My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Blown Away

by Rach on 12/6/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Growing up, My Fair Lady (movie) was a generational family favorite. In high school theater I would audition for musicals using songs from this play. So when I saw that I could finally see a live production I couldn’t throw money at it fast enough. I was worried there was no way the play could reach my expectations, but I was so vblown away. The entire cast was magnificent and so very talented.

  • My Fair Lady was absolutely Loverly!

by Dmilroy on 12/6/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

We are three theater lovers and we attended MFL with great expectations...since we know the show by heart! It did not disappoint! The sets, music and singing were wonderful!! Can't wait to see more shows like this! Thank you Broadway SD!!!!

  • Wow, this is dated

by Diana on 12/6/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

I understand the show takes place in 1912 and it's been around a long time. Would have hoped for the occasional modern referance or updated comic relief. Rather slow. Singers were great, not fantastics. Not a good show for kids.

  • Good But Not Great

by SavannaIce on 12/6/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Costumes, sets and set changes, lead female singer, balance of cast is first rate. Unfortunately, the lead male is weak with very little singing ability and a wooden performance. With a stronger lead male this would have been an outstanding production. We can only wish for the improvement.

The theater was well prepared for this evening, felt save. The play was great. So fascinated by the moving set and customs. The performances were super and the voices wonderful. The whole cast was engaging and fun to watch. Had to bite my tongue not to sing along. Live theater at its best.

  • Instantly a favorite! Would watch again! (A Thorough Review)

by Rachel on 12/5/21Rating: 5 out of 5

I'm 23 and I was completely entertained. I sat in center orchestra, 8 rows from the stage. It was beautiful! The sets, oh my gosh were amazing. You will ooo and ahh at Professor Higgin's house. The transitions between scenes were clever. The lighting was gorgeous. And the surround sound effects were a nice touch. Eliza's voice is beautiful, as good as Julie Andrews, even at times I would say better. Seriously impressive. Very angelic and with great control. Freddie's voice was show-stopping. I got chills when he reached his high notes. A true talent. He also gives a humorous performance during his solo. Higgins was absolutely hilarious! The audience was laughing throughout the entire performance. It was also heartwarming to watch Higgins' reaction to Eliza during The Rain In Spain, when she walked in the room before the ball, when she danced with another man, when she throws his ring, and when he sees her again. I personally felt the romance. Pickering is also charming and the best Pickering I've seen. He did an amazing, amusing, and touching job. AND ELIZA'S DAD! Ha! The end of his number had the audience roaring. Excellent casting. Excellent orchestration. Excellent show. I enjoyed it so much I bought 8 more center orchestra tickets to share for family and friends to experience. A MUST see. And a new favorite. .... Advice .... The show is 98% verbatim to the movie with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. I recommend NOT watching the movie before you see the performance, because the jokes are more enjoyable when you don't know they're coming. Go check out the orchestra pit. Pretty fascinating to watch the musicians during intermission, before the show, or after. .... Cons ..... The only things that weren't great was the volume of the microphones at first. Even being that close to the stage, it was hard to hear at times. Some background actors were louder than the main ones. It did get better though. So maybe you won't have that problem, might have just been a venue thing/tech issue. The intermission is short so don't wander too far or the show will start without you. I saw a lot of people rushing back to their seats once the second act was already going. Bummer! Even while in the best seats in the orchestra, I sat around people that were unfortunately on their phones recording/taking photos of the performance with their bright screens, and loudly talking to each other. Please do not be those people.

  • Fabulous

This cast and orchestra were spectacular. Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle did Julie Andrews proud. Wow — wow!

  • Play was lovely. Music terrific Acoustics at the SD Civic TE

by Judy on 12/5/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I won’t return to the Civic theatre until The acoustics have been upgraded. We had expensive seats in the orchestra and I was reminded how poorly the acoustics are in the theater. We went to another show before the pandemic and have the same problem. It’s really a shame, excellent venue a terrible sound. Please let the civic know about their problem.

  • Great Performance But…..

by NotACritic on 12/5/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

First I’d like to say the performance itself was fantastic! The gal playing Eliza was phenomenal. What keeps it from five stars was the parking and the acoustics. I purchased on-site parking through Ticketmaster and the garage was not set up to except the barcode. Had to sit in a line for a ridiculous amount of time because they had to manually write down the ticket information for every single person. The other issue was the acoustics of where my seat was. My seat was under the mezzanine and it must have dampened some of the sound because it made it challenging to hear the dialogue. Other than those two issues, absolutely enjoyed the show.

  • A Magical night!

by Scott Alan Zimmer on 12/5/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

First off, the Production was first rate. Each and every Actor poured their heart And soul into their character and performance. The audience was truly mesmerized by their professionalism.

  • by Genie on 12/4/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This was by far the best presentation of My Fair Lady I have ever seen. The voices were fantastic, the way you manage the stage is state of the art and the ball scene where the dancers are in monochromatic coloring was elegant and spectacular at the same time. If they ever come back I will see it again but I will get a closer seat.

  • Excellent performance

by Ray on 12/4/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

The music was fantastic, the sets were extraordinary, the cast was exceptional and the Civic Theater did an excellent job with security and audience protection in light of Covid worries.

  • My Fair Lady

by Playgoers on 12/3/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

The voices, the acting, the sets were magnificent. The lead actors were the characters. They moved me deeply. The acting was awesome. The sets were so professional. We were very impressed. The whole play was so well done, I can’t think of a thing of which to be critical. Just beautiful from beginning to end. A lovely outing.

  • Enunciation Fail

by Captain Bill on 12/3/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

The actor's job is to tell the story of the play to the audience. Proper enunciation is essential for the audience to have any idea of what the actor is saying or singing during a production. Some of the lead actors/singers in this production were difficult to understand while others spoke clearly. How ironic for a play about speaking proper English.

  • Amazing

by Allegra on 11/4/21Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The quality of voices and direction well exceeded my expectations. I took my mom here for her birthday and we both were smiling and excited the whole time. Every detail was seen to, and the voices were amazing. Thank you to all who made this happen, behind and in front of the curtains.

  • A Classic Done Right

Great performances, clever set design, fantastic orchestral accompaniment--all brought much luster to this production of a Broadway classic.

  • My Fair Lady - Dolby Theatre

    by Liv 45 on 11/3/21Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The performance was wonderful! The stage settings were also wonderful. The actual theatre is beautiful. People wore their masks inside and once in the theatre, everything went smoothly. Recommend that you arrive at least an hour early to find parking (especially if you don't like underground parking), park your car and go through security, etc. Traffic is usually heavy near the theatre, and area in general, is very touristy and crowded.

  • Super cute - great venue!

by Wine lover on 11/3/21Dolby Theatre - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

My Fair Lady is one of my favorite shows, and this production did not disappoint. From actors, to costumes, to sets, this was a delightful show. The talent was phenomenal, and the theater is wonderful. The Dolby is both large and cozy, with mostly stadium seating which allowed us to clearly see the stage without fear of anyone blocking. The process to get through security and into the theater was smooth and quick. My daughters and I had a great time.

  • It was hilarious!
