My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • I was so excited to see My Fair Lady come to our theater!

by AngieB on 2/6/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 4 out of 5

I loved the play so much! I took my daughter, grand daughter and a friend. I knew we would love it because it has been my daughter and my favorite 'go to' movie. We've watched it many, many times and for years. My daughter even bought me the wide screen version DVD about 5 years ago. We have even bought Eliza barbie dolls in the past, when my daughter, who is now 35, was growing up at home. We loved the way the play was so much like the movie. We loved the actors and actresses chosen for the play. They did an outstanding job. I was very impressed with the singing, stage, and how the play moved from one scene to the next with such ease. I was however, disappointed in the ending, thus the 4 stars instead of 5. I wish Eliza wouldn't have left the stage. I don't understand why the ending didn't stay consistent to the movie.

  • Wonderful Show At A Wonderful Venue

Easy parking. Used a local lot in which you scan with your camera. Paid 7.89 for four hours then 50 yards to Six-18, a good restaurant, for a pre show dinner, then 50 more yards to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium. Show was great! Great actors, wonderful orchestra. Great time. Look forward for the next event in this locale.

  • Pretty good.

For some reason we could not get the bar code to appear on the e tickets. Maybe my connection had timed out. Ticket office gladly and helpfully looked our seats up and issued physical tickets.

Enjoyed the play very much. The venue was beautiful.

  • Music was timeless but they changed the ending.

Political correct wokeness strikes again. Eliza walks away from Henry Higgins in the end of this one. There are also suggestive references that the main male characters are gay. The rousing get me to the church number feature drag queen dancers. The people in back of us got up and walked out after that little number. Timeless music .

  • Wonderful show, Theater okay

by Sad teacher on 2/5/23Columbia County Performing Arts Center - EvansRating: 4 out of 5

The show itself was wonderful, I give the show 5 stars!!! However the Performing Arts theater was very uncomfortable and hot. The seats are not made for people that are plus size. It's sad how so many different places do not think about plus size people, all they care about is making money so they cram so many seats in.

  • Not Authentic

Unfortunately we were very disappointed in this production as it strayed from the original.

Very good revival of a Lerner and Loewe classic! We had great seats in the first row of the balcony. The music and singing was excellent. The speech audio where we were seated was not good at times. The other critique I have was the drag scene with Alfie Doolittle which I found to be inappropriate to add to the play. A revival of a classic play should be just that..a revival and not reinvent

We both like the hershey theatre & have enjoyed previous the performances we attended. However, we were extremely disappointed in my fair lady, as we were unable to understand most all of the speech & decided to leave during intermission.

  • Wonderful venue, great show!

by Beckster on 1/26/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

The show was wonderful! The Ascot scene, done to perfection! That is always one of my favorites! Loved the way Henry Higgins was played, Eliza, to me seemed a bit angry in her portrayal. In her first scene, I understood everything she said in her opening line, then for the next several lines, I could not understand a word. Other than that - fantastic!

  • Great production - not so great seats

    by MHD31 on 1/25/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

Loved the production, the music, the set design. However, for shows like this, do not sit in the balcony. The sound system does not support these seats, so we missed much of the dialogue.

The show was ok, but not great. In the beginning we couldn't understand Eliza because of her heavy cockney accent. It was too strong. Luckily we knew the storyline, so we could follow. In addition, the characters Eliza and Professor just didn't seem to click. I know the storyline has them at odds with each other, but they seemed almost too abusive. The best actor seemed to be Freddy. My biggest complaint was the "Get Me To The Church On Time" choreography. I couldn't believe it included a male actor sitting on top of a female actor with her legs spread wide open. It was way too suggestive and definitely uncalled for. Also, I don't know why there were 3 male actors dressed in drag during that song. Neither of these things were in the original production and unnecessary. This is supposed to be a family friendly production and I feel sorry for the families in the audience.

  • Mostly well-done, but also disappointing

by Fran on 1/25/23Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

We have seen "My Fair Lady" a number of times in a number of theaters and in many ways this compared favorably, but not in every way. The costumes in this performance were fantastic and the sets, especially of Professor Higgen's home, were wonderful. The leads performed very well in acting and in singing! The biggest disappointment, however, was the scene at the bar where Alfred Doolittle sings "I'm getting married in the morning." That was done in a very raunchy way with the "bar girls" and Doolittle. I was so offended by that, if I knew that were going to be done in the same way in the future, I would not attend the performance. That was entirely not needed and contrary to an otherwise sophisticated and family-oriented performance. I did see school-age children in attendance and am glad our son was not watching.

The show was outstanding in all dimensions. It was as well done as anything we've seen on Broadway.
