Les Miserables: Chicago 2012: Better than ever!
by SamTheKid on 11/27/12Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5I had the good fortune to attend Les Miserables on the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving. It was outstanding!
While it is not fair to compare the performer who played Valjean to Colm or Alfie, he was not disappointing. The Javert performer rivaled Phil Quast and was excellent. Beyond that, I believe each main character was as good as any I've heard before. The Marius character, usually merely adequate, was superb. Thenardier was fresh and new without overdoing it. Sam Barks is the ultimate Eponine, but this performer was right there, too!
Thoroughly enjoyable to listen to, however, I screwed myself regarding the seating. I was taking my 19-year-old girl for the first time in 5 years, and my 14-year-old son for the first time. All that were available on the main floor were "obstructed view" seats. I called to ask if I could go to the theatre to see how obstructed the view would be (8th row, far right). The salesman wouldn't allow it, but he explained that I'd be able to see everything from there, except the far right of the stage: there were no true obstructions. He lied. A boom light was directly in our sight path, and we could see none of the back of the stage, which I'm sure had a scene of the runaway cart, and all the "City and Year" curtains. Also, half of the characters were not visible in "One Day more". Bummer! But, for $67 instead of $199 per seat, I didn't complain. (My son did!)
Orchestra (literally) didn't miss a beat: wonderful!! Gavroche was hard to understand, but charming. The adult Cossette hit the notes effortlessly. Also, it was the best choreographed fight between Valjean and Javert after "The Confrontation" when Fantine dies. I also liked how the scuffle between Fantine and the "gentleman" who had her arrested was done. Great pace, acoustics perfect, seats comfy.
Wish it were playing longer - I'd go again in a minute.
