About

Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg's Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as "a reborn dream of a production" (Daily Telegraph).

Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and many more.

  • LeMiz, better than ever

by VJSM on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This is the 4th time we have seen this and the sets and staging were incredible. The only drawback to the show we saw was that actresses who played Fantine and Eponine, we felt, were a little weak. But, the story is as great as ever and the staging and set were the best ever!

  • A must see

This was one of the most amazing shows I have seen!

  • Les Mis was incredible !

Worth every dime--almost three hours of magnificent orchestration and singing. Production was excellent.

  • Casting issues

by Paulsen on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Les Miserables is a classic on many levels. The quaility of the voices in this production, the staging, the orchestra, the passion of the acting - all were at the level I would expect of a 25th anniversery production. However, I was disappointed in the casting of African-Americans in roles that do not fit the historical setting or, in one case, the racial make-up of the family from which the character originated. Jean Valjean would not be an African American in 1830's France and Epinone did not have African American parents. I re-call noting a racially mixed Bob Crachet family in The Goodmans's production of a Christmas Carol a few years ago. Can one imagine a white Porgy or a white Bess? Absolutely not. And the reverse does not work here either.

  • Les Miserables reinvented

    by Dante13 on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

A great reinvention of the classical tale. Some singing does not stand up to the standards set by previous artists - not because of lesser abilities but due in part to the slight variations from the original. It is always pleasureable to see a new take on a story but Les Mis is so ingrained with it's classical songs and voices it is sometimes difficult to meet the high standards set forth.

  • High School Quality

    by dee2016 on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Les Mis has been a favorite of mine since the beginning. I saw the 2005 production and it was amazing. This production however was not even close to the quality that one expects from a "broadway" production. We did not get to see the lead Valjean actor - who knows, he may have been better. The actor we did see was very good, but I felt that part needs an older actor. He did spent almost 20 years in prison - remember!! But we still liked him. Fantine was absolutely horrible. She didn't have the maturity of voice or skill to pull off the part. She looked like she was 16. The actor that played Javert was fantastic! He had the voice quality that held command. He was the best one of them all. The suicide scene was very well done! However, overall the production had a "high school" feel to it. Where is the passion and emotion that comes with the Les Mis score?? I hardly felt it at all! And will someone please teach those girls how to die without all the extra drama. WAY OVERDONE! I want to hear the song - not someone breathing through their teeth and hicupping between the words.

  • Les Mis

    by Mariner1 on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Saw a matinee show with Joe Tokarz as Jean Valjean giving a superb performance. What a voice! The rest of the cast and the staging were simply outstanding. Have seen Les Mis three times and this was the best.

  • Les Mis was miz!

by jecami on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I forgot how long and drawn out Les Mis is. The ensemble performances were good, but some of the solo numbers lacked intensity and feeling. The woman who played Fantine could only sing "I Dreamed A Dream" in her dreams as she seemed to have difficulty with the high notes. One song - probably the most notable song from the show - and it was such a disappointment to heard it sung so weakly.

  • Different But Good

by iamwhoiam on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

My husband and I have seen Les Mis now 3 times, this was the first time we had seen a different set and a diverse cast - it felt like I had seen a completely different play. It was really good and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • The Best Cast Ever

    by Northbrook1 on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen this play three times and this was the best. The singers were better than the ones on the CD. The guy who played Javert was born for the role.

  • It was OK

by Janeve on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I was warned there was a risque part in the musical, but wasn't quite prepared for the two or three risque parts. The acting left nothing to the imagination and I felt was not necessary since the words to the number basically said it all. Yes, I'm conservative, and can usually handle a little risque. Overall, it was good. Great voices. Great acting! Just not Phantom or Wicked in my book. Sorry!

  • Les Miserables less than expected

by Partyofone on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

This was my third time to see Les Miserables. I was looking forward to seeing a new production of this classic musical. I was underwhelmed by the experience. The opening scene was wonderful. after that we had a difficult time understanding the performers. The orchestra was often playing over the performers, which only made it that much more frustrating to understand the players. There were moments when the music was subdued and the cast could be understood and then it was wonderful. Unfortunately, those moments never lasted for any measurable length of time. The other problem was with the set design. The use of an imposed scene was not fully seen. From our vantage point all of the stage could not be seen, and this made the suicide scene mediocre. Maybe the problem was our seating location, but during the intermission, these same concerns were being voiced by several patrons.

  • Uplifting

by eabby on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I saw Les Mis 18 years ago when it was touring. It was magical, enthralling, and tragic then, and it remains so today. Excellent performances by all. A wonderful venue (the Cadillac Palace has incredible ambiance). Fantastic staging, including the projection effects. The only negative is that the audio levels (voice vs. music mixing) were a bit off some times, with the music drowning out the vocals. A bit more attention to detail there and it would have been a perfect performance.

  • Les Miz......Less than amazing

    by allioops814 on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

This was our 7th time seeing Les Miz.. We were so looking forward to seeing it after seeing the 25th Anniversary Concert in October 2010 and then again Feb.12th. We should have stopped while ahead. We all come from a musical background and know the musical backwards and forwards. Quite disappointed in Jean Valjean. With soooo many talented singers out there, couldn't they have cast someone better. He was very weak compared to all the others we have seen. With such a dark set he also blended into it and was hard to see. Javert was great as well as the chorus. Always loved the turntable in the past, but didn't miss it at all due to the new outstanding sets and staging. My daughter saw it as well with us and was going to bring her husband to see it for his first time, but after seeing it decided it was not worth going again. Cannot recommend this performance, unless you are going for the very first time and do not know what to expect. It just didn't meet our high expectations and was all due to the lead.Sorry.

  • Les Miserables

by Bartorama on 2/17/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This is my 3rd time including once in London, and this cast was simply amazing. My wife and I both love this story, have listened to it countless times at home, but still get emotional watching and listening. The voices were amazing! It is 2 days later and we are still "abuzz" with excitement over the evening.

It was a great show and the performers were all very good. The singing was very dynamic and powerful throughout the show.

  • Changes Make for a Bland Production

    by Disappointingtome2 on 2/17/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Very dim lighting throughout the entire production was irritating and took away from the entire show. Changes made to the original script were disappointing. Rowing a boat instead of a chain-gang? Really? Final barricade scene was too much smoke, and sadly missing the symbolic red splotches that were part of the original production. Cosette's weak voice was usually drowned out by the orchestra. In fact, much of the singing, even group singing, was drowned out. Sound man needs to do some work! Thenardiers were watered down and not very funny, and Mrs. Thenardier's ball dress was way to nice. The singers' performances seemed rushed, but at the same time the whole show dragged. The changes, along with a lack of lighting, a few weak singers and a noisy orchestra made this Chicago 25th Anniversary Production a disappointment.

Rowing a boat instead of the chain gang? Really? The final barricade scene had too much smoke, sadly missing the symbolic splotches of red staged in the original production. Thenardiers were watered down and not very funny, plus Mrs. Thenardier's wedding ball dress was much too nice. Cosette's weak voice wasn't always well heard, in fact the orchestra was too loud in many parts of the production and drowned out several of the singer's voices, even when there was a group of singers. Sound man needs to do some work! All the changes, with a few weak voices blasted by the orchestra made this Chicago 25th Anniversary Les Miserables pretty bland.

Have seen this musical on Braodway and on tour at least 10 times, and this was the worst rendition yet. Scenery minimalist compared to other productions, and several scenes shortened. Overall, sorry I spent the time and money to attend.
