  • South African Sounds Are Good For The Soul!

by GoValGal on 2/14/15Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I was soooo excited coming in to this show because I have wanted to see Ladysmith perform in person for over two decades! The overall energy of this group is electric and they started with one of Joseph Shabalala's sons in front and continued through the show with other members, some also Joseph's sons, coming up front to take the lead. They performed many songs, old and new, with enthusiasm and love for South African music and each other. They really are a very unique group! When watching videos, they all tend to blend in performance, but in person each individual stands out with their own personality and purpose. All along I kept thinking Joseph was going to make a grand entrance during the next song, but by intermission I was not nearly as optimistic. It wasn't until halfway through the 2nd half that they announced that Joseph was not able to be there due to his health. I was crushed because I've never seen him in person and I was really looking forward to it. I was also very sad that he is not able to be out with these men doing what he loves. Prayers to Joseph! I hope he is back out entertaining fans soon! If he had seen this performance, I know he would have been so very proud! They give their all to make people smile. I sure hope they will come back again next year so we can once again enjoy all of their smiling faces and massive amounts of expressive moves!

by Jeppeboy on 3/26/14Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

It was quite refreshing to experience a taste of my hometown of South Africa. Once again Ladysmith Black Mambazo brought in a uniquely African sound to the USA. Good music and great fun.

High energy, and big fun, LBM put on a great performance. They sang amazing a-capella, coupled with fun antics. Will see them again!

  • These guys gave their ALL

    by JaxMusic2014 on 3/25/14Florida Theatre Jacksonville - JacksonvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I expected a wonderful joyous event and indeed it was ! These 10 men have amAzing voices and were great entertainers. They injected humor, dance steps and fantastic harmony. Their triumph over oppressive politics in S. Africa is so heartwarming. I went by myself since no friends were available to go but I didn't need any company. LBM was quite enough !!

I thought the show was great. They are an energetic group, and you just feel good listening to them and watching them. The intermission was way too long though--20 minutes. I was just getting into the groove and felt like the long intermission sort of derailed some of my enthusiasm. That said--the artistry and genuine love for their music is apparent and that is worth going to see them again.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is such a great group! Very laid-back with an awesome sense of humor!! Their voices blend like no other and they truly are blessed with an amazing gift!! I had never heard of Johnny Clegg and was very interested to hear his music. I was pleasantly surprised! His style is a combination of so many that it is a sound that I had never heard of before! I loved it and loved that he took the time to tell stories about his music! I would go to see both groups again!!

I saw this group back in the 1980's and wondered if they were still as lively and energetic. Answer: more so! They are uplifting and the harmonies are so soothing and they were clearly enjoying themselves.

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo was amazing

by Obuyanzi on 2/28/14B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, what an amazing show. even with the father & leader missing from the 2014 tour, Prof. B.J. Shabalala has really mentored & groomed Thamsanqa to carry on in his absence. 3 generations of Shabalalas will keep LBM legacy going into the future. I'll keep attending shows

  • So, so wonderful!

We had wanted to see Ladysmith Black Mambazo years ago, but I was due with my second child so could not make it. We were glad to make it this time even with the looming snow storm! They are wonderful performers, singers, dancers, people! We are so happy they made the trip to our city! Thank you for an excellent evening!
