TURN UP THAT DIAL...  From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a hot new Broadway musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, MEMPHIS is about a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break. What a romp!

by fcdiva on 10/17/11The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

MEMPHIS is a wonderfully fun romp with amazing costumes, sets, dancing and of course singing. If you like rhythm & blues, gospel or early rock and roll you will love this energetic show. The story addresses serious issues of race and discrimination, but the joy of the music makes this a very uplifting experience.

    Broadway meets Beale St!

by Naviti on 10/16/11The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Those of us in the real Memphis, like our hero Huey, don't always have access to New York City. So, I would like to extend a huge Hockadoo Thank You to the touring cast of Memphis the Musical for blessing us with the first stop on the nation wide tour. What you'll find here is a beautiful combination of sounds from Chuck Berry, James Brown, The Temptations, and Jerry Lee Lewis, yet these legendary sounds are set to theatrical dance them that blends Broadway and Beale St. in ways I could never imagined possible. Felicia Boswell and Bryan Fenkart create beautiful music together, literally and figuratively. The supporting cast is equally "fantastical." (You'll see what I mean.) "Memphis Lives In Me" will make any Memphian weep with pride. And don't listen to the naysayers who insist Huey's character isn't realistic. Those of us in the South all know someone who speaks, acts, and has the naivete of the adorable Huey Calhoun. Where would music be without the wonderful R&B music of the Black Memphis community or without the brave White DJ's like Dewey Phillips (the real DJ on whom the character of Huey Calhoun is loosely based)? The only problem with this one is that it might consume your life! You'll want to go again and again! I am proud to say I saw the show on its first run of its first night at The Orpheum in Memphis. I will never forget it!

    Memphis needs more Memphis

by Vicklie on 10/16/11The Orpheum Theatre Memphis - Memphis

Over all, this was a good production, with a very impressive cast of actors and dancers. I was entertained. The Southern accents were a bit over acted, and didn't really capture the Memphis "vibe." In other words, as a life time Memphian, I'd say the characters sounded more like they were from North Carolina (and yes, the dialect is different). I think this happens a lot with actors that are not from this part of the country. But we get the point, and "bless their hearts" for trying. Also, while the band was certainly good, you have to remember that Memphis is a hotbed of talent and created the Memphis Sound. So...sorry, what I heard was totally NYC (which is not a bad thing. It's just NOT Memphis). There is a vibe to the music that came from here. Maybe if you'd used some Memphis musicians for your performances here, you would have been able to capture it. And yeah, they are educated, can read and write charts, and STILL play them with more feel and soul (The Memphis Sound).
