Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jean Valjean a Stand-out
by BeanisBeanBeanicio on 2/19/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5Lawrence Clayton stands head-and-shoulders above the rest of the cast in this spectacularly executed production. The use of projected images on a screen in back, mixed with mobile set-pieces convincingly recreates Revolutionary France. The cast sometimes struggles to compete with a full orchestration (a new addition), but Clayton - as Jean Valjean - takes the yoke of the play on his shoulders and stands tall bearing it. Terrific work from him, though it cause him to be missed when he's not center-stage.
Do Not Deny Yourself!
by TheatreGroupie on 2/19/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5Lovely, moving and human. The music is unparalleled. Jean Valjean is one of the greatest characters in literature. Although the musical was three hours long, it definitely went by quickly. It held my 14 year old and 10 year old's interest. The audience was also very involved and enthusiatic. Highly recommend.

The play had great energy! It felt like a small stage though, and it was a bit expensive. Parking across the street was outrageously expensive at $32. The Ford Center has parking that is much more reasonable nearby at $17, though still expensive for parking for a couple hours. Also, driving down to the city was awful traffic, and we barely made the start time, even after leaving more than enough time. Time driving around the city just to get parking too far too long. Please advise how much time to leave for parking and driving after leaving the highway. Its a lot more than you would think. Im used to driving to the Ford Center. This was much more complicated.
Music was unbelievable!!
by MusicalDi on 2/19/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5The vocals of this cast are absolutely amazing. Sounds like twice the number of people singing.

this was the fifth production I've seen and it would rank #4 of 5. The play itself is wonderful but this cast and rendering did not do the music and drama justice.
great show !!

A wonderful portrayal of the classic musical. The re-imagining of the sets and new orchestrations give fresh life to a great new production.
Excellent new production
by operadiva7 on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5As decades long fans of this show, my family and I were prepared for the much acclaimed newly staged production and were not disappointed. Overall, the singing/acting was superb and worthy of the material. We were a bit surprised by the use of prerecorded musicians along with some fine instrumentalists in the pit. We understand the reasons for this change and admit it kept the tempo of the performance in good perspective. The handling of Victor Hugo's wonderful illustrations more than enhanced the action, widening our view of the "outside world of the events". If you do not thrill to the opening chords of the overture, this may not be your kind of show. If you do, the music and the amazing story can only transport you on a glorious journey of the mind and heart.
Astounding!!

Good Intimate Revival of Les Mis
by flipme on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5I saw the original show many years ago and loved it. This show was quite a change, much more intimate, but non the less enjoyable. The updates, orchestra, staging, props, and lighting helped make the show seem fuller. Jenny "Cosette" and Betsy " Fantine" were the weakest voices and ocassionally rushed and Fantine and Eponine deaths overacted. However, I still loved it and was very moved by the show and would love to go back with my children. Still gave a standing 'O' - the whole cast worked well together. The ensemble was wonderful. Joe "Jean Valjean", Andrew "Javert", Justin "Marius", and Jeremy "Enjorlas" were my favorites. To the cast, It is easy for us to make a review without having to go through all the work you go through for each and every show - It is appreciated by at least this viewer.
Great.. Loved it!!
by MyMrE on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5This was my 4th or 5th time seeing Les Miserables. I think it may have been my favorite production of this beautiful musical. I loved the screen with different scenes and I thought that the ensemble productions were the strongest I have seen. My only complaint and complaint is really too strong a word, but I didn't think that the woman who played Fantine was very convincing. She was not as strong vocally as I like Fantine to be. In the past when Fantine sings I Dreamed A Dream, it always leaves me bawling. This time something was missing.. I just didn't feel her pain. But never the less, this was an amazing show and I would recommend it to anyone.

Excellent production. Words of some of ensemble pieces were difficult to understand at times. Excellent set design, acting and singing.

Why will the Cadillac Palace allow people to come in ten minutes after the play has started? Are these people too good to show up on time?

Even at the matinee.. was amazing. Great performance!
Les Mis
by Xelar on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5If you have ever seen the original don't bother seeing this version. If you have never been to a musical before then you might enjoy the showtunes quaility they try to bring to a classic musical.
Les Miserables was spectacular!
by Anonymous on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5My husband and I saw Les Miserables in Chicago and we were amazed. The voices were spectacular and I have been singing the songs in my head for the past few days. I would go back and see it again and again.
Les Mis is still has it!
by APEnglishLitTeacher on 2/18/11Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5I took my 5 AP English lit students to see Les Mis and it was fantastic! We read the book -- all 1463 pages -- and all of them were blown away by this production. They have rated it as their best field trip ever! With my family I saw the originally cast Valjean and with my students I saw the understudy. No worries! They both are great; in fact, I think I preferred the understudy! His tone and control in his falsetto was absolutely amazing -- as one of my students said, "I just got shivers when he sang, 'Bring Him Home' " Truly an outstanding performance. I first saw Les MIs in London in 1987 and this new production is wonderful. It answers some of the questions left by the edits from the original production. I was just disappointed some of my favorite bits and pieces were cut...still, highly recommend!
