My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Dumbing down the theatre experience

by Sally on 4/28/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

First of all, I find that ushers bringing in 10 to 15 people AFTER the Overture has played and the show has begun, is appalling. The late people should have to wait in the back and should have no impact on those of us who actually managed to come EARLY. Second, there was a man who was eating very loudly for at least 20 minutes. Louder than those who eat popcorn in movie theatres or baseball stadiums. WHY is this allowed at all?! Third, I had to gather four people to come to the show, to make it even close to affordable. "Eliza" was over the top and poorly directed. "Higgins" was too young for the role and too effeminate. He was also one dimensional. "Mrs. Pierce" reminded me of someone out of a horror film. "Alfred DoLittle" was just plain boring. The show was miscast and poorly directed. To read in the bio that the stage director is the resident director at Lincoln Center completely blew my mind. The costumes and sets were boring. Especially the races and the ball scene. The ball scene screamed for a staircase. Not a door opening that looked like it was borrowed from the set of "Lost in Space".....Eliza's ball gown was orange. And ugly. Eliza came through an "exterior door" at the end of the show, then exited downstage right, which had NEVER been used as an entrance or exit to anywhere. Just. WHY? The orchestra and ensemble were outstanding. But those two components didn't justify all the money we spent. And "Get Me to the Church On Time" was way too long. Especially for a 3 hour show.

  • Just OK

by HR on 4/28/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

The opera house is beautiful. Getting in with your ticket worked well and the house was quite full. We were sitting in the dress circle and had a great view of the stage. It’s always exciting to be at a live show. Unfortunately, there were a few problems with the production. The voices were beautiful, but the miking made the words garbled and the orchestra sound distorted. The cast acting and dancing were great but the two leads seemed stiff and uncomfortable in their parts. it was a pleasant evening at the theater. I’ve always loved the musical My Fair Lady. The songs are so familiar and beautiful, but I was disappointed.

  • Amazing!

by Kim F on 4/28/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Oh my GOODNESS! We saw the My Fair Lady touring production at Citizens Bank Opera House and it was INCREDIBLE! Such a magical performance. -the set, the costumes and the CAST! Just phenomenal. The actor who played Henry Higgins was outstanding. And the young woman who played Eliza Doolittle MADE THE SHOW! The entire experience at the Opera House was fantastic- what a beautiful theater, efficient and friendly staff. We could not have been more thrilled with the entire thing!

  • Just Awful

by Librarylizzie on 4/27/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

My daughter and I saw MFL in Boston on 4/23/23. We left after the first act. The actress playing Eliza Doolittle was beyond terrible. She had some sort of speech defect or lisp with certain words and even while singing. Her "accent" was ridiculous, as were many others'. The only actors we enjoyed were the ones playing Alfred P. Doolittle and Mrs. Pierce. Verses were left out of songs. Various lyrics were emphasized where they needn't be. We were so completely disappointed. We've seen a number of shows in Boston. This was a complete disappointment.

  • Mediocre

by Mark3750 on 4/26/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

To be honest, this production was disappointing. It was saved by the actors in the more minor roles and the ability the cast to be able to sing. It is my belief that this company needs a better voice coach. I could not understand a word uttered by Eliza, until Henry had worked his magic, but, imagine my surprise, to find that my English wife couldn’t either! Henry over acted and his accent was very forced. Henry’s Mother and Eliza’s Father were the superior cast members. I actually feel that I wasted $400 to attend this show, and that has never happened before, no matter where I have chosen to go to the theatre - The West End, Broadway or provincial theatres, including amateur companies.

  • Great....except.....

by PTM on 4/26/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Loved every aspect of the show EXCEPT when the "Get Me To the Church" drag scene had to played out!!!! This is a FAMILY SHOW-not a strip show!.... I wanted to come back again because I loved the score and sat 5 rows from the stage, but I won't because of one distasteful scene!

  • Still the strawberries and cream of the crop!

by Greg M. on 4/26/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I recently saw “My Fair Lady” at the Citizens Bank Opera House in Boston. I hadn’t seen it professionally performed since its 20th anniversary revival in 1976. It remains fresh and true to G.B. Shaw’s witty story. It is blessed with a score that dazzles from the very first notes of the overture. IMHO, it is just about the best score ever composed for British-American musical theater. “The Rain in Spain” and transition to “I Could Have Danced All Night” will move even the most jaded theater denizen. If you’re not cheering Eliza’s triumph in those moments, it’s possible “you’ve no bleedin’ heart.” The touring company cast was very strong throughout. The current production has minor cuts (no busker dancing, a few other dance sequences seemed somewhat shortened, and there were edits to “I’m An Ordinary Man” and maybe to “A Hymn to Him.”) None of those detracted from the play, and appear to recognize that 2:55 running time with intermission is about as long as can be asked of a contemporary audience. The costuming is perfect. I have seen some audience reviews that criticize a twist at the end of the play that varies from earlier productions and the Audrey Hepburn/Marni Nixon & Rex Harrison movie classic. Without providing a spoiler, I think the twist works, and if one looks at speculation in reviews dating back to the play’s initial run in the 1950s, people wondered then what the future would hold for Eliza, Henry, and Freddy. I also don’t share the concern a few recent audience reviews raise that some of the performers in “Get Me to the Church” are in drag. It’s a bit of campy fun, and if anything, it reenforces the point that Alfie P. Doolittle is no slave to “middle class morality.” Certainly, nothing I saw would suggest to me that the play is any less family friendly. In the performance I saw, the only minor hiccup I noticed was that near the end of a couple scenes, a scrim would shift several inches before the scene actually ended. Maybe a stagehand had a couple extra cups of coffee! Whatever your age, if you love musical theater, My Fair Lady is not to be missed, and the current touring company production is absolutely “Loverly.”

