    Touching

by MrTJazz on 11/21/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

This was my first opera experience in Colorado and I was not necessarily expecting world-class quality. Sorry for the initial bias, that's the truth. To my great delight, not only did I find myself touched by the performances once, but many times. And this is coming from someone who is not a big fan of Opera. Madama Butterfly is one of those stories that the modern listener can actually relate to. This production held true to fine art yet with both great intensity and great warmth. Bravo to the Colorado Opera.

    Madama Butterfly was exquisite

by ChristinaJ14 on 11/18/14Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

A very tragic but beautiful produced opera! The set was simple but the way light was used - in the back drop, on the stage - changed the mood, intensified actions, and gave you a sense of the passing of time. The lead who played Madama Butterfly sang beautifully and use many mannerisms that drew you into the story.

I have seen Butterfly at least ten times, including at the Met. This production surpassed them all.

    Madama Butterfly was phenom!

by CRPEDM17 on 11/12/14Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

My first opportunity to see a staged opera and it was riveting, Couldn't have chosen a better intro! Full of love, pain & longing, tragedy, and in a twisted way- triumph. The story was well told and the performers were fantastic! I was moved to tears. Thank you for a wonderful performance!

    Madama Butterfly

by Namasteskipper on 11/12/14Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

Asako Tamura was superb as Cio-Cio-San, such vocal projection from a petite lady: Chad Shelton's (an excellent tenor) voice seemed subdued in comparison. We are still researching the origins of the surprise ending.

    A classic performed beautifully!

We had balcony seats but the acoustics of the theater are fantastic, it was like having orchestra seats. The performers' voices were powerful, and the tickets very affordable.

    Well Done Opera

by dh373 on 11/10/14Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra did a fine job with Puccini's music. All of the singers were of high caliber. Only one I had trouble hearing was the marriage broker. The set design was minimal, but was creatively added to for each act. The opera ended with Cho Cho San's nurse stabbing B.F. Pinkerton in the back, which was not in the original libretto.

    Madam Butterfly

by F4flyer on 11/10/14Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

Having the BSO as part of the performance lends just one more reason why the show was excellent. The main character voices were crisp and strong and I could not have picked a better opportunity to take my bride to her first opera.

    Soar with Madama Butterfly

by Leo808 on 11/10/14Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

Classic performance of Puccini's masterpiece. Asako Tamura as Cio-Cio-San was beautiful and emotions were portrayed as to move you to tears. Also loved the performance of Timothy Mix. The storyline changes slightly but in a good way. Brought my teen and she enjoyed it as well.

    Madame butterfly

by Treeflowerperson on 11/10/14Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric - Baltimore

Pucinni was great. Baltimore production was awful. They changed the final act. A priest, crucifix and a figure lurking right side of stage added nothing. Cannot figure out why these were inserted into a great opera. They detracted and added nothing to the minimal setting. The humming chorus was well lit and sounded beautiful. Even Baltimore could not ruin it.

Great show, beautiful voices, but the theater acoustic is pretty bad unless, I guess, you're in the first 15 or 20 rows.

This performance of Madame Butterfly was out of this world! The staging was beautiful and organic. The performance by the lead soprano was flawless. She brought heart and soul to the character. This timeless story of exploitation and discrimination needs to be heard. This performance was moving. When she sang one Lovely Day, I think my soul temporarily left my body!

    Madam Butterfly

by TJJ41 on 5/13/14DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

From the overture to the final curtain - beautiful. The principles were fabulous, singing with such intensity and beautiful tenderness. Set design was simple and yet elegant. Only one time did one screen not get positioned just correctly and the spotlight shown into the audience. I loved the silhouette effect - stunning. Overall a wonderful evening of music. Oh and yes, I used 2 tissues.

Inna Los superb as Cio-Cio San

by StonyCindy on 5/12/14DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Inna Los personified the "Butterfly" with her superb voice and physical appearance, right down to the shy yet coy looks she gave to Pinkerton. Her performance was totally believable, making one forget to glance at the English sub-titles when she anguished over her fate. Besides Los, the cast stand outs were Cynthia Hanna as Suzuki and Weston Hurt as Sharpless. Joseph Wolverton's villainous Pinkerton elicited boos from the audience which he seemed to relish! Puccini's music soared with the Grand Rapids Orchestra. There are no bad seats at DeVos Hall and our seats center were excellent. Compared to other markets like Lyric Opera in Chicago, Opera Grand Rapids shines and is a bargain. Our son showed up unexpectedly and we were still able to procure a ticket last minute for him. This show should have been sold out, it was that good. I am looking forward to returning in the fall for Carmen.

    GRO does it again!

by FourPianos on 5/12/14DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

I have seen operas in many major cities and the Grand Rapids Opera still if one of my favorites and that was confirmed last night. Soprano Inna Los, gave a heart wrenching performance as Cio-Cio San. Truly one of the best singers I have ever heard playing this role. The only downfall was that she was so outstanding she made others look weak.

    Opera

by Starbrakeman on 4/14/14Tilles Center Concert Hall - Greenvale

Convenient, clean & modern concert hall, easy parking, great center view seat, tragic love story themed opera, ageless good story-line, great orchestra, great Telepront, great costumes, clever stage set using moveable rice paper screening. The lead singer who played Madame Butterfly was amazing and a very strong singer. The only thing I would change is that the other singers were not as strong or as loud as the lead. May have preffered a more evenly balanced cast but other than that it was a very enjoyable show. Highly recommended.
