About

Melissa Etheridge in Concert

For more than three decades, Melissa Etheridge has been one of folk-rock's most resonant voices, offering comfort and solace to listeners while also serving as a defiant beacon of hope. The Kansas-born Etheridge initially studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, dropping out to pursue her dreams while playing sets in Southern California's lesbian bars. Etheridge's 1988 self-titled debut—which she recorded in four days—went double-platinum and was hailed widely by critics for its stripped-down take on roots rock, which recalled fellow Midwesterner John Cougar Mellencamp while also channeling the passion of Janis Joplin. Its blues-tinged single "Bring Me Some Water" was nominated for the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy, one of 15 nominations she's received over the course of her career.

One of her two wins was in honor of "Come to My Window," a single from her fourth album ‘Yes I Am’ that was released after she came out of the closet in 1993. That jangly anthem for self-acceptance, and its stunning video starring Juliette Lewis, remains one of the 1990s' most beloved singles; in 2001 when she performed it at The Concert For New York City the audience happily filled in after a mic glitch left her inaudible, while in 2017 she celebrated Independence Day with a stirring performance fronting the famed orchestra The Boston Pops.

Etheridge's career has been a testament to tenacity and honesty, with her rich, raspy voice making her forthright lyrics land even more powerfully. The bluesy, sultry "Window" follow-up "I'm the Only One" peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100; her 2006 song "I Need to Wake Up," which accompanied the environmentally conscious film ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ became the first song from a documentary to win the Best Original Song Oscar, and in 2014 she launched ME Records, her own record label, through which she's released projects like her Stax Records salute ‘MEmphis Rock and Soul.’ On her forthcoming tour of the U.S. and Europe, Etheridge is celebrating the 25th anniversary of ‘Yes I Am’—and a career defined by a willingness to say "yes" to her artistic and personal desires.

    Melissa was good

by Nurse1966 on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

The Melissa Etheridge concert at Harrah's Casino in Tunica was good. She played without a band. She was funny and sort of confused as to where in the USA she was at the time. She though she was in Memphis Tn. She was in Mississippi. The songs were good and looked like everyone had a good time.

by Sunny444 on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

Melissa did not perform with a band. It was just her singing and playing various instruments. Wow, what a sound! She sounded so real, so LIVE. Her selection of songs was great. There was just so much talent on that stage.

    Melissa Etheridge still rocks!

by Mimi40 on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

Melissa's acoustic tour is great. She sounds perfect, even after all she's been through with her health. As usual, she encouraged audience participation. The venue was intimate enough that it felt like she was in my living room playing for me and a few friends.

    Melissa Etheridge was great.

by Marcialee on 7/17/09The Venue - Hammond

There is not a bad seat in the VENUE at the Horseshoe. It is easy to travel to and parking is free and we stopped at the buffet before the show. Everything was great. I am looking forward to seeing more shows at the Venue at Horsehoe in Hammond. Melissa Etheridge was on stage for over 2 hours and she was wonderful. All I can say is it was GREAT.

    ME rocks!

by RiverSky on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

I love Melissa Etheridge and this was my 3rd time to see her. Although I loved the show, the acoustics of the auditorium did not do her justice. I loved that she performed solo. It takes a real artist to pull that off. Overall, I loved the show!

    MELISSA: ALIVE AND RIGHTEOUS

by SOUTHERNSTEELMAN on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

MELISSA DID HER USUAL EXCELLENT SELF. SHE TRULY IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MUSICIANS TO SEE LIVE. I DON'T BELIEVE THE GIRL HAS IT IN HER TO DO ANYTHING BUT HER BEST. RARELY WILL YOU SEE AN ARTIST ENTERTAIN WITH SO LITTLE BACKING (HER, GUITAR, & PIANO). THE CAMEO COVER OF 'TAKE IT' WAS OVER THE TOP!!!!

    Melissa rocked Tunica

by Gromit61 on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

First time at Harrah's and first time at a Melissa Etheridge concert. Both were excellent, especially Melissa! Great rapport with the crowd and a great solo concert with a good mix of slower songs and finishing with really strong rock songs plus a couple of good covers. Will definitely see her again if she comes back to Mississippi (not Tennessee Melissa...)

    Live and Alone-simply amazing!

by SweetGeorgia on 7/17/09MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

2 hours of non-stop Melissa music...couldn't have asked for more. Motor City Sound Board was an excectional venue. It was certainly up close and personal. Melissa really connected to the crowd. Tributes to Michael Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett were inspiring. A totally wonderful concert that I hope returns soon. Melissa alone can't be beat. Loved it!

    Melissa was terrific

by EJS0307 on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

Melissa was terrific in this solo concert. Her voice was strong and true. This was a high energy concert in a relatively small venue which enabled Melissa to connect well with her audience. And speaking of the audience, there were many rude folks who talked through even the slow ballads. I don't get that.

    A Nite to Remember

by NebraskaNancy on 7/17/09Harrah's Casino Tunica Event Center - Tunica

The concert, Melissa, was FAN-TAS-TIC!!!! Melissa alone, her guitars and piano. WOW! I was a bit concerned of the glass panel that seperated the lower seats from the upper seats and since our seats were the first row of the upper section we had to look through this glass wall. I was a bit conerned figures would be distorted, but they were not. Still I would have preferred to not look thru the glass............ Will go see her again and again.
