My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

  • Evansville My Fair Lady

by Jeff on 2/8/23Old National Events Plaza - EvansvilleRating: 3 out of 5

Singing was strong and good. Many complained including myself about not being able to understand the dialogue. I do not know if this was a problem with the auditorium or with the traveling sound mixing personnel. Costumes and set was really good.

The acoustics were less than acceptable. VERY hard to understand the dialogue. Thank God we knew the song lyrics.

  • Excellent Presentation - Suggested additions

The touring musical was excellent - Speaking, Singing, Orchestra Acoustics were very good and very well balanced. Refreshment options were excellent and appreciated. We would suggest 2 items for the auditorium: 1) Have a 5, 3 & 1 minute alert (Flashing lights) before performance starts and (10, 5, 3, 1) light alert at the end of intermission. 2) Because we sat near the back we couldn't help but notice: - Need to have door attendees to manage door (very loud distracting) sounds, and (very distracting) door lights on late arrivals and early departures. (Because of this we will not sit near the back nor attend an afternoon matinee again). However, overall great time and experience with marvelous touring and local performances and support staff.

We did not appreciate the changes to the show from the original story. Other than that it was very good. The sets were beautiful.

This show was fantastic. The casting was perfectly done. Everything from the set design, to the vocals, to the acting of the cast, was absolutely memorable. We could not stop grinning ear to ear after the show was over. Fantastic job!

  • Delightful evening

by Retired teacher on 2/7/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 4 out of 5

The performance (and the performers) was wonderful, engaging and funny. Great orquestra provided support for strong singers. The well-known story was presented from creative sets and moved along at a good pace. My only criticism is really just a caution to others who, like me, find it hard to follow the British accent. The interaction between the main characters kept me engaged throughout. The ending was powerful. Thoroughly enjoyed it all.

  • Wonderful

My Fair Lady was a delightful musical with gorgeous costumes… not the street scenes! The first half was a little long.

  • Almost amazing

by Julie on 2/7/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 4 out of 5

Mostly true to the play. Some actors were EXACTLY like the characters and it was so fun... until it wasn't. I LOVED it until the bar scene before Alfie's wedding. For some reason men were dressed in show girl costumes and a bride was in boxer shorts. It was confusing and ruined the entire scene.

  • My Fair Lady was a wonderful experience.

Great sets, costumes, acting and voices, sometimes hard to hear/understand ... and a bit too long.

  • My Frumpy Lady

by A classic on 2/7/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 3 out of 5

I immediately was disappointed in Eliza which just ruined the play for me. The men dressed as women, what a disrespect to a classic. The ending, which I woke up for was a appropriate feeling I had thru the whole play. I wanted to walk out. Sorry...

  • Ruined a classic

by Misroz on 2/7/23Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium - ChattanoogaRating: 1 out of 5

I loved My Fair Lady… as it used to be. They have taken a classic and ruined it by inserting a lewd drag show right in the middle of Get Me to the Church. Simulating sexual dances and men running around in skimpy dresses and corsets, it was an assault to the musical and to our eyes. There were young kids in the audience and no warning when we purchased tickets that they have taken a classic musical and debauched it so grotesquely and needlessly. Had I known, I would not have gone. Plus the ending is highly unsatisfactory. They gave it a “me-too” make over, which makes the ending very anti climatic. Instead of watching 2 people struggle the whole show- one to grow into herself, and the other to realize his need for a woman in his life- having Eliza just walk away at the end was disappointing and done in a confusing and dull way. It gave the play an abrupt and stupid ending.

  • You had me up till the end.

I loved the musical the cast was incredible. The ending was very disappointing because it deviated from the original. Would have loved a classic love story ending.
