  • Madame Butterfly, Opera Idaho

by bluebird62 on 2/21/18Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - BoiseRating: 4 out of 5

Very good production of opera. The orchestra was fabulous. Was disappointed in the Pinkerton, male lead. His voice was weak and his acting did not display the demeanor of a Naval officer. He was too casual. Sharpless was better singer and actor. Madame Butterfly was excellent with a clear and loud voice and great acting. The chorus sang beautifully and acting showed authentic Japanese demeanor. I liked the simple set to highlight the singing and the music rather than too much clutter on the stage. In the first act the music overpowered the singers, especially the naval captain. Second and third act the singers were more audible. Staging was excellent, especially with the little boy and Susuki. The minor male characters were excellent-marriage maker, uncle etc. The costumes were fabulous and very authentic.

  • Madame Butterfly was Riveting!

A fabulous performance that never lost my interest for a second! Showcasing great local talent as well; powerful; beautifully engaged all of the senses and hauntingly unforgettable.

  • Madame' Butterfly cast exceptional!

by FMDAdvocate on 2/19/18Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts - Moran Theater - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The cast of Madame' Butterfly were excellent. We enjoyed the performance very much. The Moran Theater in Jacksonville has a great sound system and the seats are very comfortable. Parking across the street from the theater for $15 was a great deal. We highly recommend and will go again.

  • Not Operatic Enough

by DangYankee on 2/19/18Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts - Moran Theater - JacksonvilleRating: 2 out of 5

The singing and vocals were spot on. My complaint was with the production-- sets, costumes, props, lighting, etc.... that aspect was on par with a really good high school production. However, the singing and the vocals were absolutely stunning, and the two leads are extremely talented.

  • Madame Butterfly was Beautiful!

Music, singing & performances were wonderful! Well done! Scenery was awesome, so beautiful yet simplistic. Lighting really made the difference. Clowes Hall is an Excellent venue with great acoustics. Thank you for saving me the drive to Bton.

Indiana University put on an amazing, high quality production of Madama Butterfly! However, I will also note that the audience was also the best I have been in, in years - the respect, quietness, and general etiquette was outstanding!

  • Madame Butterfly was beau-ti-ful

by Tmockabee on 11/14/16Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Madams Butterfly was on my aunt's bucket list. So it was a surprise birthday gift for her. We had the best seats in the house. This play was amazing. A true heartfelt, timeless tragedy. It was a "must see."

I have never seen an opera and this was a great first.

  • Ghastly

    by VisitorfromIndiana on 2/3/16F. M. Kirby Center - Wilkes-BarreRating: 1 out of 5

The cast was wooden (there was no acting involved), the costumes were anachronistic, ugly, and worn, the orchestra was less than mediocre, and the super/subtitles were totally uncoordinated. Clearly the operator had no clue as to what was being sung. As one who speaks Italian and is familiar with the opera, the experience was positively painful. Much too much money for such a miserable experience. "Un bel di" fell flat on its face, totally emotionless, zero thrill. We left before the third act began. Never again.

  • Outstanding Opera

    by sexyred10 on 2/1/16F. M. Kirby Center - Wilkes-BarreRating: 4 out of 5

I'm always surprised when I hear this area is offering a beautiful Opera such as Madama Butterfly, especially after seeing such lovely shows at the Met in NYC. The sound itself could not be appreciated although the cast tried their best. Costumes & sets were very minimal, not to mention, the "goof" who was doing translation & lighting was totally off!!! Half of the time translation was three or four screens behind & rest of the time COULD NOT SEE, because lighting was TOO bright to see screen!! We had orchestra seats & should have been able to appreciate the show, but if I did not know the story would have been lost!! Having such talented singers & the live music made it special. I guess going to the Kirby in Wilkes Barre is good if you don't want to take a trip to the City.

  • Madama Butterfly was outstanding.

by Joyfl1 on 10/21/15Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 5 out of 5

The directing, the orchestra, acting and singing were outstanding. Having been to many of the Metropolitan and New York City operas, I feel compelled to extend Congratulations on a performance well done! Mozart decided that his music had to have a long declaration of love between the two "soon to be lovers" but the length was dealt with by the two voices well, and there was total focus and total voice presentation in excellence. P.S. and...if .you missed this one, you should have been to Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. The presentation was outstanding! Don't be shy in trying the operas. If you have never been, the libretto is presented on screen in English. You will be entertained and uplifted, I guarantee it!

  • Madama Butterfly was good.

by winstonike on 10/19/15Uihlein Hall Marcus Center - MilwaukeeRating: 4 out of 5

I liked Madama Butterfly but thought the orchestra overpowered the singers. And even sitting in the middle of the orchestra seating, I could hardly hear the singers especially at the beginning. I also thought that Pinkerton and Butterfly had no chemistry. The musical interlude between Acts II and III was too long. It was getting late and I was getting anxious.

  • Opening Night of Butterfly

by ragtimelove on 11/30/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The show and music was awesome. Only one suggestion, long line for buying water during intermission.

  • Madam Butterfly was s beautiful performance.

Expert staging and elegant performance. The scenery was gorgeous.

  • Outstanding production!

by Anonymous on 11/26/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

The production was outstanding! Performers exemplified the characters -- and the audience could identify with them. We felt the agony for Butterfly and really didn't like Pinkerton.
