Caught the show at The Hershey Theater 3/24, evening show. Little problems with the Hi Stuff but def good enough to get a Live 5. Third show in two days. Show streamed for the most part without a hitch. Tech glitch held up about 5 minutes near the end. The troupe was outstanding. Allot of Talent on the Stage! SRO, Standing Ovations and an Incredible Evening! Definitely will go again!

My husband and I went to see this production at the Capital One Center at Tyson's Corner, VA in the Fall. It was so good. The cast is so talented. We loved it. I actually went back the next day for the matinee to see it again. We highly recommend it!

    Great Acting, Disappointing Ending

by ShoreMan on 3/20/24Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

The acting was really great, especially by Remember Jones who played Judas. The sound from the orchestra was great, but too loud as it overpowered the vocals. They seem to make some adjustments after a song or two, but not enough. My biggest complaint was how the production ended. In my opinion, it should have ended with the Resurrection and the title song which would have been joyful and uplifting. Instead, it ended with the crucifixion, a bit of a downer.

    Evening with grandchildren

by Grandmama on 3/19/24Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

I am a big fan of Jesus Christ Superstar since I saw the origional on Broadway in the 70's. I didn't enjoy this show as much as other productions I have seen in the past. The cast was very talented but the sound system used I had a hard time understanding some of the words being sung and I know words to the origional soundtrack by heart. My granddaughter also had a hard time with the words. A better sound system would have made this evening out more enjoyable.

From start to finish this show was exceptional! The orchestra and the vocalist were the stars of this show! I’m sad that it was for one night only….

This play was spectacular. The actors who played Jesus and Judas sang their faces off!!!! I loved the whole production. I wish it ran more than one night in Red Bank and I would advise anyone to go see it!

    Not what I expected

by Bway Fan on 3/19/24Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

First, I love Superstar and have seen a number of versions either on stage, screen or TV. Now this is community theater so expectations must be realistic but these tickets were expensive. My main criticism is that this was less the play than a musical review of the songs with some choreography to accompany them. It needed the acting of the play to enhance the music. Having the Jesus and Judas characters use a hand held microphone rather than head mics distracted from the entire show, especially since the chorus and other singers used them. These microphones stopped the actors/ singers from acting out the parts and fully expressing their characters’ emotions and their feelings. Secondly, the most important aspect of the music are the lyrics and lyrics his night the bands sound levels overpowered the singers losing the audience the ability to hear the important words of the story. The singers were absolutely capable of making the songs resonate and their range was great, especially with the Gethesame famous high notes which were hit with accuracy and power. The crew just should have tuned the sound of the band down to allow those powerful Tim Rice lyrics shine through. Remember Jones was the predominant reason for us to see this version and his voice was excellent but unfortunately he may have misinterpreted some of the songs or just didn’t effectively convey through his acting. His constant holding the wrong kind of microphone definitely caused him to lose expression. Overall the rest of the cast did a very admirable job and as community theater members go they were above expectations. The direction was lacking as there were plenty of opportunities for new and innovative directions this production could have taken without any real changes to the scenery or costumes. For instance sometimes the cast was too many characters were on stage and certain particular actors were on stage too much this being too distracting. I just think the director had so much freedom to play with and had very talented Jesus and Judas to playoff each other and just didn’t swing for the fences, this just hitting a single. Overall I would say that this was a 5.5 out of a 10.

    Very talented Group

by Baci on 3/19/24Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

While the people in this show were INSANELY talented in terms of musical range and singing, the director took too many liberties with the show. I did not understand why it was set in modern times when it's the story of christ. Some people were dressed in modern clothes while others were not. So if you are going to make that decision to modernize it, then do it 100%. Also, I understand putting your own spin on songs but the music Andrew Lloyd Weber wrote is perfect just as it is. Overly singing the songs, shouting into handheld microphones, riffing on classic numbers all just served to detract from the casts talent. It got so loud at certain points that my mother's apple watch went off saying it was a decibel level of 90. Also I recommend NOT getting first row mezzanine because you cannot see half the stage bc the seats are low and there is a wall in front of you. We had to get cushions to sit on and there were only 6 available in the entire theater. Lots of unhappy people in our row.
