LETTUCE is (a) the prime ingredient in a salad, (b) a slang for cash, (c) a green herb that can be smoked, (d) a genre-busting six-member musical collective formed in 1992 by four alumni of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, or (e) all of the above. If you answered "e," then you're in on the sheer magic of a band that both feeds the rich history of funk and combines it with strains of hip-hop, rock, psychedelia, jazz, soul, jam, go-go, and the avant-garde.
The GRAMMY Award-nominated six-piece is comprised of Adam Deitch [drums, percussion, arrangement], Adam "Shmeeans" Smirnoff [guitar], Erick "Jesus" Coomes [bass], Ryan Zoidis [alto, baritone, tenor sax, Korg X-911], Eric "Benny" Bloom [trumpet, horns], and Nigel Hall [vocals, Hammond B-3, Rhodes, clavinet, keyboards]. To date, their discography includes Outta Here [2002], Rage! [2008], Fly [2012], Crush [2015], the EP Mt. Crushmore [2016], the live album Witches Stew [2017], Elevate [2019], Resonate [2020], Unify [2022], and now VIBE - a single 48 minute continuous session of pure, free-flowing improvisation, available digitally for the first time.
With VIBE, Lettuce cement their status as boundary-pushing innovators three decades into their lauded career, blurring lines and smashing up jazz chords, psychedelic passages, big horns, strains of soul and go-go, hip-hop elements for an uplifting, improvisational sound all their own. Ryan Zoidis explains, "we got into a vibe and hit record. 48 minutes went by like a blink of an eye. This is our first purely improvised recording. Nothing planned, nothing edited or overdubbed. This is a true spontaneous musical expression captured in its entirety."
All together now... Lett us VIBE.
Lettuce was a great great concert. Thank you. If they come to your area do not miss them. FUNK JAZZ!!!
Great sounds, great lights, great energy great! Looking forward to visiting the Astro stadium again đđž.
The show was amazing from the warm up to the end. Great sound and the band was in fine shape. Glad we went.
We drove down to Port Chester/Capital Theatre from Kingston, NY. The show and light show was OUTSTANDING in all aspects. The drummer and the horns were my favorite. Iâd see them again anywhere in the tristate area, thanks again!!
ALWAYS a great time seeing bands at the State Theater! Lettuce delivered as one of the best yet!
The acoustics were great at several points of the theater leading me to believe there are no bad seats. Proximity to the stage provided an intimate experience with the band in a very classy surrounding. Canât wait to go back
Happy 2 years Brooklyn Bowl Philly!!! Lettuce always knows how to bring the funky party !!
Lettuce put on an exciting show with great music and stage presence. If you like funky jazz to dance to this is your band. I look forward to catching them again. Just be ready to be submerged in young white guy "lettuce"culture. Sooooo glad the venue was non smoking.
Lettuce was dope! They never disappoint. The venue was nice too!!
I wish Ticketmaster would inform us when a band does or does not have an opening act. This one did, so I basically wasted an hour and a half of my time! Iâve missed an hour+ of others expecting an opener!
Lettuce is so funky, every member could be the lead in their own band. All of their breaks and changes are right on the spot and the solos will blow your mind. The bassist drives the show and youâll be too busy dancing to bother to sit down. They always bring their A game and never disappoint.
What a show!! My first time seeing lettuce live and they did not disappoint⌠upbeat funky jams. #fanforlife
Observatory in Santa Ana. Great crowd. Everyone was into it. There were children less that 10 years old enjoying the show with their parents. Great mood. Everybody dancing. There is no way not to dance when LETTUCE is in a funky groove. Great time. Even better than I expected.
Lettuce was excellent - danceable funk/jazz and a trippy light show. A very good time!!!
The band is great, the venue is really cool looking. But wish they had more seating available. We are not the types that likes to stand squish between people just to be closer to the band. Acoustics arenât great for upstairs seating, and they charge a premium to do so, which is unfortunate.
This Show was one of the best shows we have seen over the past couple years. Steel Pulse and Lettuce played exceptionally well at this show.
Not exactly my cup of tea, but once I listened âthey did that thangâ! They had my face âscrunchedâ as I rocked to the beat! They also have nice vocals to help soothe some of that energy. Nice job Lettuce. Until I see you again. Keep it shredded!
I went for Steel Pulse. Steel Pulse was incredible!! Great show. Makua Rothman and Lettuce were not on my radar and, in my opinion, not on the same high level. I thought all three bands needed to work on their relationship with the sound guys. The volume level was OK, but the bass was WAY too overpowering.
All the bands were great, my first Lettuce show, and Iâm ready for another!!
I've been to many a concert. This venue sets the record for worst sound I've ever heard. Especially during the Steel Pulse show. I'll see my favorite artists elsewhere. To submit this I had to give it at least one star - I would have given it no stars...
