About

Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg's Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as "a reborn dream of a production" (Daily Telegraph).

Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and many more.

I've seen Le Mis several times but really enjoyed this production best. I found it refreshing and real to have John Val Jean and Fontine acted by people of color. It offered opportunities to explore possibilities, given the time and the innkeepers white skin and their daughters darker skin. The sets, lighting, etc. were exciting and new. A subtle shift I felt in the tone of the rebellion to a more insistent stance almost felt like watching the streets of Cairo last week. I brought my 10 y.o. sports-crazy son and he had a great time and was able to sit thru the entire show with only asking once how much longer (near the very end). That alone speaks volumes for the production. We were able to discuss the lessons and levity of the show afterwards and we both learned something.

We've seen Les Miz several times in various venues. This was a lovely performance, but certainly not the best we've seen. The character of Javre was superior. Jean Val Jean was a wonderful actor and singer, but I didn't care for the style he brought to the performance. It seemed more contemporized somehow, though I haven't been able to put my finger on it exactly. I guess I prefer the standard tenors I've seen in other performances.

  • Don't miss Les Mis!

by FreddySK on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The show was beautiful. Although the storyline is depressing, the music keeps things lively. The music is the main reason that I love this show so much. I thought that the male voices carried the show. I was a little disappointed in adult Cosette's voice. However, Fantine's voice I could listen to all day.

  • I've seen better Les Mis performances.

by SuburbaniteGuy on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I love Les Mis. Have seen it four times now including once in London. This particular show had some changes I didn't care for. First, there was zero chance of the girl they chose as Eponine to be mistaken as a boy so that was a major problem. Second, it seemed they tried to add some "soul" in a couple of Val Jean and Eponine's songs rather than sticking with the written melody. The show was good. In fact, while watching it I tried not to compare it to the other performances to decide if it was good, even though it wasn't nearly as good as other performances we have seen. So, while I would recommend seeing this, it didn't measure up to other Les Mis performances I've seen.

  • Les Miserables- Chicago

by Jpen on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a surprise event for my 13 yr old niece. She had read the whole book by Victor Hugo, over the summer and her dream was to see the musical. Since it was only playing in London at that time, it was a HUGE surprise to her when she recieved news that she was going to attend the show in Chicago in2011! We had a wonderful time and the production did not dissapoint. We were very pleased with the performances and the location. Chicago is a fun city to keep us busy for the entire weekend as well.

  • Les Mis

    by Trb3B on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I have seen Les Mis MANY times, in various cities, and countries, through the years! It is my ALL-TIME favorite musical, with a great story of grace and redemption that always moves me. I took my 18 year old granddaughter because I felt she NEEDED to experience the whole production, not know the music from recordings, etc. It still moves me greatly, as it also did for my granddaughter. I MUST say, however, that I like the original production much more than this new one. The placing of some songs -i.e. "Bring Him Home" seemed too soon. Valjean had not had a chance to really TRY to save Marius - he hadn't struggled with him in the sewer and didn't know how hurt Marius was. Jabert's suicide was confusing & unclear to people around me who did not know the story - I had to explain what happened, later. Mostly excellent cast (Eponine= a bit week and unconvincing). BUT, Les Mis ALWAYS moves me through both the story/play and the music. Even though I prefer the original production, I highly recommend this to anyone, and I do! I am trying to assemble a church group to come down to see Les Mis. I have done this in the past, with a pre-performance talk about the story, etc. I hope I succeed.

  • Fantastic show

by jonkdds on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This is my favorite musical and this most recent trip to see the show did not disappoint. The cast as a whole was very tight (with the one exception of Eponine - who was not very believable and had a couple of off key moments). The updated set was well done. Well worth the money and a fantastic date night with the wife!

  • Les Miz: Unforgettable

    by Lim215 on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen this production more than a dozen times over the years, the new 25th anniversary production was a bit of a surprise. However, the voices, music and story are still unforgettable and remain with you long after the final curtain. This is a classic play that everyone should see.

  • Must See!!

by CaseyR on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

From beginning to end, from the opening montage to the final bows, this performance was absolutely amazing. Very well presented, and the casting was superb! If there was one musical you see this year, make it Les Miserables at the Cadillac Palace. Two thumbs way, WAY up!

  • New stage setting for Les Miz

    by KJD1035 on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

We were very impressed with the stage setting and non-traditional casting of main characters. The use of video screens really enhanced the feeling of movement on the stage that was once a rotating stage.

  • Les Miz not as big as the hype

    by Penguin2 on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I had never seen Les Miz before and was somewhat disappointed. I could not understand half the words and found it difficult to follow the story line. Once I finally figured out what was supposed to happening, about half way through the production, it was OK. I don't fault the actors, it's the story.

  • by Veech on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The cast was fantastic and the set was amazing, this is the second time we have seen it in 5 years and it has gotten better, although hard to imagine!

  • Such a great Performance

    by theGeek57 on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I can't say enough about this show - the performers did a spectacular job. The minor recommendations I have were outweighed by the strength of the production. Great casting choices and the scenery was breathtaking.

  • Singing was great

by crownline on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Singing and theater was top notch. The Lead girl did miss a high note at the end of one song. Very effective acting. Made me tear up a little.

  • An Amazing Performance

by Isarian on 2/15/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My high school put on a performance of Les Miserables and I always regretted not seeing it in theaters when it first came around the Chicago area. I waited 6 years to see this live and the wait was worth it. If you have the chance, see it!

This musical is my favorite musical ever. This was my 3rd time seeing it and it's always as if it was the first time. The musical is very emotional and very touching. It gets me every time. I strongly recommend everyone to catch this 25th Anniversary tour when it's still available. You won't regret it.
