My Fair Lady on Tour
With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.
Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.
The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.
About My Fair Lady the Musical
Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.
In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.
The set, the singing - a very put together production my family enjoyed!
From easy parking at the Dolby theatre to great access into the theater it was terrific. So impressed with the seating arrangements and stage it was a perfect night! We sat right above the orchestra seat and below mezzanine. I would purchase this location again! The play was one of the best we’ve been to. Wish it was playing longer so friends and family could see it.
The Dolby theater was one of the best theaters we have ever attended, great seats (my wife being in a wheelchair were great seats) the play was EXCELLENT, the scenery looked so real and the actor was great. The screening process for Covid and ticketing made it quick and easy to enter the theater.
Dolby did a great job with checking ID, vac cards, tickets, directions and bar tending
I love this musical for so many reasons so I was anxious to see this production. Inside the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the musical is lavish, well-sung, well-acted, with wonderful, movable sets. I was with it all the way...until the final moment of the play when the ending was inexplicably CHANGED from the original. Why oh why did the Lincoln Center production go there? It's not a criticism of the cast or the production but of the creators who thought they could do something better and more modern with a musical that has already stood the test of time. It didn't work for me or my husband...at all...
The amazing experienced cast put on this classic. Julie and Audrey would be very proud!
The set was fantastic, the acting and singing were fabulous. The process of getting in the theater was seamless from the security check to the vaccine check. I saw no one in the theater without a mask on so, awesome to see everyone complying and keeping each other as safe as possible.
The audience sat on their hands during the show, and then gave a standing "0" at the end. Strange. There were built in pauses where the cast was used to laughs or applause. Neither came and many awkward pauses, but they soldiered on. And then everyone stood up. Strange.
We were told to arrive at least an hour prior to curtain time so that there would be enough time for covid and ID checks, as well as bringing up our tickets on my iphone. We did so and the check in time was all of 5 minutes if that. So now we were in the lobby but couldn’t go into the auditorium to our seats for about 25 minutes. To make matters worse, there was very limited seating in the lobby. We were lucky to squeeze into some bench seats across from the bathrooms, but as time went on more and more people had to stand. The theater needs to provide more seating in the lobby area.
Our first time back in a theater—8 of us ranged from 6yrs to 75years! Such fun to be back to theater and My Fair Lady was a wonderful event! Terrific cast! The process getting in—was much easier than we all expected…very organized..and amazingly quick. Well done! Thank you! Clean, helpful & friendly staff, and all wore mask!
Loved this My Fair Lady I’ve seen lots of them and this one was one my favorites Great singer!
I love the old musicals where you know the story and all the words to the songs. Great cast, all very talented. My only criticism was of Eliza’s cockney accent. I’m British, I went with 3 American friends and they were the ones that voiced that opinion before I said anything. She did have a great singing voice though.
A classic show at the iconic Dolby Theatre that is a MUST SEE! The incredible leads gave world-class performances, and the dynamic ensemble was entertaining, with a standout baritone voice. "Get me to the Church on Time" was energetic, fun, silly, and it seemed that the cast had as much fun performing as the audience enjoyed watching them. Theater is back, and it is magnificent!
Great show with a fantastic cast in a great space. The whole family loved it.
The play is fantastic. We enjoyed the performance and music.
Eliza Doolittle's performance by Shereen Ahmed, an Egyptian-American goddess, was hypnotic. Laird Mackintosh's execution, as Professor Henry Higgins, was flawless. Colonel Pickering's character, Kevin Pariseau, couldn't have been casted better. Spotless production. Spectacular play. Well worth the wait.
I loved the show, everything was excellent except one thing. They felt the need to add something that was not part of the original movie. They had men dressed as women dancing and doing sexual movements. One performer stuck his breasts in a man’s face. It looked like a drag performance and it was completely inappropriate for young viewers. I am so glad I didn’t take my children. It was disappointing that they felt the need to add that to the show. I thought I was going to see a wholesome play and they ruined it for me.
What a wonderful show. The actors, costumes and of course the music…all perfect!
While the show itself was great, the seats were uncomfortable, the lines for the restrooms were impossible, and the lines for drinks/snacks were extreme. Given this, during the 3hr production we were unable to go to the restroom, or get anything to eat or drink.
Broadway lavel singing and acting...extremely entertaining. The sets were well done and unique.
