My Fair Lady on Tour
With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.
Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.
The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.
About My Fair Lady the Musical
Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.
In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.
Loved every minute of production! Absolutely amazing lead actress and cast!
I could see some of what was said, but not all. Partly due to rapid line delivery, but still couldnt see all.
The sound didn’t seem quite right at the very start. Hard to understand the actors. The spotlights wobbled at the start but got better or were used less often. Mrs. Higgins’s accent came and went and she wasn’t very convincing early on. It was sometimes hard to tell between Prof. Higgins and Col. Pickering who was speaking. Similar voices and clothing sometimes and/or no gestures to help. I could have done without the sexuality in the I’m getting Married in the Morning scene—youngsters in the audience, too. Otherwise, that scene was awesome as was the racetrack scene. The ending needed some explaining-words or action. Did the actress just quit the play or …? Voices I most enjoyed: Eliza, Eddie, and Alfred. I LOVED the movement of the cast and sets throughout the performance. It added to the story and the enchantment of the experience. Generally, we’ll done. Thanks for bringing this show to Tucson.
It was so entertaining seeing "My Fair Lady" at Centennial Hall. The cast was great, especially the actor who played Henry Higgins. The live orchestra was excellent and I enjoyed hearing all the wonderful songs in this production. I would definitely recommend this show to my friends and family.
The cast, orchestra, stage sets, etc., were superb, and captivating making one want to sing along with the lyrics. Between the music, humor, and costumes, it was easy to get mesmerized by the production. We definitely would recommend attending future performances.
This was my first time at Centennial Hall. The quality of the production was as good as any I've seen on Broadway. The voices, the costumes, and the set design were all top notch! We were so happy they were making sure everyone that attended showed proof of vaccination and wore a mask. We will definitely return for other shows!
We were thrilled to attend the show in person. The kids were spell bound. I’m so glad we got to go!
Great production of My Fair Lady. You attempted to be very responsible regarding COVID-check of vaccinations and masks. The problem was the woman next to me drank her glass of wine without a mask for over twenty minutes. She also consumed snacks sold by the theater. You need to get a handle on this. No wine or beer or snacks inside theater!
I was seated close to the stage far left. The acoustics were very bad. There was too much shouting from the actors, I assume so they could be heard in the back. Please return Broadway to the Tucson Convention Music Hall. My Fair Lady stage sets were spectacular as was the dancing and costumes. The songs were mostly lost due to poor sound.
The production quality was excellent, sets were beautiful, actors were clear heard and had great singing voices. A top quality show!
The singing, sets, costumes, and orchestra were all perfect! Other that the open caption not working the entire time the performance was memorizing. Highly recommended.
The show was delayed over 1 hour due to technical difficulties with the set that were "explained", but not understandable. The lead actors were unimpressive. Elizza was mechanical and never caught on with the audience. She lacked personality. Henry was manic in his overly rapid speech, unnecessary shouting and almost constant movement. Rex Harrison, where are you.
Absolutely wonderful! The entire cast was top notch & the costumes were BEAUTIFUL!!!!
The show started an hour and a half late. The stage manager kept promising "it'll only be ten more minutes." Once the performance did start the entire cast really felt like they were just trying to get through the show. It was so disappointing that we left at intermission.
There was an hour delay to the start of the performance. They said part of the set was not working and they were trying to fix it. When they finally started the show they said they were not going to use that part of the stage. Some people left before the start of the show and we ended up leaving halfway through as it would have ended past midnight had we stayed for the whole performance. The stage actors were good but it was hard for us to recover from the delay which I am sure skewed our thoughts on the show.
In the past we have thought the sound was not great, but it was very good for this performance so we have already bought tockets for another play soon.
The production was absolutely wonderful. The music, the costumes, the cast were awesome. The best production of My Fair Lady that I have seen. It was truly a moving experience.
My mom and I really enjoyed the show. It’s too bad the venue did have valet parking for those that really needed it. The venue was also cold.
We enjoyed the play My Fair Lady, one of the best performances we have even seen. Set was perfect, performers excellent, play was always in motion, and the actors really seemed to enjoy what they do. Great old hall. Wish there were more restrooms.
Very amazing performers and on target to entertain their audience.
