My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Wonderful Show!

by SOB on 1/9/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

My Fair Lady was a great show - great performers, great staging, great costuming, etc. but the venue - not so much. First we're told to arrive 1 hour early only to find out the doors don't open until 30 minutes before showtime. The restroom situation is woefully inadequate and the information on parking is incomplete for new visitors. The show was great, but I'll not attend a show at Centennial Hall again.

by Val on 1/9/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the performance, however my seat loction was poor and I could barely make out the cast. I purchased a mezzanine seat, was to far away from stage.

  • Beautiful Revival

by Nan on 1/9/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful performances, beautiful sets, stunning costumes. Would have given it 5 stars except for the ending, which was not true to the original.

  • Superbly done!

The amazing energy was overwhelmingly delightful. Smooth sailing with set changes and loved the action with the revolving stage.

  • Moved to Tears

    by Cometcat1 on 1/9/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

The singing, oratory, acting, dancing, choreography, orchestral arrangements, sets, lighting, comedic timing and stage ambiance were all exemplary and worthy of and in many cases, exceeding expectations of a “Broadway in Tucson” performance. The sets were amazing in construction and detail. Set changes between scenes were performed smoothly and effortlessly and appeared choreographed as if part of the dance routines. Many scene changes were actually part of the choreography as the singers/dancers flitted from room to room inside the two-story house or outside along different parts of a neighborhood. One favorite scene was “Get Me to the Church,” a fast-moving, dynamic event with a blur of activity and complicated dance routines that drew the loudest applause. Another was the Racetrack scene that was performed so perfectly snobbishly upper class, comically aloof and over-the-top disdainful of any emotion save bored tolerance that I had to stifle laughter with tears until they exploded at the ultimate moment when Eliza’s facade evaporated and her true roots were shockingly exposed. Lighting was great and with creative use of different transparent, translucent and opaque materials produced some mind-boggling effects. Overall a memorable event that was more creative, spectacular, dynamic and stirred more emotional response than the movie. Thank you, Briadway!

  • Awesome

by Kat on 1/9/22Centennial Hall - TucsonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show. Amazing talent......Concern ....Most people wearing masks in audience. Concern...One young lady ..tall and slim....sat in Mezzonine section E corner and had mask off most of time. I believe her male friend worked for theater. She left with him afterwards. Safety concerns with mask rules.

The acting, singing,,scenery, costumes were all beautiful

  • Performances, orchestra and sets are wonderful... but sound?

by ahealey on 1/5/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

This is a wonderful tour. All performances are top notch, the orchestra is full and lovely and the sets quite creative - and the costumes! Oh my, beautiful costumes. The transitions between scenes keep the show flowing in a way few musicals do. For those who love the movie, you will feel in familiar territory. And the this interpretation has modern touches that keep the setting relevant (and actually more realistic). My only frustration was some of the sound. When sitting far off center (we were ROW K farthest LEFT seats) it was sometimes hard to hear the vocals.

  • Very well casted

    by Likes8s on 1/5/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Delightful and excellent voices. Very well casted. Sat in row MF2 GG which was not really good. My former season seats were MF2 Row E, aisle and I could see expression and it was so much more enjoyable. I would recommend good binoculars in he future.

  • wonderful musical performance in a beautiful setting

by VJ on 1/5/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Great cast with excellent singing voices as well as accents expertly accompanied by a live orchestra. Very, very creative set design kept the action nonstop. We would return to the setting to see the same performance when it returns and bring more family members.

  • Night out with grandson

  • First-rate Musical

by travelwitheric on 1/5/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve seen Broadway musicals in NYC, Vegas, and London, and this was among the best shows I’ve seen. Great staging and sets, gorgeous costumes, and extraordinarily talented cast. I don’t remember the last time I left the theater feeling so elated.

  • Love the original ending.

by dsonoqua on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the Rex Harrison/Audry Hepburn movie right up until the ending that squashed the story. I wanted to see this production as written, with NY cast and top-notch production. Shaw got it right. Every bit of the acting and staging was just excellent

  • My Fair Lady

by Vic on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic! I can’t think of any performances I’ve ever seen that have been better. All of the actors were amazing, with a special shout out to the actor playing Alfred Doolittle - spot on! I could have sat through it again right then!

  • Best Ever

by Lynn on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Definitely the best production we've seen at the Paramount, from the cast, performance, sets and singing. Wonderful!

  • My Fair Lady was wonderful!

by Sheila on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

The check-in was easy, and the staff was friendly and helpful. And the play was great! The music is timeless, and brought back fond memories. The costumes, the choreography, and most of all the cast, were spot on. My two granddaughters, 12 and 10, were captivated by the play.

  • Fantastic Production!

by Paul on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

My Fair Lady at the Paramount was a phenomenal experience. The actors were beyond amazing. Eliza and Professor Higgins were some of the best I have ever seen. Alfie was also perfect for the part. The staging was simply brilliant and added to the seamless production. What a great experience.

  • Dull, despite fine actors

by BuffaloCurls on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 2 out of 5

I really wanted to love this show, but I found it dull. The storyline, like all popular Broadway shows, is known beforehand. But I couldn’t help but wish it was over from the beginning. Paramount theater: don’t let people into the theater after the opening lines. Crowds of people were interfering with my sight lines throughout the whole performance. I don’t know that I would go to a play here again if that’s the way this theater is managed.

  • Disappointing

by KiteKitty on 1/4/22Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 2 out of 5

I love this musical, and had I not known exactly what was happening, I would have been as lost as my guests were. We could not understand the spoken words. Seems the cast thought it was more important to sound “cockney” (read:unintelligible) than to be understood by the audience as they told a story. Horrible! Eliza was the worst. I understand actual Cockney just fine. She was simply yowling. Her singing voice was terrific and her songs had good diction. Why not her dialog even after she speaks proper English? I was heartbroken for my guests, for whom this was a rather expensive Christmas present. This has turned them off musicals for some time to come. Me, I came home and watched the movie.
