My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Not a good feeling

by Em on 1/19/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

The singing was fantastic, the dancing, sets were great. There was no chemistry or tension between the professor and Eliza, so the arguing, especially during the second act was grating. There was no rooting for anyone really because there was nothing to fight for. He was the villan the entire time, and there was no softening to him as there was in the movie. I left feeling rather depressed.

  • Love the Hippadrome!

by Crazymom on 1/18/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

My Mamma wanted to see My Fair Lady. We had amazing seats and the performance was fantastic!! No squeegee kids was an add plus and it was a wonderful afternoon. Honestly not sure I would do evening shows anymore until Baltimore crime gets under control. That said loved the performance in a beautiful historic theatre!

  • Love it

  • Date night

by John Smith on 1/18/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 2 out of 5

Acting and singing was great. I had a really hard time understanding he cockney accent. The biggest detractor was the very uncomfortable seats and the heat. Fixing the seats may be a bigger challenge but I don’t see why they could have lowered the temperature. I hope the HVAC was broken. Otherwise I will not be going to more shows as it really does take away from the performance. Just my two cents.

  • A mostly good experience

by Snakeman on 1/17/23Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

The sets were imaginative. The music was delightful. We could have done without the transdressing in the Doolittle wedding scene.

  • Loverly

I saw this on broadway over 60 years ago and this was a loverly rendition.

  • was nice

by monkey on 1/17/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

The sets were well done and the movement between scenes was smooth. The actors were good. Too many people walked in either after the show started or got up and left and returned or couldn't find their seat because the ushers were absent. The singing was too loud. Some of the accents were too exaggerated and made the lyrics not understandable in the group of ladies singing in the race scene.

  • Wonderful

I love the musical! The performers were so talented with beautiful voices. The story is so fun. It was a wondeful evening at the theater.

  • My grandaughter was captivated by the perfomance

by ECM on 1/16/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

The audience could be a liitle better dressed for the performance

  • Disappointed with the ending

by Ruth Anne on 1/16/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

I must be a purist. The ending was changed. Left me feeling confused. Why do that!! Sets were good. Best scene was the Ascot races. Excellent sound effects. Best casting was Eliza’s father.

  • Somewhat Disappointed

by Dave on 1/16/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

While the costumes, sets, and most performances were outstanding, I found it hard to understand all the dialogue, especially Eliza's Cockney accent. Also Higgins was hard to understand sometimes.

  • Acoustics not good, primary cast members weak

by TL on 1/16/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 1 out of 5

The ensemble was good. The leads did not have strong voices and misinterpreted certain interactions with one another that were not as portrayed in other performances. The lead female’s accent missed and she was impossible to understand. That was not the case with other performances of my fair lady. Disappointing

  • Tired Second Act

by CMac on 1/16/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

The production was on par with many different Broadway shows I’ve seen with regards to the first act. The ensemble cast was more than adequate to play the diverse characters in this musical but even their talent couldn’t pull off a tiresome sleepy second act. The actor portraying Professor Higgins was spot on, and kept this timely musical on pace, the lovely Eliza’s actress was superb as well as Colonel Pickering’s actor.

  • Repeated problems with the miking

by Dave on 1/15/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

At the beginning of multiple scenes, mics were not always turned on/up, therefore the beginning of the dialogue was not always audible.

  • Unfavorable.

by DSS on 1/15/23Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - BaltimoreRating: 2 out of 5

Love attending shows at the Hippodrome. This one was not one of the best. The cockney accents were overdone and with some actors almost impossible to understand. Fortunately our seats allowed us to see the “closed captions” screen. You could certainly tell the experienced actors from the less-experienced. I would not recommend this production to my friends.

  • Thrilling

by Starr Baby on 1/11/23Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

The show was excellent. The singing, acting, sets, costumes and orchestra ALL were amazing ! I know the score word for word and it was all I could do to hold myself back from bursting into song . I loved every minute ‼️

  • I could have danced all night

by Annie on 1/11/23Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

  • Good enough

by Plantvibe on 1/10/23Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 3 out of 5

Eliza was short and a red head,,, ok I was expecting at least someone similar to the advertisement. The sound was not clear or loud enough for some acts. Disappointed for the price.
