This was my first opera experience in Phoenix and I wasn't disappointed. The cast was fantastic though the sets and costumes were lacking. I will attend another Arizona Opera performance in the future.

My first opera
by Anonymous on 1/30/12Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5This was the first live opera performance I have seen. While I have nothing against which to compare, I was blown away by this performance. The staging was simple and beautiful, and the music and singing were the equal of any recording I have heard. I am eager to see more performances by Arizona Opera!
Arizona Opera: Madama Butterfly
by Mesawinter on 1/30/12Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5Saw the Sat. Jan 28 evening performance in Phoenix; Singing was first rate--all characters; all ranges; although it was more than passable, i thought the scenery weak and the lighting not really enhancing the performance; I would recommend the performance; it was a good Butterfly. I was disappointed that the House let latecomers in during Act I; that is distracting esp. when the latecomers are talking and not sure where they are going; obviously this is an acceptable policy to the house; I don;t find it acceptable.

Madame Butterfly
by DMGW on 1/30/12Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5The music and the singing were beautiful, moved me to tears. However, I would have liked the set to better reflect the Japanese environment.
Magnificent music, beautifully performed
by Flordeldesierto on 1/30/12Symphony Hall - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5The sets were somewhat disappointing in that they were stark and unimagintive but they did not detract from the opera or the performance of the cast.

Question!
by 4911 on 10/23/11Phoenix Opera House - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5I have seen Madam Butterfly and it was wonderful. I saw this opera about 4-5 years ago in Phoenix, Arizona when mezzo-soprano Isola Jones played Suzuki, her maid. Where is Isola Jones? Why isn't she singing in Phoenix and other venues in the USA. Her signature role is Carmen, but where is she? We are missing one of the best mezzo-sopranos of all times. Why aren't we hearing Ms. Isola Jones singing?
Butterflys are very rare
by Operany on 9/25/11Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5I am glad that I ordered the tickets at 5:00 in the morning on Thursday. We did not have many butterflys at the farm, so what is better than to listen to the music, see a nice stage and enjoy Puccini. The stage was nice and the idea to keep it the same in all three acts was great. The costumes were acceptable and the singers did perform very well. I have seen Madame Butterfly multiple times all over the world in very modern as well as very traditional performances.I liked the one a have seen here in Indianapolis, what is braking my heart a bit is the fact that it was not sold out. It was a great evening. Thank you
Lim, Mattsey & Hu create magic
by GirlOfTheGoldenWest on 9/25/11Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 4 out of 5Jee Hyun Lim was born to perform this role. She's done her homework and it shows. Such freshness combined with innocence and fierceness and a translucent voice. Absolutely captivating. Jeffery Mattsey brings a subtleness to Sharpless that I have never seen. You could read his angst without any over-acting and his baritone is rich and flawless. Joseph Hu is charming and funny as Goro. A clear, articulate tenor voice combined with impeccable timing to creat a wonderful character.
Madama Butterfly was better than I hoped
by SandyW55 on 6/17/11Avalon Theatre - EastonRating: 5 out of 5I grew up with Puccini's music including some from Madama Butterfly. I have never seen the opera. I never considered myself a lover of the art form. I took my Mother to this production for her birthday. I truly enjoyed it as much as she did. The behind the scene interview made it very special
