My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

My Fair Lady in San Antonio

by D. P. on 9/25/21Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

The production of My Fair Lady at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio was wonderful! It was well produced with outstanding acting, singing, choreography, set design and orchestral accompaniment. I have seen several productions of My Fair Lady over the years, and this was the best. The Majestic Theatre also did a good job of holding a show with COVID safety protocols, we were relieved that masks were required at all times. I would gladly see this show again.

My daughter and I really enjoyed My Fair Lady. The music was wonderful and the acting superb. The story was easy to follow and there were even a few surprises.

    Boring, old fashioned.

by FC on 9/22/21Hobby Center - Houston

It lasted 3 hours. The musical plot is not for that length. Too much dialogues. Not very suitable for not native speakers (strong British accent, slangs and jokes). Not much dance. The end is very poor scenery talking. The performers are great.

    My Fair Lady

by Patron on 9/22/21Hobby Center - Houston

The show was amazing but I cannot come back to any show as long as you are becoming a dictatorship and forcing people to have a vaccine in order to see a show. As long as that policy is in place I will never see another show with you again.

    Fantastic with one sad exception.

by Justin on 9/21/21Hobby Center - Houston

I love the arts! I loved the acting, the singing, the props. It was so beautifully done. However, there were two scenes where a political agenda was brought front-stage, deviating from the movie plot. I would be more understanding had it enhanced the story, but it was anachronistic and irrelevant to the story. That made it really stand out and feel like it was an attempt to offend half the crowd. Otherwise, it was beautiful, but I can’t remember it fondly without recalling these scenes as well.

The performance was fantastic, but the Hobby Center was not.

by Debbie on 9/21/21Hobby Center - Houston

The Hobby Center promised to take Covid precautions. They lied! At the entrance an ungloved employee will put the bare hands into my purse for a search. Then you will enter a crowded reception area where unmasked people not distanced from you were eating and drinking. Then when seated, not distance precautions were required, it was crowded seating as usual! People took off their mask to SING! No action were taken to prevent it. I paid 125.00 for this experience and had a partially obstructed view. The performance was amazing. Hobby Center could not have been worse!

We enjoyed watching the show and felt safe. We appreciated the ushers enforcing the safety and mask protocols. The only negative were the people in front of us who talked through most of the performance.

The Best My Fair Lady Ever!

by Keny on 9/20/21Hobby Center - Houston

Being older, I grew up with My Fair Lady as one of the iconic productions of the generation. Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison were etched with love on our hearts. So when we went to see the Broadway Touring Production in Houston, it was as much with a sense of nostalgia and love of the score as with the expectation of a quality show. Little did we know the experience that awaited us. This production is more expansive than the film and more than many of its other stage productions. Magnificent sets, captivating costumes, and added scenes that are delightful and funny. “Get Me To The Church On Time” is a show stopper. But the star of the evening was Shereen Ahmed who electrified the theatre with her portrayal of Eliza Doolittle. She is a beautiful and talented actress but her singing is breathtaking. I don’t know when I’ve heard such a strong, controlled, and melodic voice. Her chemistry with Laird Mackintosh, who is brilliant as Professor Higgins, is the solid foundation of this amazing show. Days later it is still resonating in my heart.

Absolutely beautiful performance, the singing was amazing.

The price for gallery tickets is extremely over priced, we could barely see the actors we were seated so high but the music and singing was marvelous.

Our family of 5 had a wonderful time at the opening of My Fair Lady in Columbus, Ohio. Initially the sound was a bit off and we couldn’t hear Eliza clearly, but it was quickly adjusted and the rest of the evening was wonderful. Great cast! Excellent in every way!

    My Excellent Lady

by Ollie on 3/11/20Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Having seen this show many times since the 1960s, this production comes closest to the gold standard of the Rex Harrison - Julie Andrews era. Spectacular sets, wonderful lighting and award-worthy costumes. Shereen Ahmed's voice is a national treasure. These actors and technicians have set a new benchmark.
