My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • A good show

by Dr. Who on 12/13/21ASU Gammage - TempeRating: 3 out of 5

Sets, casting, acting, costuming and music were top notch. In many ways a very good performance. The cross-dressing weakened the overall show as it was not funny or clever, it was just crude.

  • Amazing!!

What an amazing show! We did not realize how much we had missed musical theatre through the pandemic, until we saw this show. Truly a great Holiday experience for us.

  • Loverly

This was one of the best stage productions of My Fair Lady that I have seen, the lead singers voices were great and easily heard, the costumes and stage sets were outstanding, there seemed to be a real spirit of camaraderie among the performers. They seemed to enjoy performing it as much as we enjoyed experiencing the performance!

What a beautiful enjoyable time my friend and I had! This production was absolutely magnificent from the actors, the scenery/props, the music, the songs and definitely last but not least the costumes. This play was beyond enjoyable and lovely from start to finish

  • It’s always a great experience

by Starfish on 12/9/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Firstly we really enjoyed the show. I love a good play. Every actor/actress did a wonderful job. The singing was so good and it was hard not to sing along. The costumes were beautiful and perfect. Secondly I would like to give a shout out to the sweet lady/concierge (?) that helped us with seating. We had a difficult trying to get tickets for handicap accessible when ordering online which seems to be the only option. The tickets we purchased were for front row mezzanine. The stairs would have been a bit much for mom and the sweet lady assisted us with seats that didn’t require us to take any stairs. She confirmed with management that it would be ok. She really went the extra mile to help us and I was so grateful.

  • This is not My Fair Lady!

by Tim H on 12/8/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 1 out of 5

If you have fond memories of a romantic, magical, musical, then this is not for you. Think women suffragettes marching, transvestite middle aged men in tutus and white Jockey shorts dancing, a young age-appropriate Dr. Higgins rather than a gentleman mentor, and an ending where Eliza tells Higgins to flake off. They've lost the soul of the play in the interest of political correctness. That said- good singing and beautiful sets. But it's not My Fair Lady!

  • Terrific Ensemble!!

by DebW on 12/8/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter and I completely enjoyed the matinee on Dec 4. The entire cast did an amazing job, and the actress that portrayed Eliza Doolittle was beyond perfect. Her voice is absolutely amazing! We both hope to see her again in other musicals.

  • Very tight production.

by Keypoke on 12/8/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Everything about this production is first class - acting, singing voices, costumes, and sets. It looked like an-in house production, not a road show. The beauty and complexity of the sets and costumes reinforced the sense of historical accuracy.

  • Almost completely excellent

by Mb on 12/8/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

The timeless treasured story was wonderful to see. The singing and acting was exceptional. However, why would you veer from the time period of the 1920’s to present a transvestite bride? The producer ruined the scene! Leave your political preferences elsewhere.

  • It’s so Good!

  • performance great; Ticketmaster difficult

by LMB on 12/7/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

My Fair Lady was terrific. ACE Parking is highway robbery. They charge way too much and do not have adequate staffing. Took way to long to check in and pay for our car. Result: had to find our seats in the dark. Had trouble using Ticketmaster (maybe because I'm 81) but finally did it. That experience will cause me to avoid buying tickets to the Civic Center if I must go thru Ticketmaster.

  • Outstanding staging

by Farrell J on 12/7/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a very well staged and tightly run production. A real treat.

Over the years this is probobly the 10th time we have seen "My Fair Lady". What a wonderful experience it was to see it again at the beautiful Civic Theatre . The acting , the Music touches your heart. We had the signers in front of us and they are so very much a part of the production.

  • Great experience

by Kcstott on 12/7/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful performance, perfect props, great choreography. Unbelievably perfect performance. It was easy to get lost in the story and feel as if you are apart of the performance.

  • Fantastic voices

They have great voices specially the male lead..💖💖

  • Boring and didnt live up to the hype.

by M.night.shamalamadingdong on 12/7/21San Diego Civic Theatre - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

I was in turns bored and frustrated. The main characters, Eliza and Henry had no playful chemistry, back and forth. The actor playing Henry came in super hot and mean from the first moment onstage and Eliza's responses were so milk toast that it just felt mean and abusive from the start. And while, yes, it is not a love story netween the two, there was no dynamism in thise interactions that have us any reason to believe they should be friends at the end. It was constant yelling and vitriole from start to finish. He was so repugnant that i spent the entire play hating him. While there are some super fun classic songs, this play is a bit outdated and this production does not live up to the hype.

  • Worth the wait!

Cast and sets were fabulous! I sang along with all the songs as I grew up seeing this play often with my parents. Definitely a must see.
