I've seen les Miz four times (including this production), and this was equal to the first national touring company I saw in 1987. The voices were universally strong. The staging outstanding without being cluttered or distracting. There were new narrative bits added to connect the story and, though it's always odd to have things you're not expecting in a familiar show, they worked really well. Overall, an outstanding experience.

About
Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg's Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as "a reborn dream of a production" (Daily Telegraph).
Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and many more.

Good show overall.....some of the seating does not allow for good views of the performance.
Still sooo good!
by Pamebellezza on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5This was my fourth time seeing Les Misérables. It's been my favorite musical for over ten years. I was curious to see what changes they would have made to the show this time around. The set design was totally revamped and made the whole experience entirely new. Some scenes were jaw-dropping. WOW. Fantine, movingly melancholy (as all good Fantines are). I cried three times during the show! Even if you're not sure whether to go because you've seen it so many times, GO! It's so worth it.
Fab, emotional Les Mis in Chicago
by Anonymous on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5Outstanding matinee production on 05 February, and we have seen many Les Miserables in different cities throughout the past 20+ years. The only weakness, from a voice standpoint, was the voice of the character of Eponine; not great range and emotionalism not that well portrayed, in our opinion. The Tribune had an article about the lack of a barracaid in this production, but we thought it was great. Loved the light being specifically illuminated when main characters died/"passed on"; was a great touch. THANK YOU, Chicago production cast, musicians and all involved!
Incredible Sets but Poor Sound & Choreography
by Hdcvoguy on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5Saw the show this weekend. It was my 2nd time seeing Les Mis, the 1st was ~17 years ago in Cleveland, OH. The best part about this show was the set design. Amazing constructions, quick smooth changes, very elaborte and utilized a high tech scrim with video projection to add a 3-D effect. Extremely well done. However, I was *very* disappointed with the sound level. I was in the Balcony and the orchestra totally overpowered the singers. I struggled to hear the words whenever the soloists were singing. This was inexcusible for a Broadway show in a 1st class theatre. Whoever was managing the sound for this production did not do his or her job properly and thoroughly. Another disappointment was the choreography, or really the lack of it. For nearly all the solos, the actors just stood still in one place and sang. It was boring! There should have been some purposeful movement. It's a musical, not a concert! Overall, I would not recommend this show. The music and story line are powerful, but I've seen it done much much better. Save your money and see something else.
Incredible experience

Sadly Underwhelmed
by TulipToes on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5Les Mis is my mother's favorite musical. So, for her birthday, I decided it would be a great gift. However, we were both sadly disappointed with the new scene adaptation and half of the principles. The male leads as Javer and Enjolras were both great. And as always, the Thenardiers were hilarious! I also appreciated that the children were allowed to actually sound like children as they sang. Overall, I wouldn't go and see the same cast. And I may wait awhile to go see it again. Additionally, there seemed to be problems with the lighting...created more shadows than I'd expect, which made viewing difficult at times.
Les Miserables

Les Mis
by Butterfly78 on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5Most of the principal characters were miscast. This is a play for belters- if you can not belt you should not be cast in this show. Especially Jean Valjean, Fontine and Eponine. Terrible! If you are going to this show expecting the original show- you'll be disappointed as they have changed a LOT of things from the original. If this is your first time seeing it you'll probably enjoy it- but as a 6x attendee of Les Mis, I was very disappointed.
FANTASTIC!
by Sherribear on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5I have seen Les Mis eight times. This production is amazing! The cast was wonderful! When the chorus sang it sounded like 50 people on stage. The voices of all the cast was right on target. I highly, highly recommend Les Mis.
Les Miserables - an outstanding performance
by AMS24601 on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5Great tenors. Good staging and the orchestra did not overwhelm the singers. A great performance.
Les Mis Still Awesome!
by Shopnforgirls on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5Thought this was a great production. Loved the sets. Valjean and Javert were both impressive! Not my favorite Fantine or Eponine, but still a great show. Have seen this show 5 times previously!
Les Miserables
by PleasedinNorthbrook on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5Excellent show and cast. Hard to believe we were watching the understudy in the lead role. Wonderful performance.
Les Miserables was unbelievable!
by ziller on 2/7/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5Do not miss this show! I was in awe the entire production. Les Miserables has always been my favorite musical, so I was a little hesitant to go. I had seen it 10 years ago in New York and was afraid it wouldn't live up to it. Wow, was I wrong! I enjoyed it more than I did then! Well done!

If this were the first time I had seen this play, I would have no idea what was happening. This is my favorite of all plays and I have seen it over 7 times - from London to Rockford, IL. The stage seemed small to present this play. Cosette was weak while I thought the rest of the cast was wonderful. If you have read the book and then go see this version. You will not be disappointed.
As Good As Ever!
by Pliffie on 2/6/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5I saw this 25 years ago and cried. This time I sang along and cried again. Delightful.
Worth every penny

Les Miserables
by LewisA on 2/6/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5This production of Les Miserables was very well done. The performers were very talented and did an outstanding job. The leads did a phenomenal job - Valjean, Marius, Cosette, Fontine, etc. My wife and I have this musical before (4x for me, 2 in London, and 3x for her), and we could not help but notice that there are always some directing differences - we thought it odd, for example, that the laborers in the opening scene were oarsmen on a ship and not working in a rock quarry or similar site. Also, the stage was very small and seemed "crowded" at times. In addition, there was no "rotating stage" which seems to be a standard prop for Les Mis. Overall, it was a great show, and it was worth driving the 200+ miles to Chicago to see it.