  • Tremendous assistance within the Opera House.

by Quinta on 4/26/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

My Fair Lady a true classic from Lerner and Loewe was a spectacular performance settings, actors and the orchestra a true masterpiece in Boston! Parking nearly at entrance to the Opera House.

  • Fabulous production with very impressive talent.

by Kim F on 4/26/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Chemistry between leads very obvious Vocal talent and charisma so enjoyable. Shortage of bathrooms makes for hectic intermission

  • It was amazing

The parking, the show, the theatre…everything was perfect!!

  • Wonderful to revisit my favorite show.

by Bruce on 4/26/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I have had good fortune to have seen My Fair Lady when it first opened on Broadway with Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews, and Stanley Holloway. The young peformers in this production (from the Mid West) must have used Henry Higgins phonetic training to perfect their English dialects quite well. The singing and dance numbers were outstanding. I was disappointed in the sound engineering which amplified the actors dialogue and singing excessively, particularly in the opening scene.

  • Very disappointing

by Janet on 4/25/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

Took my 98 year old Aunt and we were so unhappy with this performance. Could NOT understand a word Eliza and other members spoke, her cockney accent was HORRIBLE so we spent the entire play with heads tilted reading a caption screen with the dialog at the front of the stage??? The drag queens in the wedding segment were appalling and beyond unnecessary and distasteful. I kept thinking Lerner and Loewe are rolling over in their graves and to top off the disappointment then they decided to change the ending. I guess this director needed his own glory rather than to just portray a magical play as written. Save your money.

  • Incomprehensible Dialogue

by Incomprehensible Dialogue on 4/25/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Great music and wonderful voices. However, the casts attempt to use a cockney accent ruined most if the show. Upon departing the theater I asked an usher if the problems with dialogue were just my own…her reply was how she had seen the show 5 times and could still not understand a word.

  • Very mediocre

by Dick on 4/25/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

Give me a show like My Fair Lady, South Pacific, or a West Side Story and I run to buy tickets. Little did I know that Row S was in the back of the theater where I had a hard time seeing and hearing the actors because of the distance and the large blonde head of hair right in front of me. My wife had a similar issue. The parking was prepaid but when I couldn’t find it in my phone in the garage, they made me pay an additional $22 before exiting the garage. The show was o.k, from the long distance we. watched it. But it will be a long time before we will return.

  • A bit disappointing

by JJ on 4/25/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

I take no joy in giving a bad review. However, given the level of ticket prices, expectations are accordingly high. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met. The performance felt flat from the start. The sound system was poor, often making it hard to understand what the actors were saying (and not because of the accents). There was little chemistry between the lead actors and the lines performed often felt rote. The drag show in the night before the wedding scene was odd and out of place. Note: I have no issue with this, but it just felt forced and a bit in your face. Whatever. Much of this seemed to be reflected in the audience's applause at the end (yes, I stayed for the whole show), which were polite but not all that enthusiastic. I did hear some people saying on the way out that they loved it. I was happy for them as at least they got their money's worth. Looking forward to our next show and hoping to leave a much better review.

  • Wonderful show

My Fair Lady was wonderful, the singing amazing. I’m so happy that I had this lovely afternoon with my daughter and granddaughter

  • Brutal

by MQ on 4/25/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

The actress playing Eliza Doolittle ruined it! Way overdid the accent to the point of not understanding her at all. Even after she learned to talk properly in the play.. absolute mockery of the character. Everyone else in the play was great. Her performance ruined it all

  • Excellent show but...

by gjdmas on 4/25/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

The show was good and it was a special gift to my wife

  • Very talented, exceptional actors, and actresses.

by TC on 4/24/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

I truly admired the talent of the actors and actresses involved. The stage production was terrific, the scenery was terrific. One thing, however, is that the plate was longer than it should have been. Several of the songs could have been cut, shorter by possibly 1/3. Again, the art and talent of the actors and actresses, as well as the production people was outstanding.

  • Disappointed

by Cin on 4/24/23Citizens Bank Opera House - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

The whole show was disappointing - the choreography, the actors, staging, acoustics. Couldn’t understand what the actors were saying during all of the first third of the show. We did enjoy the orchestra however.
