Loved this production. The singing an dancing were phenomenal, while the storyline stayed interesting as well. Kudos to all those involved in presenting a spectacular production. I even loved the clothes, especially of the main character, Felicia. no wonder the costume designer was nominated for a Tony Award. One of the best productions i have ever seen!

    Powerful story and performance!

by Pete1974 on 4/8/14Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Musical theater is often best when dealing with societal issues. Memphis deals with race relationships in the 1950s, and while not nearly as taboo today as it was then, the writing and performance put us in that situation and did it with great effect. Good humor and great music, performed by exceptional individuals, who had me near tears at the end of the first act.

Memphis touring - all that and more!

by sunnybrook659 on 4/8/14Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

The story line was similar to the real DJ Dewey Phillips; the cast was wonderful and the music was great. The instrumental live band was a great back up to the voices of the fantastic cast. Good Job Memphis! I would go see this one again.

I loved the music and energy

by boloney on 4/6/14Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

I loved the musical "Memphis." I thought Joey Elrose's performance was quite memorable, as was most of the cast. The music played in my head the whole next day. The soundtrack has been downloaded to my library.

    Nostalgia With a Message

by Jesswa on 4/5/14Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Memphis tells the story of the early days of rock and r&b through the prism of race relations in the early 50s. This is not a jukebox musical but rather has original songs that fit both the story and the times. The cast is very talented and enthusiastic, set and lighting great, and sound fantastic. The story is both uplifting and heartbreaking. It's a perfect touring show relying on story and performance to create a memorable theatre experience. I missed it on Broadway and am glad I got to see it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this evening at the theatre. Casting was right on point. Vocals-incredible/Dancing- superb/Staging & Lighting-perfect. I must say our Akron's E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall is an exquisite venue for ANY production. This production was stellar.

    Memphis was outstanding

by Sjim on 3/29/14E.J. Thomas Hall - The University of Akron - Akron

The music, dancing and the story were great. Usually, musicals have a scanty story line, but this was a look back to the past with a credible story.

Memphis entertaining but no Broadway Blockbuster

by SeventiesChild1954 on 3/26/14Times Union Ctr Perf Arts Moran Theater - Jacksonville

I found Memphis to be very entertaining, but it won't stick out as one of the great Broadway Musicals. There is not much of a plot (think Hairspray moved from Baltimore to the deep south, same time frame, same racial themes) but there doesn't need to be. It is mostly a vehicle for the music and songs. I think it is about 95% music and 5% dialogue. Most musicals have at least one song that makes it as a popular song outside of the play ("Memory", "Tonight", "Oklahoma", and "I Could Have Danced All Night" come to mind), but so far not so with Memphis. Good lively music, very talented cast, but nothing about Memphis rises to the superlative.
