My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Excellent - Timeless

Had watche4d the movie 40 years back, around 1977. This production is everything you would want from a Broadway or off Broadway classic. The performances, the orchestra, music, ensemble are all flawless. One issue that reduces to 4 star. At about 3 hours with intermission, it is at least 20 minutes too long. The extra length just not add to any substance. Other than that, more than worth the money and time,

Just a warming, heart-felt and up-lifting show - just when a bit of perfection is needed in this world! Henry Higgins had just the perfect touch of pompousness, and Colonel Pickering was a DASHING sucess! Eliza Doolittle proved that everyone has a touch of class if only given a chance. The acting and character development of Higgins & Doolittle was as good as it gets, and both gave very satisfying performances. The set was AH MAZE ZING, the costumes were AH MAZE ZING, and a BRILLIANT shout-out to the show-stealing performance that was ASCOT GAVOTTE! A few things were lacking - Freddy Eynsford-Hill was a lack-luster performance, and I did not care for Eliza's father's singing voice (but who am I), but I haven't enjoyed a Musical Production this much since The Greatest Showman!

by Jess on 3/2/22Rochester Auditorium Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter and I love the theatre, and have missed it tremendously. This is our first “official” show since before COVID, and it was such a great show to come back to! The performers were outstanding, the costumes and set beautiful, the singing powerful, and the venue as welcoming and comfortable as always. We highly recommend seeing My Fair Lady - it was absolutely wonderful!

  • Loverly.

by Susan on 3/2/22Rochester Auditorium Theatre - RochesterRating: 4 out of 5

I nearly fell out of my chair when the beautiful Shereen Ahmed came out before the ball, looking almost exactly like Audrey Hepburn. She was marvelous. It was a fun evening. That said, the production attempted to be too much like the original, providing little chance to reflect on the subtleties of the story. It’s a complex story with lots of layers. The only hint of variety was the slight suggestion of Pickering being homosexual. Not interesting nor pertinent to the narrative.

A great shw, Eliza was very good but lost some dialog as her voice faided.. missed a great punch line or two...H Higgens had a great voice and played a great part. The chorus was terriffic, a great bland of voices and harmony. Haven't been in the theater in several years , but it is a beautiful venue and a Gem of a facility for the arts...I hope in never leaves...

My 11 year old grand daughter is interested in choral music, so I brought her to My Fair Lady.......after watching the first half (which admittedly was a bit hard to understand) she was clapping enthusiastically for the show, the actors, and the story!@!!!!! SHE LOVED IT. and our row N orchestra seats were terrific and very affordable (matinee).

Overall the show was satisfactory but it seems that the cast most of them wanna be someplace else then on stage

  • Still a winner!

Fabulous show! Amazing singers & the set exceeded my expectations - just beautiful. The diversity in casting was impressive. I do wish the show was just a little shorter or that it started at 7:30 instead of 8:00 given the 3 hour running time. We had 3 generations attend - teenager, mom & grandma and we all thought it was great!

  • Loved it!

This musical was fantastic from all angles -- talent, costuming, set. My daughter and I loved it! It's context is dated, but it continues to be an entertaining story.

My wife and I cannot stress how incredible My Fair Lady was! The scenery, the way it was moved and used was astonishing to say the least. The cast members were top notch and the gentleman that played Elisa's father, well his voice took our breaths away. To date the RTBL has not disappointed us in any way. Keep up the great work. We plan on becoming season ticket holders for next years' venue!

  • Loverly

A wonderful performance of one of my favorite musicals of all time. The cast, especially Shereen Ahmed were “loverly” and I was so “bloomin” impressed with the set and orchestra. Please please please go see this if you can, it’s expensive but so worth it.

The sets were amazing, as were the actors. The lighting was a huge contribution to the scenes. The orchestra was superb. Everything was easy to hear. All in all, a great spectacle.
