My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

Got tickets for my 45th birthday and it was worth every penny!! The costumes, sets, transitions, music and actors (especially the actors!)--all of it was fantastic!! My husband equally loved it and kept saying he enjoyed how it completely immersed the viewer into the storyline. We were also completely enamored with the performance! Definitely a must see!! (We rank it up their with Wicked!)

  • Magical

The set pieces for the travelling show were phenomenal. There was an excellent use of forced perspective used regularly that added great depth to the Majestic's small stage. Do not use ParkWhiz under any circumstance, though.

  • See it again!

by Epp1 on 9/28/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The show, the cast, the MUSIC was a delight! After being in lockdown for a year and 1/2 I thought just getting out of the house would be nice. Never did I realize what an impact this outing would have in my life. I could have danced all night! Loved loved loved the music, they never missed a beat. There is something special and magical seeing a live stage production but when it's performed to perfection it carries you away to new heights! Don't miss it if it's coming to a city near you!

  • Loved the play. Wonderful acting/singing, thoroughly enjoyed

by MrsC on 9/27/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The only downside was we were given instructions in an email to arrive 1 hour early and had to wait in the crowded lobby for about 45 min. I don’t understand why we couldn’t enter the theater & take our seats as soon as we got there.

  • My Fair Lady on Tour in San Antonio

by Rick G in OK on 9/27/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The Majestic Theatre in San Antonio is a beautiful and historical facility; but there were problems in managing the crowd. We were instructed to arrive one hour before showtime although patrons would not be allowed seating in the auditorium until 30 minutes prior to the performance. This resulted in a number of people uncomfortably packed into a very small lobby, although masks were required. (So much for social distancing!) The actors and the orchestra were superb and the scene changes were imaginative and smoothly done. However, in the play, were two instances of modern leftist thought, anachronistically inserted that I did not care for. This is why I could not give it 5 stars.

  • Excellent Show!

I saw My Fair Lady on Wednesday night. The lines to enter the theater were long and slow, but otherwise the show went very well. The Majestic is a beautiful theater and every seat offers a good view.

  • Outstanding

What a fantastic show. The sets were gorgeous and the acting and singing were awesome. A great production

  • Great performance

by J.C. on 9/25/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The play was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed it. But, telling people to arrive one hour early at 6:30 and then not opening the doors until 7:00 was ridiculous. This was very difficult for anyone with difficulty standing for long periods of time. It was stressed that masks would be required but definitely was not enforced. A couple came in and sat in front of us without wearing masks from the beginning and at intermission it was a free for all.

  • Would have been fantastic if no PC additions

by Elisa Fan on 9/25/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

The talent was fantastic. All of the leads had amazing voices. The comedic timing and acting was also on point! However, there were 2 politically correct additions that took you out of the experience, was inauthentic to the historical timeline, and brought in politics! It was so disappointing to have pro-life advocates scream when walking off the stage and the addition of men dressed like women in the “Take me to the Church in Time” scene. Leave politics out of a classic and I could have rated it much higher!

  • Spectacular

by Nina on 9/25/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

The show was spectacular. We drive 4 hours to attend and it was well worth it. Enjoyed it very much.
