My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Great… but the ending…

by Westie-Mom on 5/11/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

Great quality production, excellent performers, beautiful voices. But I wasn’t aware they had changed the ending… why mess with a classic? I was pretty disappointed… well, five days later I am still upset about it.

  • FANTASTIC SHOW

One of the best shows I have seen in a long time! Congratulations to the cast and crew on a spectacular performance. I could’ve danced all night!!!

  • Don't miss it!

I've been a fan of the movie for years but have never had a chance to see the show live. It was wonderful. The script was almost identical to the film and the cast did a great job. The set design was also really cool to see and makes great use of the small space of the stage. Don't miss this show if it plays near you.

  • Enjoyable Show

A very nice production of My Fair Lady. The cast ensemble was very good with the four leads in the outstanding category. All had strong voices that carried well matched with wonderful choreography and stge sets. The live music section was a separate treat all in itself. I have found myself humming the tunes for days afterward. As for DPAC, it is, top to bottom, side to side, just a great venue serviced by very helpful and pleasant people.

  • A beautiful experience

by Amy on 5/10/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I love My Fair Lady. This production was beautifully performed (the woman who played Eliza was a stunning singer!) The dance numbers were so well done and compellingly fun. This production both honored the original while also adding some (much needed) 21st century tweaks. It was a wonderful experience all around.

  • Great show

by Good music lover!!! on 5/10/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This was my 2nd time seeing a play at DPAC. The first was The King & I and I was very impressed. My Fair Lady lived up to the expectations I had after seeing The King & I. The sets were beautiful, the songs were wonderful and the actors were the best! Each in their roles brought the beauty of the play to life. This was also a Christmas gift for my MIL, and she was just as impressed as I was. I will be back again when another play that I want to see come to DPAC!!

  • Superlative

by Jim on 5/10/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

The performance was superlative, entertaining in every way and leaving us with great memories of a well spent evening. The cast was perfect for the storyline, particularly Eliza and Professor Higgins. Having seen "My Fair Lady" several times over the years, including the original production on Broadway, the quality of this performance equaled any of those occasions.

  • The best My Fair Lady production ever!

by Nora on 3/9/22Shea's Performing Arts Center - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

Within the past month my husband and I have traveled 80 miles to come to Sheas to see Oklahoma and now My Fair Lady. Interestingly, Oklahoma was the worst production of any play we have ever seen and wondered what Sheas thought they were up to. But that’s not what you’re asking me to do here. The exact opposite was our experience with the wonderful production of My Fair Lady. The sets were outstanding and the actors’s costumes we’re exquisite. The singing was grand and the enthusiasm of the actors poured out into the audience. I will replace my trust in Sheas theater once again.
