My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • The show was wonderful!

by MonaLisa on 1/24/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Loved My Fair Lady. The orchestra, the cast, the sets were precise and beautiful! High praises! Hershey Theatre is a gorgeous old building. Ladies rooms need expanded please. Did not like trying to meet their 5x 8x1 inch handbag policy. Nearly impossible!

  • Disappointing

by Amanda on 1/24/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 1 out of 5

This performance was extremely disappointing and underwhelming. The actress performing as Eliza Dolittle was pitchy and at times, her performance was so exaggerated it appeared to be mocking individuals with disabilities. Her “cockney accent” was horrendous. If you are a fan of My Fair Lady, I do not recommend.

  • I was not impressed by the leading actors.

by Franciscan on 1/24/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

I felt the leading actors were just not rounded in personality. They simply were not believable. Henry's presentation was constantly staccato, and Ms Doolittle was in consistent. The Sound quality just wasn't good. It seem that when there were some funny lines, only one side of the theater could really hear it and responded. The other side, where we were, could not hear the line and did not respond.

  • Outstanding performance!

    by K. C. on 1/24/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

I might as well have been on Broadway! This was a professional, high-quality, outstanding performance. The singing was pitch perfect, even with the accents and emotion that went in to every song. The sets were amazing and set changes flawless. The dancers were excellent, the orchestra amazing, and costumes gorgeous! Never was there a lag in the action. I was totally engaged for the entire three hour performance. Well done! The Hershey Theater is beautiful, but next time I really will get there an hour early. The bathrooms are far away with a line a mile long! Sitting in the rear orchestra it was very noisy with latecomers waiting to find their seats in the dark. Closing the lobby doors would have been very helpful.

  • Wonderful

by Pb on 1/24/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

The play and actors were just great. Wonderful voices- particularly the actor performing “On the Street Where You Live”. Play made me think in a way I hadn’t as a younger woman . It is not a misogynistic play - rather a play about misogyny and overcoming. The ending differed from what I’d seen previously and in such a moving and perfect way - truly enjoyed the performance !

  • My Fair Lady

by Sparkle on 1/23/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show!!! Fabulous costuming, creative sets, beautiful singing voices!!! Very talented cast playing multiple roles. Hershey Theatre needs to upgrade their seats. Twice recently, I had a lumpy, uncomfortable seat!!

  • It was beautiful ~ loved the show.

Scenery music singing and actors were all fantastic.

  • Awesome experience

    by J on 1/23/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

The live orchestra was amazing and the harmonies were dead on. All of the songs were great as well. The costumes and set did an impeccable job at putting you into the time era of the play. Overall great experience. Only thing that can be improved was the sound of the actual acting scenes with the microphones being turned up on the main characters. If I hadn’t seen the movie before a few scenes would have been totally lost to me because I could barely hear what they said.

  • Broadway feel with amazing sets

by Barb S. from Hershey on 1/23/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

This was stupendous—singing and acting was great and the set design was extremely well done for almost an immersive experience.

  • Wonderful musical with superb music and dancing!

by Trish on 1/22/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

My Fair Lady moves very quickly with all the set changes and wardrobe changes. The musical performances were outstanding but the dancing was my favorite! Bravo to Eliza Doolittle and all the cast.

  • Not the best show I’ve ever seen

by Theatergoer on 1/22/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

This show was not the best show I have ever seen. There were some cast members who were very talented, but there were some including one of the stars of the show that needs some work. There were some changes made to the story, from the original script. I felt that was sad…

  • Sorry I went

    by Jim K on 1/22/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 1 out of 5

Leading Actor (Professor Higgins) was terrible. I could not understand a word he said for the first 20 minutes of the show and he did not get much better after that, My wife and I left after the first act.

  • Great

by Wow on 1/21/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

My Fair Lady was a great show of talent and excitement. Loved seeing the familiar story played out by todays brightest actors. Every actor pulled me into the story and we’re perfect for the various parts. Enjoyed everything about it

  • Good time

by Shari on 1/21/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

The play was well staged - the music was wonderful from the orchestra to the vocals. The woman who played Eliza has a wonderful singing voice and is very a very talented vocalist. While speaking with her Cockney accent she has trouble enunciating well enough to be understood. At times she sounds like she is inaudibly screeching. The actor who played the part of Dad Doolittle was incredibly good. The Take me to the church arrangement was a poor representation of the movie, and parts of it were wholly unnecessary. With all that being said, I am glad to have seen it.

  • A treat!

by Brick on 1/21/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Production values were superb. Sets were gorgeous. Actors were very talented and the musicians were great. A pleasant experience overall.

  • My Fail Lady

by Ginny on 1/21/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

It was wonderful. My only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because it was difficult to hear all the dialogue, because the actors spoke so quickly. I'm sure I missed a lot of the words because of the speed in which they were spoken. That may be only my problem, not theirs. Other than that, it was top notch!

  • Love My Fair Lady but…

by BY on 1/21/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

Have always loved this show. This one was good but not great. It was hard to hear what was being said at times. Speech was sometimes too fast, so enunciation could have been better. We were in the orchestra section so close enough we should have been able to hear better. Not just Eliza but Henry Higgins, also.

  • Night at the theatre with a classic

    by Chris V on 1/20/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Entering the Hershey Theater transforms you to another place.. The lobby is an amazing piece of artwork. Then you enter the even more fantasmic theater. The show was wonderful, A classic, the entertainers were all very well rehearsed and exuberant, all seemed to love that they were there to show off their wonderful Story.. Thank you

  • Too Long

by My Fair Lady Review on 1/20/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 2 out of 5

In beginning of the show the voice of Eliza Doolittle was so bad that I could not understand a word that she spoke. I understand the concept but it took away from the show - she could have been loud and slurred without the exaggerated speech issues. The show seemed to go on and on and on.....3 hours later the ending was bizarre. The one scene I enjoyed was Eliza's father's wedding day. It was lots of dancing and fun. I was offered discounted tickets for this show but even at that I would not recommend it unless you want something good to sleep to.
