it was sometimes hard to understand what the actors were saying. Still loved it though!

  • What??

by Calli on 4/18/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 2 out of 5

Not sure what was said the first 10-15 minutes, and throughout the entire show at times. Between the dialogue, actors rushing lines, low volume microphones and people talking behind us (for the entire show) I am not sure what was said or sung. The lead actress had a great singing voice. The costumes were beautiful. Full stage use lighting was very dim. Letting the crowd bring in drinks has led to even more distractions and mid-show potty breaks. I really wanted my money back because I overpaid for this experience.

  • Familiarity Doesn't Breed Contempt

    by J. B. on 4/17/23The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

No contempt was bred by the production of My Fair Lady at the National Theater. Not by the theme of George Bernard Shaw's original work that serves as the basis for the show, which has been proven to continue to be relevant. Not by the performances which one might perceive as being either familiar or unoriginal. And not by the details of the staging which created an immersive experience of mood and environment. Audiences often desire a somehow new and original perspective of a classic, but I was chuffed to enjoy what was in many ways a recreation of the 1964 film. For most of us that is our introduction to this work and in so many ways explains why we love the story. It's often refreshing to experience an updated or modernized version of a classic, but maybe what many of us really need right now is to be more securely anchored in what makes us feel a bit safe and comfortable. Such an effective recreation of the past can be as much of an artistic achievement as any newly-informed perspective as viewed through some fleetingly modern lens. The sound quality in the National Theater could be improved. With regard to this production, better sound quality could make the strong, working-class English accents of many of the characters more easily heard and understood, especially to an American audience.

The music was wonderful but it was difficult to understand many of the words spoken. Personally, hated the change in the ending. Went to see My Fair Lady, not a rewrite.

  • Loved music

Could not understand all of dialog. Staging was magnificent as were the costumes. Tickets were too pricey. Did not appreciate the trans gender dancing.

  • Average at best

by Rapidsrider on 4/15/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 3 out of 5

We were mostly disappointed with this touring production of My Fair Lady. The audio was terrible making most of the dialogue garbled for our seats in the Mezzanine. (While departing after the show, we heard similar comments from several people sitting on the main floor.). Our experience caused us to re-evaluate purchase of Broadway Theatre Guild tickets for next season and decide against purchase. The actor playing Higgins often spoke too fast further contributing to our difficulty understanding dialogue. And the actress playing Eliza Doolittle often seemed to be screaming and at the high register she too could sometimes not be understood. Costumes were wonderful. Choreography was excellent as was the blocking and movement in such scenes as the one showing passage of time following Eliza’s arrival in Higgins’ home. Alfred P. Doolittle was very good, probably the best actor in the show in our opinion.

  • Amazing!!!

by Alliandre on 4/15/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the part of Mr. Doolittle, Eliza and the entire show was amazing!!!

  • The singing and the dancing were outstanding

by Aline on 4/14/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 3 out of 5

It was obvious a great deal of time was taken to make sure the accents and dialects were authentic; however, the actors were very difficult to understand, particularly at the beginning of the show. I struggled, but could understand. During intermission I heard several people complaining rather loudly they couldn't understand a word that was being said. I realize authentication is important, but performing for the audience would be preferable. When I saw this as a child, I could understand everything.

  • A little disappointing

by McLean Mom on 4/11/23The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

One of my favorite musicals and in a great venue. Unfortunately, the leads (Eliza Doolittle and Professor Higgins) were mediocre and had no chemistry with each other. On the positive side, the supporting cast was excellent, especially Pickering, Freddie, Mrs Pearce and Mr Doolittle. In fact, they were so strong that the flat performances by the leads stood out even more. Beautiful set and lovely costumes (with the exception of Eliza’s ballgown — who puts a redhead in orangey-red?? Green would have been so much better!!) and of course delightful music and lyrics.

  • Fabulous

by Dashed on 4/11/23The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The cast, production, music and sets were excellent and impressive. The quality of the performances and voices was superb. The whole experience was delightful and uplifting.

  • Pretty good for a touring company

by Mikorff on 4/11/23The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

For a touring company, the performance was top-notch. With minimal stage sets, the company pulled off an entertaining production. Kudos to the ensemble for an enjoyable experience. I thought Eliza’s cockney was overly aggressive, but the others seemed totally believable. The orchestra and the actors were in total sync, making it a seemless experience. There were a few times when the backdrop stirred, perhaps while another set was being prepared, and that detracted from the overall performance, but that may be inevitable with a small stage and a touring company. All-in-all, it was an enjoyable experience, 60 years after I first saw the stage version.

  • Okay

by JK on 4/11/23The National Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Although we all enjoy the story line and music for MyFair Lady, our group was not thrilled with the performances of the 2 leads playing Eliza and Henry. We didn’t care for their vocal quality or their musical and acting choices. We did like tge performances Colonel Pickering and Mrs. Higgins and Freddy. Sets and costumes and dancing were all just fair.

  • Nice but Drag Show not needed

Generally a great performance but the drag show was so out of place and left a bad impression.
